Kate Moss and Gisele Bundchen are on the list of the 10 women who have the most Vogue covers in history — but they're not on top.

Kate Moss and Gisele Bundchen are on the list of the 10 women who have the most Vogue covers in history — but they're not on top.

That honor belongs to model and actress Lauren Hutton, who has graced the cover of the fashion bible 26 times since 1966. The second spot on the list belongs to another model and actress, Jean Shrimpton, who was photographed for the cover 20 times. Bundchen and Moss are at the bottom of the list, with 11 and 8 covers, respectively. A look at the other lovely women who've enjoyed more Vogue covers than anyone else in the list below.

  • Lauren Hutton: 26 covers
  • Jean Shrimpton: 20 covers
  • Karen Graham: 20 covers
  • Cindy Crawford: 18 covers
  • Claudia Schiffer: 16 covers
  • Jean Patchett: 16 covers
  • Amber Valletta: 16 covers
  • Veruschka: 12 covers
  • Gisele Bundchen: 11 covers

Legendary Supermodels: Then and Now

What Supermodels Look Like Now

In the 1990s, it was all about the "big six" models, an aesthetically-blessed group that consisted of top earners such as Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, and Cindy Crawford.

While a debate exists over who coined the term supermodel, Swedish model Lisa Fonssagrives, who was at the height of her career from the '30s through the '50s, is often credited as the world's first. But many models who came afterward earned legendary status. So to see what some of these famed models are up to now, just read on.

Veruschka Didn't Like Modeling in Giles's Spring 2011 Show

>> 71-year-old Veruschka modeled for Giles Deacon's Spring 2011 show last month, but it sounds like she didn't much enjoy it: "I didn’t like the makeup in the show, and didn’t think much of the dress."

She says she felt like a gimmick, and added that designers no longer have the skills to dress women who are not children with bodies that look like ironing boards. When it was pointed out that her star turn in Blow-Up perpetuated the super-thin model look, she replied, "I was in my 20s when I made the movie and found success. We were women, not children. [Yes,] I was tall and I was thin. But just before shooting started I had been on a fashion assignment in Mexico and became terribly sick from drinking the water. I lost so much weight and was really ill and weak when I made the movie." [Daily Mail]

After Veruschka at Giles, What Does Katie Grand Have in Store Casting-Wise at Louis Vuitton and Emanuel Ungaro?

>> Katie Grand is known for cultivating unique model casts — last season at Giles and Louis Vuitton, both of which she styles, there was a proliferation of Victoria's Secret models on the runway.

>> Katie Grand is known for cultivating unique model casts — last season at Giles and Louis Vuitton, both of which she styles, there was a proliferation of Victoria's Secret models on the runway. And while she brought back some of those "curvier" girls for Giles again this season — Alessandra Ambrosio, Ana Beatriz Barros, Anne Vyalitsyna, Noemie Lenoir, plus Sports Illustrated models Jessica Hart, Abbey Clancy (who is pregnant), and Julie Ordon — also peppered in were Agyness Deyn, who shaved her hair into a mohawk for the show, Amber Le Bon, British model and TV presenter Kelly Brook, and 71-year-old Veruschka, who closed the show.

Grand is working with Giles Deacon on his debut collection for Emanuel Ungaro this season — so surely the cast will be special for that occasion — although the only hint that came is not model-related: Deacon is working with edgy London label Sibling on knits for the show. And as for Vuitton, all Grand would say was: “[Marc Jacobs] said, ‘I’ve got all these beautiful clothes for Vuitton — what on earth are we going to do with them?’”

Fab Ad: Gucci Timepieces, Spring '10

At first glance, I thought the youthful cutie in Gucci's Spring '10 watch campaign was Miranda Kerr.

At first glance, I thought the youthful cutie in Gucci's Spring '10 watch campaign was Miranda Kerr. Way wrong: the beauty pictured in the black and white backdrop is actually the lovely Veruschka. The photo, which dates back to the '60s, was taken from the Gucci archives and layered with an image of Gucci's new timepiece. Similar process to what Stella McCartney did for her Spring campaign, but with a Veruschka and the late actor Peter Sellers instead of the family dog. There's no better way to show off the meaning of timeless beauty than with Veruschka looking so elegant and chic in her floppy hat and Gucci logo-adorned bags. The watch is pretty awesome, too. Are you feeling Gucci's old-school ads?

Model Muse: Veruschka

Contortionist or model? Here she is.
Photos of Model 1960s Veruschka

Contortionist or model? Here she is. One cannot be a model fan without paying tribute to the greats. Meet Veruschka. One of the ripest models of the '60s. The German countess arrived in NYC and her amazonian looks quickly took the city by storm. At 6'1", with size 13 feet, she had the keen ability to seduce with her limbs, and she did so all over the world with her boyfriend photographer, Franco Rubartelli (who captured her infamous body paint photos). Italian film buff? Then you've seen her famous scene in Blowup. If not — a Fab '60s Antonioni mod film you should Netflix. At the beginning of the scene she announces, "Here I am." Her costar David Hemmings declared, "She moves like nobody on earth." Meet Veruschka, and you'll know what he meant . . .

On Our Radar: The Costume Institute Celebrates Models

Models have paid their dues in the industry so it's high time someone pays them the respect they deserve.

Models have paid their dues in the industry so it's high time someone pays them the respect they deserve. That someone will be The Costume Institute Gala in their upcoming presentation dubbed, "The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion,” which explores fashion, and the constantly changing ideas of beauty.

The exhibit raises the question of models serving as designer muses. Marc Jacobs, honorary chairman for the exhibit, states:

“The idea of muses or models, whether it is someone you know or someone you have seen in an image, someone of your imagination or a creature of your own invention, is important to every designer and every collection. I hate talking about inspiration, but everyone needs a catalyst. We look at this person, this model, this muse, and we design for her. It seems like a kind of fundamental thing, but wide open for lots of great clothes.”

Models Get Their Due at 2009 Costume Institute Gala

>> Hints at the 2009 Costume Institute Gala theme have been swirling since May — first, it was thought to be an ode to Marc Jacobs, and then an ode to fashion muses.  Now that the official announcement has come out, we learn that both subjects are involved, just not quite in the way that was originally thought: the May 4 gala rings in "The Model as Muse," with Marc Jacobs as honorary chair, and Kate Moss, Anna Wintour, and Justin Timberlake as co-chairs.The accompanying exhibit, which runs May 6 to Aug.

>> Hints at the 2009 Costume Institute Gala theme have been swirling since May — first, it was thought to be an ode to Marc Jacobs, and then an ode to fashion muses.  Now that the official announcement has come out, we learn that both subjects are involved, just not quite in the way that was originally thought: the May 4 gala rings in "The Model as Muse," with Marc Jacobs as honorary chair, and Kate Moss, Anna Wintour, and Justin Timberlake as co-chairs.

The accompanying exhibit, which runs May 6 to Aug. 9, will explore the evolution of models and "their roles in projecting and sometimes inspiring the fashion of their respective eras," with special focus on one of the first publicly known models, Marion Morehouse; the first supermodel, Lisa Fonssagrives; fifties mannequins Suzy Parker, Dovima, Sunny Harnett, and Dorian Leigh; sixties icons Jean Shrimpton, Moffitt, Twiggy, and Veruschka; Seventies faces Jerry Hall, Iman, and Janice Dickinson; the supermodel trinity of Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell; Nineties “It” girls Kate Moss, Amber Valletta, Nadja Auermann, and Shalom Harlow; and more recently, Gisele Bundchen.

As Harold Koda, curator of the Costume Institute, explained: "We look at the power of clothing, fashion photography and the model to project the look of an era. With a mere gesture, or the line of her body, a truly stellar model can sum up the attitude of her time, creating an alluring synergy between herself and the clothing to communicate a designer’s message to the wider world."

Seventy haute couture and ready-to-wear looks, plus photography, runway images, and video footage of models, rock stars, socialites and actresses who set the tone for each era will emphasize the theme, but most exciting of all — think of all the models who will be representing at the gala.

You can take the woman out of fashion, but you can't take fashion out of the woman — she may not be interested in attending shows, but Veruschka did stop by the Supreme offices to shoot a few polaroids.
