Vera Wang Spring 2013

After last season's abstract exploration in opposites, it's nice to see Vera Wang delve into something softer for Spring 2013.
Vera Wang Spring 2013 | Runway

After last season's abstract exploration in opposites, it's nice to see Vera Wang delve into something softer for Spring 2013. The designer looked to the "romantic beauty and sensuality of India," and thus the pieces on offer here were tinged with a far-flung sense of Eastern exoticism. But don't go thinking that means saris and sarongs. Nope, that's far too literal an interpretation for a designer as elegant as Wang. Instead, these were clothes that, with their feminine plays on proportions, rich jewel tones, and dazzling textural embellishment, were steeped in modern wearability. And they were all the more captivating for it.

Vera Wang Spring 2013

Vera Wang was on top of her game for Spring '13, showing a truly magical, India-inspired collection filled with beautiful colors and refreshing silhouettes.

Vera Wang was on top of her game for Spring '13, showing a truly magical, India-inspired collection filled with beautiful colors and refreshing silhouettes. Her story started out with a crisp helping of white skirts, either pleated or tulip-shaped, paired with embroidered tops. Then came the drama: complex lace jacquard trousers, chantilly lace shifts, silk faille dresses, and even slim-fitting bermuda shorts were swathed in rich hues of deep ocean blue, purple, and forest green. All of which showed off Vera's eye for intricate details like jeweled epaulettes and necklines adding just the right amount of sparkle and shine. The show ended with a red-carpet-worthy gilded v-neck embroidered gown — which lucky celebrity will get to wear this one? Bravo, Vera.

  • Trends: Bermuda shorts, embellishment, lace, sheer detailing, jacquard, tulip skirts.
  • Colors: White, blue, navy, purple, forest green, chartreuse, gold.
  • Key Piece: There were actually two: the purple silk faille off-shoulder dress and the forest-green lace sheath.
  • Accessories: Tall, nude-colored, ankle-wrap platform sandals.
  • Who Should Wear It: Those lace sheaths have Kate Bosworth's name written all over them; Nina Dobrev would also stun in the purple off-shoulder dress.

Grab your hair spray and teasing comb, because hair is reaching great heights for Fall.

Grab your hair spray and teasing comb, because hair is reaching great heights for Fall. Oversize styles were swarming the runways during Fall 2012 Fashion Week. Vera Wang (left) incorporated teased strands into a swept-back updo, while Derek Lam (upper right) and Carolina Herrera (lower right) channeled the '60s with their perfect poufs. These ballooning styles may be a little drastic for everyday wear, but it's easy to translate this hot trend into a more toned-down style. Learn the simple secrets when you keep reading.

Vera Wang Has Separated From Husband Arthur Becker

Vera Wang has separated from her husband, Arthur Becker, after 23 years of marriage.

Vera Wang has separated from her husband, Arthur Becker, after 23 years of marriage.

A spokeswoman for Wang said the couple "mutually and amicably agreed to separate. They remain devoted parents to their two daughters."

Becker, a businessman, has not commented on the separation. He advised Wang as she built her business and is said to have advocated her expansion into mass market categories. He resigned from his position as CEO of NaviSite in 2010 and has become more involved in the day-to-day operations at Vera Wang over the last few years. A friend of Wang's said, "They will not let this impact the running of the company. They have worked too hard to build it up."

The couple married in New York City's Pierre Hotel in 1989, when Wang was just shy of her 40th birthday, and have since had two daughters, Cecilia and Josephine.

In a 2006 New York Magazine profile, Wang said she "was the girl who nobody thought would ever get married."

"I was going to be a fashion nun the rest of my life," she said. "There are generations of them, those fashion nuns, living, eating, breathing clothes. But Ralph said, 'Get yourself a husband and a family.' Anna said, 'You have got to get a family going here. You've been single for three decades now.' So I married my husband. There are days I'm not happy I did it, but there are days I'm thrilled — I mean, he has always understood my nature, which is that it’s always about product."
