  • Former Vogue writer Joan Juliet Buck explains the circumstances of her glowing profile on Syrian first lady Asma al-Assad in the magazine's March 2011 issue — which was published in the midst of the Middle East's Arab Spring revolutions — in a new article. "There was no way of knowing that Assad, the meek ophthalmologist and computer-loving nerd, would kill more of his own people than his father had and torture tens of thousands more, many of them children," she writes. Jason Wu Affordable Line Miss Wu to Be Sold at Nordstrom

Jason Wu says he wanted to "explore the other side of myself" when he created Miss Wu, the lower-priced line he'll begin selling exclusively at Nordstrom in January.

"I always see Jason Wu [the collection] as my aesthetic, my design sensibility," Wu said. "Miss Wu is my personality. It was really fun to explore that facet of who I am — slightly more downtown, and with a more relaxed attitude."

The 40-piece collection features Wu's signature feminine, floral aesthetic with touches of inspiration from the '60s. Clothing will be priced from $195 for a sleeveless silk bow blouse to $795 for a black leather jacket. (A sleeveless blouse from Wu's main collection, by comparison, costs $565.)

Nordstrom will carry the line in 49 stores across the country and has exclusive rights to sell the brand for one year. After that, Wu plans to expand the line into a full wholesale operation and expand the brand's offerings. "The first two seasons are based solely on ready-to-wear," he said. "By 2014, we plan to have accessories."

Watch: The Making of Jason Wu's Resort 2013 Collection

In a world of endless shows, high-low collaborations, and nonstop Internet news, it can be easy to forgot some of the more beautiful aspects of the fashion industry.

In a world of endless shows, high-low collaborations, and nonstop Internet news, it can be easy to forgot some of the more beautiful aspects of the fashion industry. In fact, sometimes the things that make fashion so compelling are rarely considered for longer than a few moments at the end of each season's round of shows. That's why it's so lovely — and refreshing — to hear a designer speak as articulately about his design philosophy as Jason Wu does in this behind-the-scenes video created by Swarovski.

Languidly shot in Wu's studio and filled with candid moments — watch for a cameo from stylist Kate Young — the mini film explores the idea of craft and offers all sorts of insight into the making of Wu's bug-inspired Resort 2013 collection. "I always love the idea of storytelling and I think everything around the clothes has to contribute to that," the designer explains. "It's really about weaving the story and having it told through the clothes." We couldn't agree more.

Jason Wu's Resort 2013 collection was inspired by the work of artist Mike Libby, whose combination of watch parts with beetle and butterfly wings influenced Wu to examine the intersection of "nature versus man-made." The result lent itself well to Wu's customarily ladylike look, but with a twist. A sleeveless white shirt, for example, formed the bodice of a dress consumed by a floral-printed chiffon skirt. Also in the mix are clusters of custom-made Swarovski crystals embroidered onto tank tops, cocktail dresses, and handbags shaped like insect bodies.
