Christian Lacroix to Design For Schiaparelli

At long last, we know which designer will guide Schiaparelli back into the marketplace: Christian Lacroix.

Lacroix will design a 15-piece collection for the house that's set to debut in July. This capsule is the first of what the house is calling a "long series of artist contributions," implying that other designers will create similar collections in the future. But in a statement, Schiaparelli made it clear that it "will also develop collections by the future artistic director of the Schiaparelli maison." Recent rumors have pointed to Marco Zanini of Rochas as a possibility for that position, but who will actually get it remains to be seen.

For now, Lacroix — who showed his final couture collection in 2009 — said he wanted to "reposition Elsa at the center of her maison and on the stage from which she once seduced the world." The collection itself, according to the brand, will "pay homage to the Schiap legend by interpreting her iconic creations while perpetuating her timeless image."

Schiaparelli to Relaunch in February 2013

Tod's owner Diego Della Valle is taking advantage of the new attention directed at Schiaparelli by bringing the long-dormant brand back to the market early next year.

Tod's owner Diego Della Valle is taking advantage of the new attention directed at Schiaparelli by bringing the long-dormant brand back to the market early next year.

Della Valle plans to hire a designer by September and aims to have accessories, fragrances, cosmetics, and some clothes in stores by next February. He's hired actress Farida Khelfa to be the face of the brand — her first assignment is attending this evening's Met Gala in vintage Schiaparelli — and will set up shop at 21 Place Vendôme in Paris, the same address at which Elsa Schiaparelli opened her first boutique.

"The idea with Schiaparelli is to propose the brand with all its modernity, and represent dreams, art and all the most sophisticated things we can do," Della Valle told WWD.

Della Valle has reopened old fashion brands before: in 2002, he brought the shoe label Roger Vivier back to life.

Schiaparelli is one half of the focus of this year's Costume Institute exhibit, Impossible Conversations: Schiaparelli and Prada. The exhibit will be open to the public from May 10 to Aug. 19.

Inside the Costume Institute's Schiaparelli and Prada Exhibit

Let's talk about fashion: that's the premise of this year's Costume Institute exhibit, titled Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.

Through a series of videos directed by Baz Luhrmann, the exhibit — which was inspired by a series of Vanity Fair articles from the '30s — imagines Miuccia Prada and the late Elsa Schiaparelli (played by Australian actress Judy Davis) discussing their respective approaches to dressing women. Against this backdrop are clothing and accessories from each designer, arranged almost as if in conversation, too: In one gallery called "Waist Up, Waist Down," Prada's skirts are shown next to Schiaparelli's jackets. "To me the waist up is more spiritual, more intellectual, while the waist down is more basic, more grounded," Prada says in the coordinating video. "It's about sex. It's about making love. It's about life. It's about giving birth."

Other conversations include themes like "Hard Chic," which looks at the influence of menswear and military uniforms, and "The Surreal Body," which examines pieces like Schiaparelli's famous lobster dress and Prada's Fall 2011 skirts and shirts that are covered in large sequins resembling fish scales.

Prada told The New York Times that while she's never directly been inspired by Schiaparelli, she now understands "there actually were some similarities. But it is other people's vision."

Fashion's biggest names will get a first look at the exhibit tonight during the Met Gala, and the exhibit itself will open to the public on May 10 and close Aug. 19. For now, a sneak peek at the exhibit in the gallery.

Theyskens' Theory is known for cool, downtown looks, and the inspiration behind the Fall 2012 collection is unexpected... it's Grandma. Effortless hair floated down the runway thanks to a clever hair trick, and the makeup palette included warm bronze shades, taken from someone Granny might look to for beauty inspiration: the late Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli. Miuccia Prada Is Not Thrilled About Her Upcoming Met Exhibit

>> Miuccia Prada doesn't agree with the way the Costume Institute is comparing her with Elsa Schiaparelli in its upcoming exhibit.

>> Miuccia Prada doesn't agree with the way the Costume Institute is comparing her with Elsa Schiaparelli in its upcoming exhibit. "It's too formal; they are focused on similarities, comparing feather with feather, ethnic with ethnic, but they are not taking into consideration that we are talking about two different eras, and that [Schiaparelli and I] are total opposite," Prada said backstage at her menswear show this past weekend in Milan. "I told them, but they don't care." The exhibit, entitled Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: On Fashion, opens May 10 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

2012 Costume Institute Gala and Exhibit to Focus on Miuccia Prada, Elsa Schiaparelli

>> As rumored, the 2012 Costume Institute Gala and exhibit will focus on Italian designers Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada.

Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: On Fashion will run May 10 to Aug. 19, and will be underwritten by Amazon alongside Conde Nast. Serving as honorary chair at the May 7 gala is Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon, with Carey Mulligan, Miuccia Prada, and Anna Wintour as co-chairs. Baz Luhrmann will act as creative consultant to the exhibition, helping to oversee its design.

Curators Harold Koda and Andrew Bolton aim to examine the way Schiaparelli and Prada broke fashion convention and played with the ideas of good and bad taste as well as their affinity to the art world. “Once we got Schiaparelli as the core part of what we wanted to do, it became a logical jump to Miuccia,” Koda said. “They are both Italian women, and even though Miuccia might not describe herself as a feminist, what we see is these two very strong women with a very strong aesthetic.”

The exhibit is expected to feature about 80 designs by Schiaparelli from the late '20s through the early '50s and by Prada from the late '80s through present day, drawn primarily from The Costume Institute's collection and the Prada archive.

Parisian fashion designer of the 1920s and 1930s, Elsa Schiaparelli, was the first to use shoulder pads, animal prints (in 1947), and zippers dyed the same color as the fabric. But that's not why I look up to her. She was a daring character, never afraid to take risks: “I have never been shy of appearing in public in the most fantastic and personal get-up,” she wrote in Shocking Life, her autobiography. On the same note, she wasn't scared to design eccentric clothing for her clients. In 1931, she created a divided tennis skirt for a Wimbledon Championship player that shocked the tennis world. That was Elsa for you!

She is most known for spearheading the marriage of fashion and art. Most notably, she worked with artist Salvador Dalí to create art-inspired designs like a white dress with a gigantic lobster, taken from the artist's lobster telephone from 1936. Though I'm sad I never got a chance to meet Elsa — she died in 1973 at the age of 83 — her work and style will always be an inspiration.

Update: Olivier Theyskens was thought to maybe take over the helm but sources have confirmed this false. 2010 is the date we can expect to witness the revival.

Before you know it, we may have another storied fashion house back on our hands. The Italian business mogul Diego Della Valle, who also owns Tod's, bought the rights to Elsa Schiaparelli earlier this year.

Ever since, he's been on the hunt for a designer to bring the house, most famous for its 1937 surrealist lobster evening dress collaboration with Salvador Dali, back to its former glory. Talks with Roland Mouret fell through, but WWD is reporting that British designer Giles Deacon has risen to the top of the pile. Exciting!
