2011 Fall Milan Fashion Week: Dsquared2

A wild, wild Western-meets-Victorian world was the name of the game at Dsquared2.
Fall 2011 Milan Fashion Week: Dsquared2

A wild, wild Western-meets-Victorian world was the name of the game at Dsquared2. Fantastical and whimsical with full-length fur and leather, the Fall '11 looks take the most wearable of fabrics — leather, denim, plaid — and deliver theatrics in the form of Western-styled head-to-toe looks. No look was complete without a wide-brimmed hat or pair of gloves, a fur collar, or a leather accoutrement. But for all its showmanship, there are the trends we'd wear — the cool-girl pieces in leather and fitted knits and denim, then the accessories, like studded belts and lace-up boots. It's confident and tough, so badass we actually suspect the ladies catwalking might be toting real pistols in those holsters.

  • Trends: Western, fur, leather, denim, hats.
  • Colors: Black, burgundy, plaid.
  • Key Looks: Full-length leather skirt and denim jacket topped with a wide-brim fedora and fur collar; a full-length body-con gray skirt and bow-tie.
  • Accessories: Wide-brim hats, leather gloves, lace-up platform boots on blades, belts with holsters.
  • Who Would Wear It: Erin Wasson and other confident, sexy tomboys with a thing for Western flavor.

Rodarte Sport? Fashion and the Olympics Collide

There are two marathons coming up: New York Fashion Week and the Olympics.

There are two marathons coming up: New York Fashion Week and the Olympics. I don't know if you know this about me, but I have a sporty side and I get a bit Olympic obsessed. And I'm not the only fashion/sport hybrid. Ralph Lauren, Rodarte, and Dsquared are also gearing up for the games. First up, Ralph Lauren, who designed Team USA's opening ceremony navy puffer jackets, white pants, and cute Fair Isle knit hats. We will see these pieces — from the Polo Ralph Lauren Olympic collection — on the 150 athletes representing the US.
In The New York Times Magazine this Sunday, witness a Ryan McGinley portfolio, featuring 13 Olympians training in custom-made Rodarte knit garments. Here is figure skater Johnny Weir, mid-axel, in a full crochet knit jumpsuit — whoa. Other Olympians in the story include figure skaters Evan Lysacek, Rachael Flatt, and pair Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker; freestyle skiers Jeret "Speedy" Peterson, Hannah Kearney, and Emily Cook; snowboarders Hannah Teter and Kelly Clark; and ski jumper Anders Johnson.

DSquared Channels Young Hollywood For Fall

Based on the runway makeup from their Fall/Winter 2009 runway show, twins Dan and Dean Caten of DSquared looked to the deliberately undone appearance of young Hollywood stars like Lindsay Lohan and the Olsen sisters for inspiration.

Based on the runway makeup from their Fall/Winter 2009 runway show, twins Dan and Dean Caten of DSquared looked to the deliberately undone appearance of young Hollywood stars like Lindsay Lohan and the Olsen sisters for inspiration. "It's kind of 'rock-on' makeup, but it's effortless and not overly done or perfect," said Dean. Known for a humorous approach to fashion, like their recent take on glamping, DSquared has been partnering up with MAC since their first show 12 seasons ago. This time around, the MAC DSquared Fall/Winter Collection is edgy, purposefully disheveled, and not meant to be taken too seriously — or as MAC says, it's Ziegfeld Follies by way of Grey Gardens with a little Girl, Interrupted. Did you catch all that? It's all about a dark, glistening eye with a neutral face and nude lips.

    Layering Bodysuits

We've been fans of the bodysuit for as long as we can remember, from our middle school days shopping at The Limited to now.

We've been fans of the bodysuit for as long as we can remember, from our middle school days shopping at The Limited to now. The great thing about this basic is that you can find it in just about any weight and sleeve length, and, at all different price points. Start your outfit off with one of these bodysuits and start layering--in the winter, it might not get too much visibility but at least you'll know that your outfit looks good from the inside out. Plus, our studies show that men love them. You know, just saying.

These pieces might not satisfy the conventional notion of what 'Staying In' clothing looks like; but who said you had to wear pajamas at home. In fact, these pieces are as comfortable as they are street-ready. Victoria Bartlett, Rick Owens, and Alexander Wang all know a thing or two about clothing that looks high fashion and feels like a worn-in dream. In this economy, it's best to double up on your motivations.
