Raquel Zimmermann Does Masculin/Feminin for Jean Paul Gaultier's Fall 2009 Campaign

>> Placing a male and female model together against a gray studio background is quickly becoming a Jean Paul Gaultier campaign signature — it was that way with Daria Werbowy for Fall 2008, and an ankle-wrapped Lara Stone for Spring 2009; but for Fall 2009, the campaign's usual photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin played with the formula a little bit.

This upcoming month before all the Fashion Weeks get under way, she's planning to go to Vienna and then surfing in Hawaii.

Fall 2009 Couture Bits: Christian Lacroix Paid Models 50 Euros, Cathy Horyn Warns Valentino Might Give Wearers "A Rash"

Models fees are required in France, so Christian Lacroix chipped in to pay his 10 models 50 euros apiece.

  • Models fees are required in France, so Christian Lacroix chipped in to pay his 10 models 50 euros apiece. Normal couture fees are said to be around 1300 euros per show for new faces — every year of experience earns a "raise" of about 1000 more euros. [Imaginary Socialite]

  • Jean Paul Gaultier had a 12-lb dress, Chanel had three seamstresses working on the bride look, and Maison Martin Margiela used 2,000 pen caps for a jacket: it's Fall 2009 couture by the numbers. [The Cut]

  • Cathy Horyn yearns for Alessandra Facchinett's Valentino; Of Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli's couture, she says: "Frankly I’d be worried about getting too close to one of those prickly, encrusted numbers. You might get a rash." [On the Runway]

2009 Fall Couture: Jean Paul Gaultier

Judging from Jean Paul Gaultier's Fall couture creations, he didn't have a shortage of inspiration.

Judging from Jean Paul Gaultier's Fall couture creations, he didn't have a shortage of inspiration. The powerful warrior princess, the chic '20s flapper, the old-Hollywood actress, and the feisty futuristic goddess all had a place on the catwalk . . . and in JPG's eyes, they all prevail. Exquisite gowns set a glamorous tone: some with floor-length capes attached to them, some robe-like, and some chiffon with armor-like bodices. Fur played a big part — fur collars, coats, chubbies, and skirts made appearances. And what's luxury without beading? It showed up in the most unique ways, my favorite being the fine gold beaded overalls Kim Noorda rocked. Color didn't play a big part, but there were random bouts of rich purple, yellow, pink, and brown.

Jean Paul Gaultier Goes Old Hollywood for Fall 2009 Couture

>> Jean Paul Gaultier's Fall 2009 couture show was a spectacle — pre-show, Sasha Pivovarova sketched backstage, free Magnums and ice cream bars were handed out to help stifle the heat (Jean Paul even ate one as he took his bow).

>> Jean Paul Gaultier's Fall 2009 couture show was a spectacle — pre-show, Sasha Pivovarova sketched backstage, free Magnums and ice cream bars were handed out to help stifle the heat (Jean Paul even ate one as he took his bow).  But that was just the beginning: Mickey Rourke never even made it to his front row seat due to the paparazzi scrum, instead taking in the show from the fifth row.

Gaultier drew inspiration from Old Hollywood — the seating was divided into old movie studios; models — including Erin O'Connor — were made up as Joan Crawford, Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth, Catherine Deneuve, Greta Garbo; and the dresses were based on iconic movies like Barbarella, Belle de Jour, African Queen, Anna Karenina, and A Star is Born. For the finale, the bride appeared against a backdrop of famous Hollywood faces, with each one in turn projected onto her face.

Jean Paul Gaultier Opens His Couture House For Music Video

>> As a followup to the iconic commercial with Agyness Deyn for his Ma Dame fragrance, Jean Paul Gaultier got together with Parisian DJ and producer Martin Solveig — who he met at an exhibition last year — to make a music video for Solveig's song, "Boys & Girls."  The video, which features Solveig and Martina Sorbara from Canadian group Dragonette wearing the same outfit Agyness did, was filmed in Jean Paul Gaultier's couture house on rue Saint-Martin in Paris.

Fab Read: Maison Martin Margiela

After checking out Maison Martin Margiela ($63), by Martin Margiela, I found myself even more intrigued by the mysterious, elusive Belgian designer.

After checking out Maison Martin Margiela ($63), by Martin Margiela, I found myself even more intrigued by the mysterious, elusive Belgian designer. I admit, I was disappointed with the blank cover baring only the brand's tag and not Margiela's face, but the decadent fabric, inks, ribbons, and minibooklets inside make up for it. Not only is this book beautiful, it also offers insight into Margiela's secretive creative process along with exclusive essays about Margiela from fashion greats such as Vanessa Beecroft, Andreé Putman, and Jean Paul Gaultier. Scintillating, to say the least.

>> THE MODELIZER —Talk in the last week has centered on which model might be poised to give Raquel Zimmermann a run for a place on top of the heap — Lara Stone or Natasha Poly — but her Fall 2009 campaign run is shaping up well so far — she's shot Gucci and Jean Paul Gaultier, both with Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Giorgio Armani with Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, and Hermes with Eric Valli — all supposedly before she bleached her hair.  Speaking of the new hair, the first editorial with it on display appears in the July 2009 issue of Vogue Nippon, captured by Mert and Marcus (above).
