How To: Give Your Sofa a Winter-Friendly Makeover

Tired sofas — we've all had them.

Tired sofas — we've all had them. Before you give up on the one you've been glaring at all year, try taking a stab at re-styling it with Winter-friendly layers — lots of them. We'll show you how!

  • Start by tucking a folded quilt into the center sofa cushions to provide subtle pattern and texture. To avoid an overly crafts-y look, shop for block-printed options, which feel particularly fresh.
  • Faux-fur pillows provide softness and warmth and are great for curling up with. For something slightly more unexpected, try mixing two different colors of fur. As long as they coordinate with the rest of your accessories, the result will look cohesive.
  • For a pop of color and a touch of whimsy, throw a pom-pom throw over the arm of your sofa.
  • Finish the look by adding a plush shag or flokati rug to accompany the touchable fabrics. A graphic version can still work well with a patterned quilt as long as the color palettes match. This crisscross fleece version is an especially good buy!

Unabashedly Over-the-Top Romantic Decadence From the New Shakespeare Film Anonymous

Opening Oct. 28, Anonymous posits the question, "Was Shakespeare a fraud?"

Opening Oct. 28, Anonymous posits the question, "Was Shakespeare a fraud?" The theory has been raised many times throughout literary history, and the upcoming drama directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Rhys Ifans and Vanessa Redgrave is only the latest.

While Anonymous may not answer any definitive questions about Shakespeare's identity, it does address the luxurious look of Queen Elizabeth's castle, seen in the photo below. The look may be a bit over the top, but when you're lazing with your lover in Elizabethan England, a warm fire and furs are sure to warm up the nippy air in the drafty castle.

Want to get the look at home? Start with some luxe-looking furs — cruelty free, of course — with the Austin Horn Collection
Faux-Fur Throw
($550). The soft faux-fur throw is crafted in the style of clean-edge French mink and finished with handmade fur pom-pom tassels. Made of cotton and backed with silk, it won't shed.

To add some ambience, mix a historical chandelier with a modern one. Start with the traditional Bree Candelabra in Distressed Gold by Aidan Gray ($580), whose traditional materials will contrast beautifully with the modern lucite and artistic shape of the Boom Lucite Candelabra ($90).

Freaky or Fabulous? The Gorilla Arm Trend For Fall 2011

Fur, both real and faux, returned for Fall, and one of the most interesting incarnations of the furry stuff was the debut of the gorilla arm.

Fur, both real and faux, returned for Fall, and one of the most interesting incarnations of the furry stuff was the debut of the gorilla arm. By that, we mean the seriously, thickly fur-covered sleeves of coats. Rag & Bone showed it in their futuristic Scottish ski bum, Giles did it under a black corset, and Peter Som took it to the trench. It's certainly a bold look, but one that could be hard to pull off. What do you think of this trend? Would you wear it?

Look of the Day: You Stole My Heart

For a lesson in cozy-chic layering, I'm not looking any further than Fab reader a r i — she hit the streets in a to-die-for layered ensemble that I'm feeling compelled to copy.

For a lesson in cozy-chic layering, I'm not looking any further than Fab reader a r i — she hit the streets in a to-die-for layered ensemble that I'm feeling compelled to copy. She wore black leggings, an oversize striped sweater, and a faux-fur stole, then added a pair of studded open-toe heels with casual gray socks. Her gobs of jewelry and bright orange lipstick are the perfect touch. She totally stole my heart with this look, and I'm truly inspired!

Congrats to a r i!

Desire/Acquire: Faux Fur Throw

I bought a faux fur comforter from Pottery Barn about eight years ago — oh I am such a trendsetter! — and it's so gosh darn cozy.
Pottery Barn at ShopStyle

I bought a faux fur comforter from Pottery Barn about eight years ago — oh I am such a trendsetter! — and it's so gosh darn cozy. Even though in the wintertime, I tend to walk around my apartment wearing the thing like a robe and vehemently refuse to take it off, I am tempted to buy an additional faux fur throw for my living room. The smaller size seems more convenient, practical, and well, less embarrassing. That said, I'm not sure whether I want to shell out $99 for Pottery Barn's current Faux-Fur Throw. So I've been looking for a more affordable alternative, and whadya know? I found a much cheaper option! Want to see it?
