Patterned Bedding: Making It Work

I'm excited to present a story from one of my favorite sites, ShelterPop!

I'm excited to present a story from one of my favorite sites, ShelterPop!

In honor of the ultra-chic patterned bedding in the ShelterPop-curated Gilt sale, we're showing you how to create a room around eye-catching sheets and duvets.Patterned bedding is one of the easiest ways to create a personalized, fun bedroom. But what about the rest of the pieces in the room? Inspired by the dreamy, patterned bedding in our Gilt sale (where all the items in the above image are available!), we asked Sarasota, FL-based interior designer Lindsay Milner of A Design Story for some ideas on keeping a room from getting too overwhelming.

  • Keep the rest solid: "Don't let it all be patterned bedding — throw in some solid sheets and throw pillows to ground your comforter. This is an easy way to tone things down right away."
  • Consider an opposing pattern: "With patterned bedding, your bed becomes a focal point. So be cognizant of other patterns and colors you place around the room. If you have striped bedding, add in polka dots, flowers or other geometric patterns into the space. Better to be interesting than matchy-matchy."
  • Want more pattern? Keep it small: "Rugs and drapes should be neutral or in a delicate pattern."
  • Stay within the color family: "If you're going to add in other patterned items, see that they have similar colors, and focus on accessories like window shades, artwork and throw blankets."

As for those products above — you can find them at the ShelterPop-curated Gilt sale, which lasts from Wednesday, October 6 at noon to Saturday, October 9 at midnight.

Phoebe Philo Reportedly Among the Masses Gathered for Target's Light Show Spectacular

>> Last night saw crowds on New York's West Side craning their necks in awe while Target's twenty-minute-long Kaleidoscopic Fashion Spectacular took place.

>> Last night saw crowds on New York's West Side craning their necks in awe while Target's twenty-minute-long Kaleidoscopic Fashion Spectacular took place. The mass retailer rented out 155 rooms — the entire south side of the Standard Hotel — and took advantage of the building's floor-to-ceiling glass, illuminating the windows to reveal 66 dancers performing a choreographed dance. The light show and dance sequences portrayed everything from a growing green vine, to lightning and rain, to a tie-dyed rainbow of colors before finally ending to applause in a red Target bullseye.

Among the audience were Prabal Gurung, Richard Chai, Georgina Chapman, who is due with her first child any day now (and still plans to be at Fashion Week), and reportedly Phoebe Philo. Target is clearly working on upping its image — and last night's display seemed a success, based on the enthusiastic audience reaction. It's also partnering with Gilt Groupe for the first time, allowing its collaboration with Mulberry (see images here), which doesn't hit Target stores until Oct. 12, to be sold on Gilt tomorrow, Aug. 20, in limited quantities.

We've been anticipating William Rast's Target collaboration — and now, more details have emerged. The label's jeans and leather are making their way to Target stores Dec. 19. And while $50 for denim and $200 for leather jackets is a bit of a higher price tilt, it promises to deliver the authentic feel of William Rast, right down to the fabric and materials.

This Friday, Target and Gilt Groupe will kick off The Target Sale on Gilt, selling the retailer's designer collections on the sale site before they debut in stores. Tucker, Mulberry handbags, and John Derian's handmade decoupage designs for home will be sold online at Gilt. The sale will only last through the weekend, with quantities limited, so get up on it!

ABC Carpet and Home Reinterprets the Stars and Stripes

With Independence Day right around the corner, I have my eye out for festive red, white, and blue decorations.

With Independence Day right around the corner, I have my eye out for festive red, white, and blue decorations. But year-round, I'd prefer to put my patriotism on display in a more subtle fashion. As it turns out, I'm in luck! Textile emporium ABC Carpet and Home has commissioned a group of artisans from a remote mountain village in Turkey to create a limited-edition collection of one-of-a-kind rugs.

Made from multicolored recycled textile remnants with odd placements and numbers of stars and stripes, the designs reinterpret Old Glory in unconventional ways. The rugs are part of the ABC's "Project Americana," which works to preserve traditional arts. Through Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT, they'll be for sale exclusively on members-only site Gilt Home (free to join), ranging from $1,250 (3'11" x 5'9") to $2,995 (7'6" x 9'10"). If I had that kind of dough, this pink and green flag rug would definitely be mine! Check out the others below.

Gilt Groupe Grows Its Gorgeous Home Selection

Hooray! Gilt Groupe, the online mecca for deeply discounted luxury and fashion brands, announced today that it will expand its selection of home décor items.

Hooray! Gilt Groupe, the online mecca for deeply discounted luxury and fashion brands, announced today that it will expand its selection of home décor items. The retailer will now run about 15 sales a week from more than 200 brands, including indoor and outdoor furniture, rugs, lighting, decorative accessories, tabletop, bedding, and more. Some notable brands you'll see on Gilt will be Angela Adams, John Robshaw, Kim Seybert, Ligne Roset, and Missoni Home. They also plan to feature editorial and interviews with home and product designers.

"Our member is a sophisticated individual who looks for luxury in every aspect of his or her life, including their home," says Stefan Pepe, general manager of Gilt Home. "What we are doing now is offering that member a curated selection of products in a wide variety of categories for the home each day. Our goal is to give our members stylish products that can be used to furnish every room."I am definitely excited for this! Although, I fear for my wallet a bit. It sounds like the industry bigwigs are pumped, too: even Jonathan Adler chimed in saying, "I believe great style is universal: from your clothes to your curtains, personal style is expressed through all outlets, so it only makes sense that Gilt would further its presence in the Home category." Have you ever bought any home décor from Gilt Groupe?

If you are a fashion addict, then no doubt you are already a fan of Gilt Groupe, which sells designer duds at way cheaper prices through its two websites, Gilt and Gilt Fuse. Much like collective-buying sites, the sales last for a limited time. The savings are pretty amazing, and starting this Friday, Gilt will be running a fitness-themed sales event called Get Fit With Gilt.

Among other things, the sale will feature tracksuits from Y-3 Adidas, yoga wear from Be Present, Manduka mats, and shoes from New Balance. Besides clothing, Gilt will also offer discounted rates to Crunch, Pure Yoga in NYC, and race slots and all-inclusive packages to the Iron Girl Triathlon in Atlanta, Syracuse, and Lake Tahoe.

I know I sound a bit like a PR agent, but I'm a big fan of Gilt and saving money — especially when it comes to fitness. The most important thing to keep in mind is that the fitness items will go on sale Friday at 12 p.m. EDT and end on Sunday evening, and everything is on a first-come, first-served basis. Happy shopping!
