Jessica Biel Gets Honest About Hollywood For Vogue

Jessica Biel went all-American in Ralph Lauren denim for the February cover of Vogue.

Jessica Biel went all-American in Ralph Lauren denim for the February cover of Vogue. Her outfits lately have been a little less glamorous as she finishes her Mt. Kilimanjaro trek, but the Valentine's Day star also got decked out in a sparkly gown for the shoot — check out a behind-the-scenes video. Jessica chatted with the magazine's Jonathan Van Meter about life in Hollywood, as well as her ill-advised early photos and her sexy image. Here's more:

  • On her work in LA: "The last year in this business has been harsh. There’s no material. Nobody wants to make dramas. And that’s what we all want to do. . . [there's only] commercial movies—horror movies, big romantic comedies, and action movies. Those can be great, but you don’t want to do only those kinds of films. You can’t live on éclairs alone. You have to have a spinach salad every now and again."
  • On posing for nearly nude photos at age 17: "I really wanted to go to college, and it all kind of happened at the same time. I did this photo shoot; the photo shoot came out; it was terribly embarrassing. I had to apologize to everybody, including my parents. It was a big learning experience: learning how to have boundaries and how to say no."
  • On her va-va-voom image: "When I see myself in pictures with makeup on, even to this day, I think it looks weird. My eyes get squintier and smaller. On the red carpet, I’m playing a character. As soon as I get off that thing I think, 'Oof, wipe that gloss off.' I’m wiping and wiping and pulling my hair out and trying to change my outfit. I’m immediately trying to get comfortable. It’s really a part I play."

Anna Wintour Would Love to See Jessica Biel Play Designer's Muse

Jessica Biel is on the cover of February Vogue wearing Ralph Lauren's denim-heavy Great Recession collection. Inside the actress mostly talks about how uncomfortable she is in makeup and on the red carpet, but it's Anna Wintour's letter from the editor that has us guessing she'll soon appear alongside American designers at fashion awards and in an ad campaign or two come fall.

"I think my Valentine's wish would be that she be embraced by and play a larger role in the fashion world," wrote Wintour. "She symbolized everything American fashion stands for: health, beauty, fitness, and grace. She'd make a great partner for any designer."

Take that as your marching orders, American designers. Vogue's February issue will be on newsstands January 26.

Anna Wintour's Golden Year

This year, Anna Wintour became a household name. Fashion fans have been following the highly touted American Vogue editor for eons, but her presence grew this year thanks to The September Issue. But it wasn't just about fame and stardom for the editrix, she also worked her butt off behind-the-seams spearheading Fashion's Night Out. Anna brought fun, hope, and fabulous fêtes back to the industry during troubled economic times. Now that is the work of an elite editor.

Grace Coddington, September Issue Director Collaborating on Another Film?

>> Grace Coddington has been spotted dining often with The September Issue director RJ Cutler, and it sounds like it's not just purely out of friendship.  When Coddington was in London last week for the British Fashion Awards, she told the Times UK Cutler is working her illustrated book Catwalk Cats into a film treatment: “It’s a bit of a battle, actually.

I’m fighting for it not to turn into some Disney thing.”

Despite all the newfound attention The September Issue has brought her — at least five people come up to her on the subway every morning — she's not planning on becoming a press hound:

Do you ever see me giving interviews? I’m never one of those people talking into a microphone at the end of a show. I’m not prepared to crush some poor designer who’s just spent six months slaving over a collection. I think it’s horrible and they all [the pundits] talk about themselves. Plus, the questions are so stupid . . . I hate trends. And you know the question they always ask me at shows; ‘What’s the latest trend?’”

Rachel Remains Mysterious on the Cover of Vogue

Rachel McAdams is on the cover of Vogue's January issue, just in time to talk about her new movie Sherlock Holmes.

Rachel McAdams is on the cover of Vogue's January issue, just in time to talk about her new movie Sherlock Holmes. Even though she's a natural working the red carpet, she seems happiest when enjoying some of life's more simple things. She opened up to the magazine about her new green mentality, how she grew up, and her thoughts on relationships. Rachel also talked about working with Lindsay Lohan, years ago on Mean Girls. Here's more:

  • On working with Lindsay Lohan in Mean Girls: "I just remember marveling about how much she knew as an actor, how much she understood. She did very few takes and had this naturalness to her. And beyond that, I was 26 at the time. I’d be asked, ‘Where do you go out?' . . . I felt like I was in a different place at that time."
  • On how going green affects her wanting things: "I don't really desire things. I prefer to spend my money on experiences, on meals or travel. . . I look at the world through a green lens now, but you can't make yourself crazy. That feeling of green guilt can be really inhibiting. It's about a changing mindset, remembering to turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth."
  • On relationships: "I'm pretty good on my own, and I like just getting out and walking, which seems very rudimentary."
  • On how she grew up: "My mother never put an emphasis on looks. She let us grow up on our own time line. She never forced any beauty regimen into my world."
