Victoria Beckham Shops in a White Collared Top and a Black Maxi Skirt

Leave it to Victoria Beckham to look insanely chic in black and white while on a shopping spree in Paris.

Leave it to Victoria Beckham to look insanely chic in black and white while on a shopping spree in Paris. The designer strutted her svelte stuff in a white Jil Sander collared blouse, which she tucked into a black column-style maxi skirt by Maison Martin Margiela ($875). Her accessories included a black Victoria Beckham satchel, which she held on to, her signature oversized square sunglasses, black platform suede Giuseppe Zanotti booties ($795), and a chunky rose-gold watch. While this outfit might be a bit too fancy for your next retail excursion, it would look appropriate for an important meeting at the office. Just pair Victoria's exact blouse, or any other crisp white top, with a black maxi skirt, and chic accessories. Looking luxe like Victoria, you'll surely have everyone's attention.

Designers including Diane von Furstenberg, Tory Burch, and Donna Karan attended the fete, alongside celebrities like Catherine Zeta-Jones, Dakota Fanning, and Helena Christensen. But the standout of the evening definitely goes to Leelee Sobieski, who took a risk in a white, minimalist floor-length gown from Jil Sander's Spring 2012 collection. She emulated the runway look, complementing the V-neck collared dress with a slicked-back hairstyle. This outfit is fit for a modern bride looking to try an off-the-rack find. What Will Raf Simons's Version of Dior Look Like?

>> Today is Raf Simons's first day of work as artistic director of Dior, and one of the first things he did was assure the world that his work there won't be primarily concerned with minimalism.

While Simons isn't revealing any hard and fast plans for the French fashion house yet, he says his point of view for Dior will skew more feminine and romantic that stark and simple — even if stark and simple is what he's been known for in the past.

"I don't think it's wrong to call me a minimalist. It's wrong to call me a minimalist only," he told WWD. "When I'm married to a house, I will fully embrace its original intention, its original heritage and meaning. I wouldn't go to that place if I only had minimalism in mind. I'm very aware of what the environment is about."

Look no further for proof of that than Simons's Fall 2012 collection for Jil Sander, where he had been creative director since 2005. Many saw the simple and elegant clothing he presented there as a sort of audition for his new role at Dior, as it echoed elements and sentiments of midcentury couture without imitating it outright.

Dior announced that it would hire Simons to replace John Galliano on Monday. Simons's first show for the house will be in July during Paris Fall 2012 Haute Couture Week.

Jil Sander on Her Impending Return, Suzy Menkes on the Current State of Fashion, and More

  • Jil Sander says she's very excited to be returning to her namesake label. "It feels very natural, even though it is like a miracle," the designer says. "At the moment, there seems to be a craving for authenticity and clear visions. I am confident that this is the time for modern sophistication, for attractive, wearable fashion which is true to the new century." The designer's first day back is tomorrow. [WWD]

  • Suzy Menkes (left) has spoken out about "the current state of fashion," saying that the recent brash of designer shakeups — which started last year with Galliano's ousting from Dior and has continued with Raf Simons's recent departure from Jil Sander — "leaves a queasy feeling." Menkes goes on to say: "this is not a game of chess . . . real people — especially sensitive designers — deserve not to be treated as pawns in someone else's game." She also mentions that Christopher Kane may be going to Dior. [New York Times]

    Jil Sander Fall 2012

    >> It's not every day that the finale of a fashion show is met with a tearful ovation or an audience that rushes the runway in unrestrained appreciation.

    >> It's not every day that the finale of a fashion show is met with a tearful ovation or an audience that rushes the runway in unrestrained appreciation. As Raf Simons gave his final bow at Jil Sander today, he was met with both.

It was "moving and spontaneous, and certainly not like anything I’ve experienced in 25 years of covering the industry," Cathy Horyn reported of the show's final moments. Federico Marchetti echoed the sentiment saying, "Raf was in tears at Jil Sander, the purest moment in fashion since I started in this industry."

Of course, it's not every day that a designer presents a collection so lovely, elegant, or quite so poignant. It is also not every day that a designer who's done such a remarkable job leaves a successful post to go off into the great unknown.

Regardless, it's true that wherever Simons goes he'll be just fine. Today's ice cream-hued swan song — which some say evoked a modern take on '50s Dior couture — was a triumph, not only in its breathtaking beauty, but in its optimism and promise as well.

    Jil Sander Runway Fall 2012

Raf Simons bowed out at Jil Sander with a soft pastel palette and minimalist silhouettes for Fall 2012. His finale — a modest showing of femininity in truly modern proportion — was met with a standing ovation. The trick was subtlety in both color play and the measure of each silhouette — colors were rich, but soft; cutouts were sexy, but never overt. There was grace and balance in every look. We're treated to evening wear in sporty-cum-sexy corsetted cocktail dresses, with a flash of patent that feels fresh and ladylike, never offensive; while tops are cut with lingerie-inspired, body-conscious detailing that's all at once provocative and elegant. The collection as a whole walks that line between innovation and restraint: a flash of metallics, an oversize powder pink coat. Each piece works in perfect balance delivering, above all, wearability. Jil Sander has some big shoes to fill when she returns to take the helm next season.

    • Trends: Minimalist, pastels, metallics, jumpsuits, corsetted bodices, cutouts.
    • Colors: Soft pink and blue, red, camel, nude, navy, white, and silver.
    • Key Piece: The cutout jumpsuit that's sophisticated and just sexy enough.
    • Accessories: Ankle-strap pointed-toe pumps, colored handheld clutch, and sophisticated leather satchels.
    • Who Would Wear It: Girls like Kate Bosworth, Zoe Saldana, Kerry Washington; the femme with modern edge.

Jil Sander to Return to Jil Sander

    >> The Jil Sander Group has confirmed that designer Jil Sander will return to her eponymous label.

    >> The Jil Sander Group has confirmed that designer Jil Sander will return to her eponymous label. "I am very happy and excited to be back. It feels like coming home after a brief journey," the designer — who founded the company in 1968 — said in a statement. "The fashion world needs original voices and genuine signatures. I will do my best to, once again, join the choir."
Sander's first collection will be the men's Spring 2012 collection shown in June.

The confirmation comes just one day after the company announced that the current creative director, Raf Simons, would leave his post following the presentation of the women's Fall 2012 collection this weekend in Milan.

This is not the first time Sander has returned to the company. After exiting in 2000, she returned to the creative helm in 2003, only to leave again a short time later. [WWD]

    Raf Simons Leaves Jil Sander

Update: The Jil Sander Group has just confirmed that the brand's founder, Jil Sander, is returning as its creative director. "I am very happy and excited to be back," said Sander. "It feels like coming home after a brief journey." This news comes just one day after announcing that Raf Simons will be leaving his post as creative director at Jil Sander.

After seven years as Jil Sander's creative director, Raf Simons will be showing his last collection for the brand this Saturday during Milan Fashion Week. The Jil Sander Group, who also said they will be announcing the new creative director in a few days, recently released a statement thanking Simons "for his dedicated commitment to the brand throughout these years, and wishes him the very best for the future”. The news comes after rumors that the brand's founder, Jil Sander, might be returning to the brand. Meanwhile, Simons was recently speculated to take the helm as creative director at Christian Dior. We're looking forward to his next project, but for now, take a look at the slideshow for a retrospective of Raf Simons's sporty-meets-sleek collections for Jil Sander over the years.
