Vena Cava Debuts Trailer for First Film

When Vena Cava's Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai inked a brand expansion deal with Li & Fung in April, they said one of their goals for the future was to create a movie.

When Vena Cava's Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai inked a brand expansion deal with Li & Fung in April, they said one of their goals for the future was to create a movie. Six months later, they've financed a horror film called Heartland that they appear in with a group of their girlfriends.

The movie, directed by Josh and Benny Safdie of Red Bucket Films, paints the story of a women's cult led by a man named Willie Gillis that becomes a popular artists collective. In the trailer, Gillis is overheard telling his followers, "If a wild animal is trying to do you and yours harm, it is OK to kill that wild animal. And sometimes, a wild animal is a human being."

Details about the movie's plot are scant, but the trailer shows the cult traveling to Los Angeles's Chateau Marmont and singing songs in a car. It also shows the cult's women wearing pieces from Vena Cava's Fall 2012 collection, which itself was inspired by the neo-noir movies of the '70s.

A look at the film Buhai and Mayock created in the video below.

Vena Cava Spring 2013

Childhood trips to Tijuana inspired Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock's Spring 2013 collection for Vena Cava.
Vena Cava Spring 2013 | Runway

Childhood trips to Tijuana inspired Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock's Spring 2013 collection for Vena Cava. The offering was infused with the feeling of Summers spent south of the border: plenty of colorful stripes abounded on everything from jackets to skirts, while a triangle cutout detail decorated the necklines of a number of garments.

There were office-appropriate clothes (a pair of plain yet well-tailored black trousers comes to mind) as well as flirty cocktail frocks in vibrant colors and skirts in interesting prints. A feeling of inclusiveness made it an even richer offering. "The clothes are not just meant to look good on an 18-year-old model," Mayock said. "They are for real women to wear every day."

This Week's Best Dressed

The cool kids kept it coastal this week — and the styles were just as eclectic as the locales.
Best-Dressed Models and Celebrities Week of August 13, 2012

The cool kids kept it coastal this week — and the styles were just as eclectic as the locales. In New York, Prabal Gurung and company celebrated the arrival of the designer's ICB collection at Barneys with tacos, popsicles, and a lively set by indie-dance duo Tanlines. Hanne Gaby Odiele, Elettra Wiedemann, Dani Stahl, Leandra Medine, and Mia Moretti — who also pulled double duty as DJ — were among those in attendance; some even sported looks from the just-in collection. "Tonight is all about celebration, love, support," Gurung told the crowd before the band took the stage at the retailer's darkened Chelsea Co-Op store.

Over in Los Angeles, there was another young label celebrating the launch of its collection at Barneys as well: Vena Cava. Hosted by Gen Art, the party featured a gaggle of Cava gals — including Tennessee Thomas, Malin Akerman, Jenny Lewis, and Busy Philipps — sporting the brand's Fall 2012 looks while St. Vincent performed to a packed-in house at Chateau Marmont.

A peek at all that — plus all of the gorgeous ensembles worn by Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale on their Euro tour for Total Recall — here, in our weekly best-of recap.

Malin Akerman was among the stylish stars that feted Vena Cava's new Fall collection at Chateau Marmont hosted by GenArt last night.

Malin Akerman was among the stylish stars that feted Vena Cava's new Fall collection at Chateau Marmont hosted by GenArt last night. For the occasion (far left), she wore the label's paisley-print silk pants with a black American Apparel crop top, Vince Camuto clutch ($168), and these VC Signature wedges ($225). About her bottoms, the actress told us: "Look at these pants, they're kind of amazing." When asked to describe her personal style, Malin said, "It's definitely a little bit more laid-back, rock 'n' roll, something with a little bit of an edge usually."

With Summer in our midst, we wondered what Malin's favorite warm-weather pieces are. "A sarong is always great. I just had an amazing vacation in Italy so that was a super essential," she spilled. "You can wrap it into a dress. There's so many different ways to do it. And then of course, a pair of jean shorts. Always need those." As for what you can expect to see Malin rocking this Fall? "I'm a big leather person, so I'm always on the lookout for new leather jackets that might be in style. I get excited to see what's coming up, but I have no idea what's on the horizon, so it's always a nice surprise." Shop some of Malin's favorite pieces below to nail her sexy-slash-rocker aesthetic!
