Based on the novel by Jeffrey Eugenides, The Virgin Suicides is the sleepy portrayal of the five Lisbon sisters and their mysterious suicides, set in a 1970s Detroit suburb. While the subject matter is melancholic, it's hard to ignore the soft, feminine fashion. The film's dreamlike aesthetic and moody tone showcased lots of gauzy, retro-romantic babydoll dresses and ruffled tops, flat leather wedges, and girly, '70s-style eyelet and lace. Shop our picks below to crib the Lisbon sisters' easy, innocent style for Spring.

APC Founder Jean Touitou Goes Off on Fashion Week "Corruption," Chanel, and "Celebrity Culture"
>> Don't expect to see an APC show on any Fashion Week schedule — last night, the brand's opinionated founder Jean Touitou explained why: "I'm sorry to say there's too much corruption involved in Fashion Week. I won't take part in it. My days are very full doing what I'm doing. I don't want to deal with model agencies. Power conversations with model bookers makes me sick. Those people, they talk to you as if you've known them for 40 years, but you don't know them at all." Plus, he says: "I do not belong to celebrity culture. If people only knew what actresses are paid to sit in the front row at the shows in Milan or Paris, they would want to kill somebody. If they only knew 10 percent of what's going on, like brands that give bags away to young actresses and tell them to go in that restaurant on that day and leave the restaurant at 15 past 2:00, and hold the bag up for the paparazzi that will be there. This is a fact." He gives Chanel as an example of this practice: "If you're a young actress, it's now expected that once you start making it you'll receive a bag from Chanel. It's become a rite of passage. And it works, it's huge publicity for them. But at some point what's sad about it is that the very famous Chanel bag 2.55 — which I really love, my grandmother had one and my mother had one — is all over the place. I can't look at them anymore." [Hint]

21 Days of Resolutions: Stylish but Practical Footwear
We're thrilled to present our favorite Lucky story here on Fab!

Coordinating my daily footwear choices during the winter involves mapping out a complicated battle plan: Should I wear the heavy-duty boots all day and look silly at work? Forgo the boots and have cold (or worse! stepped-in-slush-wet!) feet during my commute? Wear wellies and schlep my heels to work in a giant, heavy tote?
What, exactly, is the best way to stay warm and dry without looking completely sloppy?
This year I am streamlining my morning footwear deliberation into a no-brainer routine—cute waterproof boots with skinnies or tights outside and a tiny rolled-up pair of flats in my purse for later. Here are some of my favorite combos:
1. Loeffler Randall rain boots with back zip, $195, loefflerrandall.com. Just like the trademark leather boots they are modeled after, these sleek boots have a subtle, leg-lengthening wedge.
2. Rodarte for Repetto ballerinas, $425, openingceremony.us. The mesmerizing marbleized effect of these butter-soft flats makes any outfit a showstopper.
3. Steve Madden Tsunamii rain boots, $79.95, zappos.com. Motorcycle buckles and a shock of red down the back make these cool-girl boots both gritty and fun.
4. Porselli ballerina flats, $122.50, usonline.apc.fr. A rusty red pairs well with worn-in corduroys during the winter but sets off a crisp white dress perfectly after the snow has melted.
5. Women's duck boots, $69.50, canvas.landsend.com. Something about these utilitarian booties makes me want to pull them on over chunky cabled socks.

Desire/Acquire: Modern Plaid Quilt
I'm a big qulit fan, so when BellaSugar introduced me to Jessica Ogden and Jean Touitou's The Quilt Project, I eagerly pored over the seven quilt designs, which hit Apc stores last week.
Hand-stitched in India in runs of 30 quilts per design, they use a patchwork of material used in past collections from Apc. I especially like the look of Quilt Q5A ($995), with its punchy use of plaids and ginghams.
I also love that fabric scraps are being upcycled into quilts — it's a great example of reuse from a major company — but at a cool thousand dollars per quilt, I'm definitely not going to be purchasing one anytime soon.
Do you love the look of this mad-for-plaid quilt, but don't want to spend this much for bedding? Check out this alternative.
