Betsey Johnson won a special CFDA Award in 1989 — but she said her best memory of the CFDA Fashion Awards was winning a trophy that the council didn't even give out. "My favorite memory was when my daughter Lulu and my first husband, John Cale of The Velvet Underground, presented me with an invented CFDA award called The Tiniest Talent," she said Monday night, with Lulu standing right beside her. Johnson also talked about the ceremony where she met Yves Saint Laurent and why the CFDA Fashion Awards could use more comedy.
This year was Michael Bastian's sixth time being nominated for a CFDA's Menswear Designer of the Year Award — and while he didn't win (this year's honor went to Thom Browne), he said just getting the nod from his peers is an incredible feeling. "It never gets old, and you never stop getting nervous, and I'm a hot mess at the moment," he said standing next to his label's public relations director, Eugenia Gonzalez, just moments before going into the ceremony.
Greta Gerwig really loves Scott Sternberg's label Band of Outsiders. "I used to go to Barneys just to touch their clothes, and I was so excited when they wanted me to do the Polaroid Campaign," she said at last night's CFDA Awards. Naturally, she attended the ceremony with Sternberg and wore a white jumpsuit that he made to look like a tuxedo for the occasion. And while she doesn't have any other fashion projects coming down the pipeline (other than trying to "look good every day"), she was happy to talk about her latest movie, Frances Ha.
Fashion designers can be a tough crowd to please, but Kate Spade creative director Deborah Lloyd said she hopes the CFDA Awards get a bit more humorous in the future. "I loved [Seth Meyers wearing the] Marc Jacobs outfit from last year," she said of last year's host, who parodied Marc Jacobs by wearing the same sheer lace dress that the designer wore to the Met Gala. "That really made me laugh, and I thought he was such a sport about that, so I hope there’s a little bit more humor. Because we are a hard crowd to please, so a few laughs will be great."
For stylist Brad Goreski's part, the highlight of the night was Linda Evangelista. "She's presenting Tim Blanks with his award and she’s the be all and end all for me. I'm a child of the '90s."
Joan Smalls doesn't just work with Riccardo Tisci — she calls him family. Last night at the CFDA Awards, Smalls — who wore a dress from Tisci's yet-to-be-unveiled Resort 2014 collection last night — said she was there to support the designer as he won the International Award for his work at Givenchy. Smalls also talked about her love for Linda Evangelista and attending the awards with Michael Kors last year.
What's it like being a well-known fashion designer? At last night's CFDA Awards, Michael Kors said he likes the "nice notoriety" of his fame, and said he was thankful he doesn't have to deal with paparazzi. He and his date, supermodel Karolina Kurkova, also shared what they plan on doing — and not doing — over the Summer.
Stars celebrated the world of fashion in NYC last night at the 2013 CFDA Awards in Lincoln Center. The event honors top fashion designers, and stylish stars like Kerry Washington and Jessica Chastain joined the party on the arms of celebrated designers. Being that this was a style event, there were plenty of supermodels at the bash, including Victoria's Secret stars Adriana Lima, Candice Swanepoel, and Karlie Kloss. Hillary Clinton also joined the bash to present the Founders Award to Oscar de la Renta, the man behind many of the former secretary of state's famous pantsuits. She joked about her sense of style during her speech, saying, "Now that I have some more time on my hands I am going to be pitching Andy Cohen and others a new show for Bravo. . . . We can call it Project Pantsuit." She also noted that she was embarrassed when she first met Oscar and he told her that she was wearing one of his designs.
Of course, there were a few stars in attendance who had a closer connection to the CFDA Awards other than just being fans of fashion. Tobey Maguire turned out to support his wife, jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer, who was nominated for the Swarovski Award for emerging talent for accessory design. Mary-Kate Olsen also attended the event after scooping up the highly coveted womenswear award with her sister Ashley back in 2012. Just as actors and actresses have the Oscars and Golden Globes, fashion designers have the CFDA Fashion Awards. And as you might imagine, it's one of the most stylish events around. Celebrities and designers alike converge to celebrate those who conceptualize and set the trends. From Jessica Chastain's punchy lip color to Vera Wang's ultralong, ultrastraight strands, see who dazzled on the red carpet for the 2013 show.
There's no denying that the unofficial honorees of the CFDA Awards are the ones who come arm in arm with the designers. Whether it's a relationship based on loyalty and friendship (looking at you, Karlie Kloss and the ladies of Cushnie et Ochs) or one that gives way to jaw-dropping jewels (Sofia Vergara in Lorraine Schwartz, anyone?), or just best friends at it again (Alexander Wang and Erin Wasson), date night rarely looks this chic.
A closer look at all the designers with their dates, here in the gallery.
We've said it before and we'll say it again: no one throws a party like the fashion industry. After last night's CFDA Awards, the industry gathered at a collection of afterparties that brought together designers, models, and celebrities alike.
Swarovski hosted an official afterparty at the Top of The Standard at New York's Standard hotel, where nearly everyone who walked the red carpet was spotted. Karlie Kloss blew kisses at the camera, while Prabal Gurung simply smooched his date, Candice Swanepoel, on the cheek.
Vera Wang celebrated her Lifetime Achievement Award with her own party, where she spent time with old friends like Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, and Anna Wintour. And Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci celebrated his International Award with his friend Carine Roitfeld — who stars in and styled his latest campaign — along with Jessica Chastain, Kate Upton, and Kate Foley. A look at all those pictures and more, straight ahead.
