Sweet Carolyn: Murphy Shines on the Cover of Vogue Australia

Winter may be settling in across the United States, but Summer's just starting to heat up in the land down under — thanks in part to Carolyn Murphy's January cover of Vogue Australia.

Winter may be settling in across the United States, but Summer's just starting to heat up in the land down under — thanks in part to Carolyn Murphy's January cover of Vogue Australia.

Regan Cameron photographed the blond bombshell for the cover and an editorial in the magazine called "Sweet Carolyn." Vogue Australia's editor in chief said picking Murphy for the cover was a no-brainer. "She's so picture perfect that she's often cast as a mannequin," McCann said, "but as a laid-back keen surfer, she's equally at ease in these luxe, hippie looks."

Elsewhere in the issue, there are interviews with Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga and an essay by Erin Brockovich. For now, a look at the cover and a few images from Murphy's shoot here in the gallery.

Raf Speaks! Dior's Creative Director Talks Galliano and Jil Sander

Interviews with Raf Simons are few and far between, but the new creative director of Dior says it's not because he's press-shy.

Interviews with Raf Simons are few and far between, but the new creative director of Dior says it's not because he's press-shy. "I don't know where you got the idea that I'm aloof," he says in the December issue of Vogue Australia.

Far from aloof, Simons is almost effusive, touching on everything from John Galliano (he says he doesn't find his designs "relevant") to his vision for Dior's future. He also talks about making the transition from Jil Sander to one of the most coveted jobs in fashion and how he wants to change couture. Highlights from the interview below.

On John Galliano: "I have so much respect for John's technical skill and the fantasy, it's just something that I don't find relevant now, especially when it restricts a woman, because in every other area they have so much freedom now."

On getting the Dior job and his sudden departure from Jil Sander: "I'm not going to lie to you. We [Bernard Arnault, head of LVMH, and Sidney Toledano, president of Dior] had been talking for months about the job, but talks happen all the time in this business. That doesn't mean something is necessarily going to come out of it. . . I felt more like a psychiatrist than a designer in the end [at Jil Sander], just to keep my team's spirits up."

On his final show at Jil Sander: "That final collection was not in any way an audition for the Dior job. It was just something I wanted to do."

On Dior's impact on fashion: "The more I analyzed the pieces, the more I realized how many people have built their careers on Christian Dior's patterns, from Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garcons onwards. What he achieved in 10 years at his house is unprecedented."

On what he's trying to accomplish: "I want to get away from couture just being done for a picture, or for a single moment on the red carpet. I want to try and convince women that couture can be worn in the day and that there's a reality and a relevance there, because that's what Mr. Christian Dior wanted. In my opinion, Christian Dior was never, ever theater."

Now that everyone's lives are somewhat back to normal (read: Fashion Month is over), perhaps we'll all have a little extra time to thumb through some of the stunning November 2012 issues of our favorite magazines.

This month's selection of images runs the gamut from colorful and sparkly, like Taylor Swift on the cover of Glamour, to clean, spare, and high-end — Aymeline Valade's cover of Vogue Japan, on which she wears a piece from Raf Simons's debut couture collection for Christian Dior, is a perfect example.

A look at all the covers revealed thus far here, in the gallery.

Vogue Australia Editor Replaced by Editor of Harper's Bazaar Australia

Kirstie Clements, who had been editor in chief of Vogue Australia for 10 years, was let go and replaced by Harper's Bazaar Australia editor Edwina McCann on Wednesday.

Kirstie Clements, who had been editor in chief of Vogue Australia for 10 years, was let go and replaced by Harper's Bazaar Australia editor Edwina McCann on Wednesday.

News reports called the staff change sudden and attributed it to an overall shift in the culture at Rupert Murdoch-owned NewsLifeMedia, which publishes Vogue and other magazines in Australia. Clements was one of three senior executives at the company let go recently. The firings came in the wake of Kim Williams's appointment as CEO of Australian media conglomerate News Limited, which runs NewsLifeMedia, last December.

McCann had been editor in chief of Harper's Bazaar Australia for three years but had worked at Vogue Australia previously. She starts her new job in July.

"I am very excited about returning to work for the world's most powerful fashion media brand," she said. "The opportunities for this formidable brand online and in a social media landscape are endless and our future is very bright indeed."

Myf Shepherd Returns to Modeling After Year Hiatus

>> After taking a year-long hiatus to study set design in Sydney, Myf Shepherd is back in the modeling game. "I was too young when I started," 19-year-old Shepherd recently told The Daily Telegraph. "I wasn't really ready for how competitive and everything the real world is, so I just needed to take some time to be a regular teenager. Modeling can be really stressful. You have to look after yourself."

A spread appearing in Vogue Australia's February 2011 issue is Shepherd's first job back at work, her Australian agency confirms: “Myf’s back modelling. She’s continuing on with her studies but she’s very excited to be based in Sydney now and modelling for top end magazines and securing some major Australian campaigns as well. She may go back for the [Spring 2011 Couture or Fall 2011] shows, although there are no plans at this stage. But things happen very quickly, there’s a slight chance she may."
