LA Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Whitley Kros

Whitley's Kros bohemian babe continues her journey through another LA Fashion Week.

Whitley's Kros bohemian babe continues her journey through another LA Fashion Week. This time, striped tunics, easy-wear silk separates, animal prints, and the necessary Spring jumpsuit are falling out of her suitcase. Colors range from ivory to sherbet hues and vivid brights. A couple full-on exotic prints made their way onto loose blouses and skirts. Sheer also made a sexy cameo. The traveling elephant print is adorable and youthful. Layered beaded and gold jewelry adds keen styling and the funky knotted buns atop the models' heads would make Punky Brewster proud. While there are lots of messages in this collection, it is cohesive. This stylish nomad has clearly mastered the art of sophisticated mix matching.

When I first met Whitley Kros designers Marissa Ribisi and Sophia Banks backstage at their fashion show at LA Fashion Week, they were excited to take their business to the web. One of their goals was to be huge online. After much anticipation, the duo can achieve their dream, because WhitleyKros.com has officially claimed its space on the Internet. As expected, it's an intriguing site filled with past collection photos and video, and a place to purchase your favorite pieces. The ABC Tee ($127) that Kate Hudson owns may be of interest to you. Trend Alert

LA Fashion Week Trend Alert: Little Red Riding Hood

Randomly, Little Red Riding Hood made an appearance on the catwalks of LA Fashion Week.

Randomly, Little Red Riding Hood made an appearance on the catwalks of LA Fashion Week. Except, the brave little girl came in the form of tall, beanpole models showing off a Fall 2008 trend: hoods. Striped cardigans had hoods at the Whitley Kros show (left); coats at the Alexis Lamontagna collection came hooded (right); and one of Octavio Carlin's silk dresses even incorporated the style. Before hoods signified a laid-back style, now they are a symbol of dressed-up cool. Come Fall, throwing on a frock with a hood means looking slick and covering up a bad hair day!

LA Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Whitley Kros

It was all checkerboard chicks at Whitley Kros' Fall '08 show!

It was all checkerboard chicks at Whitley Kros' Fall '08 show! This time around, Marissa Ribisi (Giovanni's twin sis, in case you forgot) and Sophia Banks whipped up a more '80s-inspired collection, but as always, they delivered the fun.

Models, including America's Next Top Model cycle nine second runner up Chantal Jones, sashayed down the catwalk in oodles of plaid, large black and white checkers, and zebra-emblazoned pieces, as stars like Bijou Phillips and Jenna Elfman looked on. Polished high-waisted skirts and cardigan dresses balanced out the masculine baggy trousers and blazers.

A few zebra-in-the-crotch pants were random, but I much appreciated the two-tone fringe scarves and bursts of vibrant colors. Any collection that can have fun despite the moodiness of Fall is Fab in my book.

Love It or Hate It

Whitley Kros Navy and Creme Cardigan: Love It or Hate It?

I knew this cardigan looked familiar when I saw it!

I knew this cardigan looked familiar when I saw it! When I interviewed Whitley Kros co-founder Sophia Banks at LA Fashion Week in October, she was wearing something similar to this Whitley Kros Navy and Creme Cardigan ($286). I love stripes so this would be great for a casual day of running errands. Do you love it or hate it?

2008 spring

LA Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Whitley Kros

Long-time friends, Marissa Ribisi, Giovanni's twin sister and Beck's wife, and Sophia Banks have banded together to create a fun and wearable Spring collection.

Long-time friends, Marissa Ribisi, Giovanni's twin sister and Beck's wife, and Sophia Banks have banded together to create a fun and wearable Spring collection.

Plaids, big stripes and funky prints graced kimono-sleeve cardigans, tunics, jumpsuits and t-shirt dresses. Solids were not ignored; bright hues like cobalt blue, neon yellow and hot pink made appearances with silk tops, footless tights, oversized cardigans, high-waisted skirts, and off-the-shoulder tees. Screen-printed tees included unicorns, guitars and the ABCs. It's obvious the designers paid special attention to denim. They were skinny, colored, cropped, folded, and finished with a white fly button. All were well-made and fit the models like a glove.
