Alek Wek's stellar modeling career has taken her all across the globe, but it's been years since she's been back to her homeland in the Sudan — until she traveled there this month. Wek, who was the first African model to cover Elle, went to the newly formed nation of South Sudan to help celebrate the country's very first independence day. She's also working with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to help the country develop and grow, and told us that for now, her work in fashion will take a backseat to her humanitarian efforts.

"I will carry on utilizing my voice to give back: that's long term," she said over the phone in Juba, South Sudan's capital. "I'm already modeling in moderation because my mom is already on my case. At first it was like, 'Education, then a job, and now what's happening, where are the babies?'" she added, laughing. "So I think you can't just be hopping around in planes. You need to slow down a little bit."

However, Wek said that working in fashion was important, because it gave her the platform to affect change. "It's definitely given me a voice, and I think we have such a responsibility to use that," she explained. "Even if I wasn't a fashion model . . . I still think that we all as individuals can do something and make a difference in another human being's life."

To that end, Wek — who has walked the runway for Dior, Valentino, and Diane von Furstenberg, among others — has focused on helping the UNHCR develop agriculture, health, and education initiatives in the country. While she was there this month, Wek visited the nation's new first lady, spent time with refugees waiting to travel back to their hometowns, and spoke at a conference about the importance of schooling children — and especially young women. "When you educate a woman, the entire nation is educated," she said during her speech.

"Who's going to lead this country going forward is the young people, the youth, which I feel really strongly about," she told us. "When you educate the young people, you don't just educate them to be literate. You educate them to not repeat the same bad mistakes that have taken place in the past."

A look back at Wek's decade-plus on the runway, here in the gallery.

Gathering at the Museum of Modern Art last night, some of our favorites in fashion stepped out for amfAR's second annual Inspiration Gala. Inside, Michael Kors was honored as the recipient of the organization's Award of Courage, given to recognize his efforts to combat AIDS. While on the red carpet, Kors seemed to be the designer of choice among the night's guests. Jennifer Hudson, who also performed at the benefit, opted for a short, white Michael Kors sheath and mirrored platform sandals while Heidi Klum took to the red carpet in Kors's draped, aqua-blue halter gown. Meanwhile, Alek Wek showed off a funkier style in a fringed and sequined trimmed dress, and Chanel Iman opted for rich, saturated color and dramatic eyes. Now we're putting it to you — who's your pick for best dressed?

Gisele Bundchen and Katie Holmes Get Together For Beauty Culture

Katie Holmes and Gisele Bundchen shared a red carpet last night to celebrate the Beauty Culture exhibit, which opens tomorrow, at the Annenberg Space For Photography in LA.

Katie Holmes and Gisele Bundchen shared a red carpet last night to celebrate the Beauty Culture exhibit, which opens tomorrow, at the Annenberg Space For Photography in LA. It's a collection of images from various photographers, including a snap of Gisele herself, designed to make viewers question the pursuit of beauty. More Hollywood stars came out for the event, including Halle Berry, Ali Larter, and Amber Heard. Supermodel Gisele wrote that she was home in LA after a quick trip to the Amazon, where she was able to do the environmental work that's close to her heart. She posted on her blog, "What a magical place the Amazon is, and so full of history and legends . . . I’m here, sharing my special experience and feelings so we can all think about it. We need and we want to develop, but not at the cost of damaging the planet." The visit was one of philanthropy and fashion, as there was a Gisele Bundchen bikini sighting in Sao Paolo when she took the runway for the Hope Valentine's Day special collection show last week. Katie, meanwhile, is back on the West Coast after a stop in Chicago to honor Oprah and a stint in Florida. She got some swimsuit time in as well when she hit the pool with daughter Suri at her Miami hotel, near where husband Tom Cruise has been working on Rock of Ages.

You may not know her name, but you definitely know her face. Name a runway, she's been on it. Name a designer, she's worn it. Who is this I'm talking about? None other than the Sudanese British force that is Alek Wek.

She first appeared on the catwalks in 1995 after she fled the Sudanese civil war and has been making headlines ever since. What I love about Alek is that she is sort of the unofficial poster child for what it means to be a dark-skinned beauty. Seriously, I don't know too many "redbones" who would DARE step to her. Furthermore, I don't know many who could grab the attention of the caliber of high end designers that she has. Whenever I see pictures of her I honestly get a little choked up. I can imagine that coming from Sudan she has an amazing story to tell and seeing the fame she's been able to accomplish is both humbling & inspiring. Even before I knew her name, I loved her.

Zac Posen's Fall 2010 Answer to His Growing Pains: Out with the Gowns, In with the Minidresses

>> After the New York Times article two weeks ago extensively covering Zac Posen's recent financial struggles, needless to say, eyes were peeled this morning bright and early at the Altman building for Posen's Fall 2010 plan of attack. Glenda Bailey, which the aforementioned article noted was not in attendance at Posen's show last season after they had a confrontation last April, was front row this time around, as were Posen's advertising photog Ellen von Unwerth, Patricia Field, Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington, Joe Zee, and Robbie Myers.

As the lights dimmed and runway photographers scrambled for their places, Israeli "hip-hop violinist" Miri Ben-Ari stepped from backstage to the left side of the runway, where she played her electric violin throughout the show, backed by a thumping bass.  Despite the fact that Posen is still going with a pared-down runway in general, the performance added the energy of his elaborate productions of yore.  The models, too — including Alek Wek, Hana Soukupova, Anne Vyalitsyna, Posen's muse Anna Cleveland, and Coco Rocha, who closed — were clearly told to smile and work the runway; Sessilee Lopez, hands on her waist, swung her hips with satisfaction.  Posen's boyfriend, Christopher Niquet, styled the show.

The clothes, however, were telltale that Posen is making an effort to resituate himself: there were none of his signature gowns whatsoever.  In their place, short skirts with flounce, '40-style trousers, and plenty of fur. "I'm playing with clean fabrications and upping the luxury level," he said backstage after taking his bow with Rocha and Kinee Diouf.

This Week's Fab Faves

Perhaps it's a coincidence, or not, but I've noticed that celebs are feeling all shades of blue this week.
Celebrity Outfits

Perhaps it's a coincidence, or not, but I've noticed that celebs are feeling all shades of blue this week. I had to be careful to not make this entire selection blue! Someone not wearing blue but looking stunning as ever was Zoe Saldana at the amfAR gala. Her ethnic-print Louis Vuitton dress is avant-garde enough to be interesting but not wacky. This girl gets it. Click through to see who else got it this week.
