>> Versace may have done without a blonde for the Fall 2011 collection campaign, but Donatella Versace couldn't leave blondes behind for an entire season, as evidenced by her new eyewear and accessories face. Preview Versace's Upcoming H&M Collection
>> H&M has announced its next collaborator: Versace. Donatella Versace looked back at the house archives to reinterpret classic Versace designs from 1978 to today — "iconic Versace pieces [from] iconic Versace moments" as she put it — for the collection, which will encompass around 40 pieces for women, as well as a 20-piece collection for men and a selection of homeware (think bedspreads and pillows).
Since the collection is debuting on November 17 (in 300 stores worldwide and online) — right in the thick of party season, as Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor at H&M, points out — it will be dominated by gold studded leather dresses (one of which Donatella was "so excited" about that she wore yesterday to take her bow at the Versace men's show), colorful silk and print dresses, high heels, and costume jewelry.
Versace also designed a Pre-Spring collection for H&M that will be exclusively available in countries with H&M online sales (Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Holland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the United Kingdom) starting on January 19, 2012. See Versace talk about the collaboration in the video below, and preview the collection in the slideshow.
H&M Announces Its Next Guest Designer: Versace!
Versace, that storied Italian brand known for luxury and total bombshell sexiness, has partnered with H&M on a capsule collection to be released November 17, 2011. According to WWD, the collection will focus on the brand's heritage, and will include men's, women's, and home. In a video posted on Versace's website, Donatella reveals, "Of course there will be print. Of course there will be leather. It's going to be bold. It's going to be glamorous. It's going to be exciting. [It's going to be] rock'n'roll." As evidence, Donatella wore one of the dresses from the forthcoming collection when she took her bow at the Milan men's show yesterday. What does that mean? We have a sneak peek at a few designs from the forthcoming collection, as well as highlights from seasons past and memorable looks from the glamazon herself, Donatella. Versace Ushers In a New Era with a Brunette Face
>> Versace is in a state of change, Donatella Versace confirms. For the first time ever, she recently opened the house archives for a music video — Lady Gaga's new "Edge of Glory" video, to be exact — in which Gaga wears a strappy vintage Versace corset top and shorts, both in gold studded black leather. Style.com noted the change in direction earlier this week at Versace's Resort 2012 preview, of which many were reportedly commenting, "I'm not a Versace girl, but I'd wear that."
The house's Fall 2011 campaign is also perpetuating a new Versace era; instead of Mario Testino, who has done Versace campaign honors since 2004, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott were the photographers of choice, a Versace first. And rather than featuring a celebrity or a blonde — as is typical for Versace — the campaign focuses on the brunette Saskia de Brauw. “For me, it is expected to have the blonde girl, the sexy girl, and this is what Versace meant recently,” explained Donatella. “But I thought about how in the past, when Gianni used girls like Kristen McMenamy and Stella Tennant, everyone was always saying, ‘Wow, this is not a Versace girl, she is not blonde.’ Sometimes you need to renew yourself to work better and to make a little bit of a push.”
Of the resulting images, Versace added: “It’s a glamorous woman and it’s a little pop, which I love. Mert and Marcus are very talented and full of ideas. This season is just the beginning. I want to push something different and new.”
Versace Resort 2012
>> Donatella Versace sunk herself into the house archives to produce the grommeted, bustiered, scarf-hemlined, and exposed-zippered Versace Resort 2012 collection. The tropical print that peppered a selection of minidresses — inspired by Matisse's Bouquet — likewise was rooted in the hothouse prints touted by Versace in the mid-90s. The full collection, including a black leather trench perforated with thousands of crescent moons, modeled by house favorite Daphne Groeneveld in the slideshow.
Allegra Versace Beck Gives Rare Interview, Has Started Working on Designing Versace
>> After many years of reluctance, Allegra Versace Beck — the majority shareholder with a 50 percent stake in Versace — has started collaborating on the brand's collections, taking her first steps into the design studio, she tells La Repubblica (translated from Italian): "I have asked my mother — I was reluctant at first, because I know little of finance — but then I realized that it was necessary for me to understand, participate, learn of this world."
She continued: "The idea made me very uncomfortable, then I calmed down. I have already started working in the office — they are all boys of my age, and I managed to convince them that I am not a mistress, but like them in that I have the ability to do this creative work ... I am the only unpaid one, that's the one difference. We became friends, often we go out together. "
Further highlights, below.
On going to the United States to study and recover from anorexia: "I call this my period of absence, I was lost in other thoughts and couldn't confront reality, with my eyes shielded from everything. Above all, I wanted one thing — to be no one, to not be recognized, not be hunted down. I studied theater, and it pleased me greatly to play parts in little independent films that perhaps no one went to see. For example, I really loved Little Miss Sunshine. Still, anywhere I went, I was a Versace. I couldn't escape, and it did me harm. I hated Los Angeles. However I did have beautiful moments. For example, when I was in New York, Rupert Everett played in Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit, and I, behind the scenes, acted invisibly as a dresser."
On whether she's reconciled with being a Versace: "Definitely, I still prefer the anonymity. I've spent some time working with a non-Italian designer, I've been helping him organize fashion shows, the advertising, also helping with the creative part. But the great part about this work is that I am no one! They pay me, also, of course — for now not enough to live without worries — but I think you can get used to everything, if you feel free, if you are yourself and not what others want you to be, if you don't see a photographer around every corner, if you do not bury yourself in cruel gossip that does so much harm."
On the differences between herself and her mother, Donatella Versace: "We are so close even if she is different from me — she is impetuous and determined, I am reflective and quiet. She uses celebrity in the service of work; I hate that celebrity."
