After announcing that it has partnered with designers from the Council of Fashion Designers of America on holiday products, eBay revealed Wednesday that it has signed on as a sponsor for the British Fashion Council's Fashion Forward initiative, which helps young designers develop their businesses.

The agreement takes effect starting with London Fashion Week Spring 2013, when eBay and the BFC will host an auction of British design to benefit Save the Children. Next January, the BFC will include eBay's head of fashion brands Melanie Smallwood on the panel of judges who will decide the next round of designers who will get Fashion Forward funding.

Fashion Forward is currently in its sixth year, and in the past it has supported Peter Pilotto, Christopher Kane, Jonathan Saunders, and Meadham Kirchhoff.

London-based Erdem Moralioglu beat out Christopher Kane, Angel Jackson, Clements Ribeiro, E. Tautz, Marios Schwab, Nicholas Kirkwood, and Richard Nicol to win the first BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund award, taking home the cash prize of £200,000.

Erdem told Vogue.com UK last week that should he win the grand prize, he would use the funds to hire more staff and invest in a new studio space.

"It is an honour," Moralioglu said upon receiving the award. "The prize will help us to take our business to the next level. It is so integral for us to be showing in London and the support of the BFC and Vogue will allow us to grow our business internationally. It is such an exciting time for us."

Of the eight finalists, Erdem was selected for his "strong design signature and clear vision for the immediate development and growth of his business," the BFC said.

Europe Fights to Ban Fashion Airbrushing

Europeans are taking a major stand against airbrushing in fashion photography.

Europeans are taking a major stand against airbrushing in fashion photography. Following a proposed law that would require all retouched photos be labeled, Europeans are now demanding a ban on all ads featuring digitally altered models targeting girls under 16 years old.

This follows a report that found "a correlation between unhealthy behavior in adolescents who are exposed to images of skinny, airbrushed models."

“The weight of the evidence . . . shows that thin, ‘perfected’ media images have a detrimental effect on how girls and women think and feel about their own bodies," said Dr. Helga Dittmar of the University of Sussex, one of the authors of the report.

Interesting; do you think the US should take a stand on airbrushed photography, too?

    >> Giles Deacon, who was awarded the €160,000 (approx. $225,000) 2009 ANDAM Award earlier this week, has confirmed that he's going to use it to take his Spring 2010 show to Paris this Fall. But in light of the recent efforts by the British Fashion Council to bring British designers back home for its 25th anniversary, Deacon, who is typically a headliner for London Fashion Week, is planning on meeting with BFC executives to try and work out a means of his label having some sort of "presence" at the upcoming LFW:  “It’s not perfect timing. I’m heading the other way, but it’s a fantastic opportunity, particularly in these times, and I have to seize it. It’s the chance to take my business to a new level.”

As for his Cruise 2010 collection, the designer went with simple, structured silhouettes in white, shades of gray, pale pink, and black.

    >> Over the weekend, a "strongly worded letter" from Vogue UK's Alexandra Shulman "sent to scores of designers in Europe and America" — including Prada, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, and Chanel — was leaked to the Times UK in what some are calling a publicity stunt.

In the letter, Shulman exhumed the size zero fight, accusing designers of an "increasingly disturbing" practice of sending fashion magazines "minuscule" clothes for photo shoots. "I am finding that the feedback from my readers and the general feeling in the UK is that people don't really want to see such thin girls."

She noted that the samples sent were becoming "substantially smaller": "Nowadays, I often ask the photographers to retouch to make the models appear larger." Furthermore, she wrote: "We have now reached a point where many of the sample sizes don't comfortably fit even the established star models. Instead, we are having to use girls with jutting bones and no breasts or hips, to fit them."

    So who's with her? »
