Erin Fetherston on Her Engagement Ring and Designing Her Own Wedding Dress

After deciding not to show this season in order to prepare for her upcoming wedding, Erin Fetherston told People on Thursday that she and her longtime boyfriend Gabe Saporta have actually been engaged since New Year's Eve.

After deciding not to show this season in order to prepare for her upcoming wedding, Erin Fetherston told People on Thursday that she and her longtime boyfriend Gabe Saporta have actually been engaged since New Year's Eve.

Saporta popped the question with a Lorraine Schwartz ring that Fetherston helped design. The emerald-cut diamond is set on a platinum band that was "oxidized to give the ring a vintage feeling," Fetherston said. "I love it because it's luminous and romantic with the right amount of edge."

The couple hasn't set a date yet, but Fetherston already knows where she's going to get her wedding gown.

"I will definitely design my own dress," she said, "and my fairy-tale aesthetic will undoubtedly influence the look and feel of the wedding."

Erin Fetherston Pre-Fall 2013

For Erin Fetherston, Pre-Fall dressing means making the most of the balmy days at the end of Summer.

For Erin Fetherston, Pre-Fall dressing means making the most of the balmy days at the end of Summer. In her latest offering, a recent trip to Los Roques — a group of islands off the coast of Venezuela — informed the tropical color palette and the use of pattern. For example, one multicolored print depicting a stylized ecosystem of people, trees, homes, and butterflies got cut into a sleeveless shirt and a dress.

Of course, shoppers can always expect fun dresses from Fetherston, and this offering doesn't disappoint on that front. A sparkly, strapless pink-and-gold pleated number was eye-catching and fun, but some of the other evening pieces (one combined a black bodice with a gold-spangled skirt covered by a layer of organza) were a little more grown-up. The few separates, like a pair of slim trousers and a sleeveless black peplum top, preserved that sense of polish.

It's party time for Erin by Erin Fetherston's Spring 2013 collection, which was presented in New York's chic-magnet hotel, The Standard. Emphasis was on the cocktail attire, with flirty, dance-floor-ready dresses making up the bulk of the collection, plus one standout metallic shorts suit. Fetherston hit all the classic party notes: there were metallic jacquard, feathers, paillettes, chiffon, and jeweled embellishment. Colors ranged from sunset oranges to soft neon yellow to her trademark pink. The models milled about on a breezy outdoor terrace as guests drank Champagne before everyone was ushered into a balloon-filled room for what was ostensibly the "real party." It was clear Fetherston intended to drive the "good times" message home. With a buzzing crowd that included Padma Lakshmi, she seemed to have kicked off Fashion Week on a high note.

  • Trends: Feathers, metallic jacquard, sunset hues.
  • Colors: Sunset hues, soft neon, pink.
  • Key Piece: A pink minidress with a feathered skirt; a metallic jacquard shorts suit.
  • Accessories: A glass of Champagne and a ping-pong paddle — classic Erin Fetherston!
  • Who Should Wear It: Hot young starlets who are on the nighttime scene, like Nikki Reed and Ashley Madekwe.

Erin by Erin Fetherston Spring 2013 Runway

For Spring 2013, Erin Fetherston said she was inspired by a photograph of Brigitte Bardot lounging in canary yellow ostrich feathers. "I loved seeing her as a little French songbird — wild and sultry, with an air of unfussed glamour. I wanted to capture that spirit in my collection this season," she said. Accordingly, the designer tasked her models with playing ping-pong and languishing on patio furniture on a balcony at New York's Standard hotel and employed her own songbird — singer Alexandra McDermott — for entertainment. Many short dresses and full gowns faded from neon yellow or neon orange to white. One sweet sleeveless dress was kissed with a lipstick print, while other garments in blush tones and black-and-white were accented with ostrich feathers, paillettes, and a beaded zebra-print pattern. For an extra measure of "femininity with an edge," Fetherston ended the collection with several pieces in a cheetah print that incorporates the big cat's face.

Colorful party dresses that sparkle with vim and optimism were the bulk — and, in fact, almost the entirety — of Erin Fetherston's Resort 2013 collection. The plentiful frocks came in bright hues of turquoise, orange, and pink, and a few were decorated with oversized bows. There were a few separates in neutral colors — a white jacket and gray cardigan, for example — and lace dresses in black, white, and navy looked especially demure next to their shimmery cousins. While a few short dresses had front panels liberally sprinkled with sequins, an excellent pink number was covered with them from neckline to hem.
