Up Close and Personal With Prada's Costumes For Gatsby

The Great Gatsby might be opening in theaters today, but the costumes Miuccia Prada created for the movie have been on display at her downtown New York stores all week.

The Great Gatsby might be opening in theaters today, but the costumes Miuccia Prada created for the movie have been on display at her downtown New York stores all week.

Last Tuesday night, Prada transformed the steps of the store into an exhibition space displaying the costumes Prada made and customized with costume designer Catherine Martin.

The exhibit, Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby, features an array of women's gowns intricately decorated with crystals, feathers, fur, and embroidery. Prada told WWD her costumes for Daisy Buchanan, the story's female lead, "became about money, because [Luhrmann] wanted to show her as the most beautiful and rich woman on earth."

Prada added that she didn't have to adapt her work to a '20s aesthetic. "Yes, probably a few had that kind of edge, but almost none were meant to be the '20s when I did them," she said. "I was really fascinated by that."

The array of industry insiders and celebrities who attended the exhibit's launch seemed equally fascinated by the costumes. If you can't make it to the show in New York, which runs until May 12, you can see all the costumes here in the gallery.

Miuccia Prada pulled in the ultimate front row for Miu Miu Fall 2013: from stars like Renée Zellweger, January Jones, and Zoe Saldana to pals like Marc Jacobs, this was a crowd to be reckoned with. And they were rewarded with a cutting-edge but utterly wearable collection with an emphasis on elongated silhouettes in navy with pops of bright pink, yellow, and blue. Shoes with lug soles were paired with striped tights, while waists were nipped in on astrakhan and nylon coats. The effect was ladylike but off-kilter — just what her fans have come to love about Ms. Prada. Click through to see the full Miu Miu Fall 2013 collection.

Miu Miu Fall 2013 Runway

Miuccia Prada took Miu Miu in a new direction for Fall 2013, and this is one trip we'd like to tag along on.
Miu Miu Runway | Fashion Week Fall 2013 Photos

Miuccia Prada took Miu Miu in a new direction for Fall 2013, and this is one trip we'd like to tag along on. The emphasis was on skirts, dresses, and outerwear with a long, often lean silhouette. Zip-front knit dresses went past the knees, ending in surprise pops of pastel polka dots. Astrakhan coats were a standout, including a belted one in navy. While the clothing had a sporty, feminine quality, Miu Miu shoes grounded the looks with thick curved heels, lug soles, and colorblocked metallic details. The brand's beloved bags ranged from structured doctor bags in bright pastels to a bucket bag that may indeed be the world's chicest luggage. Adriana Lima Goes to the Dark Side at Prada's Fall '13 Show

Miuccia Prada went down a darker path for Prada's Fall '13 collection, presenting slouchy, relaxed silhouettes in a staid palette.

Miuccia Prada went down a darker path for Prada's Fall '13 collection, presenting slouchy, relaxed silhouettes in a staid palette. From off-the-shoulder dresses to haphazardly styled knits to bold asymmetrical leather skirts, the clothing was cool (and very wearable) — the kind of lineup that makes you wish for cold weather. And to top it all off, Adriana Lima — who's one of the faces of the Miu Miu Spring '13 campaign — hit the runway, wet, slicked hair and all. Watch the complete collection, and spot Adriana if you can!

Prada Fall 2013 Runway

Miuccia Prada went down a darker avenue for Prada's Fall 2013 collection, showcasing asymmetrical skirts, off-the-shoulder dresses layered with haphazard knit tops, and structured coats displaying luxurious fur details. The mood was ladylike (and much more wearable compared to her Spring '13 collection), with an undone twist as models walked down the runway with wet, slicked hair, donning leather skirts with slouchy sweaters and gorgeous fur coats, some of which were paired with thick-soled loafers or metallic ankle strap platform sandals. Checkered coats were casually worn off the shoulders, and the same styling effect was used with most of Prada's stunning striped tweed dresses and easy knit tops. But it wasn't all about this careless attitude; the designer also offered up a range of perfectly tailored skirtsuits made out of jewel-toned tweeds and featuring nipped-in waistlines with bold leather belts to temper her effortlessly chic vibe.

Miu Miu brings its Spring 2013 campaign to life with a series of videos, each of which stars a different model. Martha Hunt, Arizona Muse, Tamara Weijenberg, Malgosia Bela, Doutzen Kroes, Adriana Lima, and Bette Franke each take turns capturing the brooding, mischievous, and almost sinister undertones of Miu Miu's print campaign — and each leave the viewer wondering if perhaps there isn't something more to the brand's Spring 2013 collection than just the gorgeous clothing. Don't Mess With the Women of Prada's Spring 2013 Video

Turns out those flowers in Prada's Spring 2013 collection weren't just for decoration.

Turns out those flowers in Prada's Spring 2013 collection weren't just for decoration. The narrative of the brand's newest campaign video treats the blooms like beautiful, powerful women that shouldn't be messed with.

The short film, called Ten Women, stars a full bouquet of models including Eva Herzigova, Irene Hiemstra, Irina Kravchenko, Kirsten Owen, Maartje Verhoef, Raquel Zimmermann, Sasha Pivovarova, Saskia de Brauw, Sung Hee Kim, and Vanessa Axente. Each of the women poses languidly for the camera while a voice-over describes attributes of some of the flowers. "Tiger lily," it says as Kravchenko stares directly into the camera. "Handle with care."

Steven Meisel directed the video, which is set to musician Moondog's "Stamping Ground." The song's militant drum line ads a quickening sense of purpose to a video that's feminist, unsettling, and beautiful to look at all at once.

The Jewels From Miu Miu Offer Serious Sparkle

If there's one item sure to punch up festive holiday attire, it's a decadent piece of costume jewelry.
Miu Miu The Jewels Collection Pictures

If there's one item sure to punch up festive holiday attire, it's a decadent piece of costume jewelry. Miu Miu's new cocktail baubles, appropriately and simply called The Jewels, turn the volume up on festive sparkle by layering gold-colored hardware with Swarovski crystals, Plexiglas, enamel, and pearls together — sometimes all in the same piece. But the real beauty of this collection is that its optimistic color palette and floral elements mean it'll still look fresh when Spring rolls around.
