Christina Ricci's New Endeavor: Makeup Bag Designer

Christina Ricci is trying her hand at design in a collaboration with Make Up For Ever.

Christina Ricci is trying her hand at design in a collaboration with Make Up For Ever. The actress created a faux leather makeup bag complete with studs and tough-girl screen print for the beauty brand. "My inspiration for the bag was hard rock meets couture," Christina told WWD. "I added a red lip motif to the geometric design since I love wearing red lipstick. Plus I thought it would add a fun pop of color." The bag will be available next month as part of the nine-city Make Up Bag Remix tour. The brand wants to encourage women to explore new ways to use products they already own. And perhaps they will convince consumers to fill Christina's bag with their latest releases in the process.

Katie Holmes Enters a Business Deal With Alterna

Katie Holmes has inked yet another beauty deal, this time with hair brand Alterna.

Katie Holmes has inked yet another beauty deal, this time with hair brand Alterna. Last year, she began a partnership with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. However, her new role will not only include being the face of the brand in advertising campaigns, but also as co-owner, she'll have a voice in product development. "I love that Alterna uses natural and organic ingredients and stays away from harsh chemicals like sulfates and parabens," Katie told WWD. "It's good for my hair and good for the earth, so I feel good using it."

In the future, Katie's new role might merge with her fashion endeavor Holmes & Yang. Alterna representatives teased the possibility of a limited-edition accessories project. Katie isn't the first actress to break into the business side of beauty. Jennifer Aniston recently gained a stake in Living Proof. It seems brands are no longer on the hunt for just a gorgeous face; now being a spokesmodel requires business savvy. "Katie is a fashionista, a mother and an entrepreneur. In short, she is our consumer," said Joan Malloy, president of Alterna. "Like her, this is a brand that has been very much around, but hiding in plain sight."

Just when you think you're one step ahead of the game (hello, Spring 2013), designers push the seasonal envelope with another onslaught of covet-worthy collections to contend with. That's right, Pre-Fall 2013 is here. Sure, the pieces may not be available for a while, nor will they be all that applicable come warm-weather turnaround, but — and this is a big but — there is enough spot-on styling inspiration inside to cultivate a fresh spin on your wintry wares now. If you're on the lookout for a new layered approach, Tibi's sportier urban-chic look (think varsity jackets and NYC Transit Map-inspired prints) provides a good starting point. If you plan on sticking to feminine silhouettes, Carven's lace-covered, crisp-collared minidresses might be exactly what your styling M.O. needs. Or, if you're just craving a midseason pick-me-up, Yigal Azrouël's python-infused black biker jackets are kind of amazing. Click on for the best of Pre-Fall 2013, and keep in mind that next year's fashion can be today's outfit fodder.

The New Year is already bringing new designer collaborations to look forward to, namely a 60-plus-item men's and women's collection from Milly's Michelle Smith for Banana Republic. While a special collection is nothing new for the retailer, who has brought television- and film-inspired collaborations to the masses — drawing on the dramatic period fashion of both Mad Men and Anna Karenina — in addition to a capsule collection with Trina Turk and a line of Virgin America flight-crew uniforms, this is an exciting way to give Milly a much broader audience. Smith was ready for the opportunity and a challenge (did we mention this is the first time the designer has tackled menswear?), but she says, "It's a very positive, happy collection. The colors and patterns capture the modern spirit of Summer." What else can you expect? A new print created just for the capsule, six updated Milly prints, vibrant hues, and the easy, breezy vibe of the Hamptons-chic beach lifestyle. The collaboration — which is priced from $45-$175 for women's apparel, $25-$65 for menswear, and $40-$130 for jewelry and accessories — hits stores in May in select Banana Republic locations worldwide and online.

Herbal Essences Is Bringing Back the Urge

Fans of the '90s, your call has been heard: Herbal Essences is slated to revive two of the product lines that put it on the map.

Fans of the '90s, your call has been heard: Herbal Essences is slated to revive two of the product lines that put it on the map. The Smooth and Shine collections are making their respective comebacks in February, and will be encapsulated in the iconic translucent bottles that got the boot in 2006, according to WWD. The relaunch comes on the heels of declining sales. But the company hopes to recapture some of its long-lost loyalists by reviving these fan favorites.

The shampoos and conditioners share the same scents and looks of their predecessors, but the formulas are now sulfate- and silicone-free. And remember those sexual-innuendo-filled commercials that promised "a totally organic experience"? Details are still hush-hush, but tune in to the Grammy Awards on Feb. 10 for a nostalgia-inducing spot. Then scoot on over to the drugstore, pick up some shampoo, and satisfy your urge for Herbal.
