Stars Hit the Met in the Sultriest Black Sheer Gowns — Which Look Wins?

Thanks to their black, sheer, and lacy gowns, this style set may have just had some of the sultriest looks to hit the Met Gala staircase.

Thanks to their black, sheer, and lacy gowns, this style set may have just had some of the sultriest looks to hit the Met Gala staircase. Joan Smalls perfected her supermodel smolder in a body-conscious embroidered Tom Ford gown — proof that covered up doesn't have to be conservative. Alexa Chung embraced the Gala's subversive theme and channeled her sexier side with a sheer-inset Erdem look, as did Allison Williams, who delivered a more provocative look than we're used to, wearing a black Altuzarra gown. Adding to the list of attendees who ditched their usual "good girl" persona, Anne Hathaway showed off a dramatic vintage Valentino gown, made all the more striking with see-through fabric and a high-shine finish. Now it's time to weigh in — which of the starlets' sheer gowns gets your vote?

Erdem Fall 2013

He may be known for churning out ladylike collections fit for a princess, but don't be fooled.

He may be known for churning out ladylike collections fit for a princess, but don't be fooled. Just a few short years ago, Erdem Moralioglu's signature garden prints, delicate laces, and dreamy color palettes weren't always so pure and sweet. The darkly gorgeous Fall 2013 collection the designer presented in London Monday was a welcome reminder that the designer is still quite adept at mixing prettiness with edge.

Layers of black organza shrouded nearly every look, creating a veiled, surreal effect on paillette-covered dresses, tweed suits, and oversize coats. Silhouettes were as ladylike as ever — high necks, slims skirts — but thanks to seams that had been sliced away and replaced with sheer fabric, there was a newfound sexiness at play as well. As for the floral prints and romantic laces that have become Moralioglu's calling card? Those were plenty present too. They came in shades of lilac, midnight blue, citrine, and inky black, and were decorated with wispy ostrich feathers, matte sequins, and metallic thread — all of which was also veiled in layers of sheer black

Erdem Fall 2013 Runway

Unlike the usual pastel-bright ladylike fare we're used to, Erdem's Fall '13 collection showed off the designer's darker — sexier — side.

Unlike the usual pastel-bright ladylike fare we're used to, Erdem's Fall '13 collection showed off the designer's darker — sexier — side. And we couldn't have imagined a more beautiful kind of mood swing. Black prevailed as the collection's primary source of "color," with flashes of neon lavender, green, and blue to keep it from veering into all-out gothic territory. Let's call this a case of textural dark romance, built upon equal parts black lace, floating chiffon, and polka-dot details, with ostrich feathers punctuating the sheerest of layers. To add to the drama, day dresses were remade for evening, complete with Victorian-inspired collars and capes, while velvet floral appliqués stood in as a richer kind of embellishment. See how Erdem Moralioglu took his Fall '13 collection to the dark side, right this way.

Cate and Nicole Stun at the AACTA Awards — Who's Best Dressed?

Battle of the Aussies: Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman attended the AACTA Awards last night in Sydney, Australia, looking nothing short of stunning in their choice of statement dresses.

Battle of the Aussies: Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman attended the AACTA Awards last night in Sydney, Australia, looking nothing short of stunning in their choice of statement dresses. Always one to push the style envelope, Cate donned a fiery red sequined Armani Privé gown paired with black statement earrings and patent pumps. Quite a bold ensemble, especially compared to fellow Aussie Nicole Kidman, who opted to take the ladylike route in a strapless embroidered Erdem Spring '13 dress. The light yellow hue contrasted beautifully against her skin tone and we love that she accessorized her ensemble with a pair of decadent gold and blue earrings along with chic ankle-strap sandals. Which look are you leaning towards — Cate's bold fashion statement or Nicole's ladylike look?

Sienna Miller — channeling a little bit of her The Girl character, Tippi Hedren — donned a whimsical floral-embroidered Erdem cropped top and long skirt combo from the brand's Spring '13 collection. The straight neckline was a nod to mod, while a side slit revealed a pair of sky-high metallic sandals. The actress opted to keep the rest of her accessories to a bare minimum, just wearing three earrings on her left ear. Thoughts on Sienna's look tonight?

Erdem Pre-Fall 2013

Don't be fooled by the simple shapes in Erdem Moralioglu's Pre-Fall 2013 collection; the pieces in this offering are actually incredibly complex, thanks to the designer's masterful combinations of materials like PVC, leather, lace, and organza.

Moralioglu said he was inspired by the 1965 film Pleasures of the Flesh, which made him think about "mixing things that don't really go together, of things that are a little bit wrong." That manifested in a number of ways: a prim floral-printed silk was cut into a houndstooth pattern and then sewn onto a transparent raincoat, and huge multicolored paillettes that looked like fish scales were layered over another flowery dress. A closer look at a pair of what appeared to be lace trousers revealed that they're actually made from leather pretending to be broderie anglaise, and the yoke of one sweet-looking pink, yellow, and blue dress was made from clear PVC.

By applying new fabrication techniques to classic shapes, Moralioglu freed himself up for a little exploration while ensuring that these clothes will make sense to customers when they hit the selling floor. And what's more exciting than people actually wearing these rather experimental looks?
