Trend Alert: Nautical Shoes The nautical trend is never far away, seeming to re-emerge every season. For Spring 2009 it's taking on footwear with casual espadrilles, striped flats, and funky heels.
When Rubin Singer did a full on nautical collection in New York for his Spring 2009 show we admit we thought it was a little too much cruise collection not quite enough spring/summer. But after seeing D&G's delightful diffusion line take on naughty and gnarly nautical we might have to soften the stance on cruise as summer collection attire. Who are we to stand on ceremony, cruise is just summer in a different hemisphere anyway right?
While it may homogenize merchandising a bit we were tickled by stripes (a trend report of ours in New York) on everything from dresses and capris to full on bathing robes. Add to that a few jaunty little high waisted trousers (who cares if its been done to death already?) and some pert camisoles and we might just convince ourselves that we need to get on the Dolce and Gabanna yacht.
Sailor pants are such fun. They're a quick and casual way to look nautical and fresh and what's not to love about those adorable buttons? These J Brand Shoreman Sailor Pant ($217) are adorable but ahoy mate expensive! Let's see if we can find the look on the cheap . . .

A pair of perfect navy blue sailor pants miraculously made their way into my life recently and have inspired me to bring out my inner sailor-ette, full force. The nautical trend has long been a part of fashion history — hello, Jean Paul Gaultier — but these perfect pants make me want to come sail away, and Shopbop's nautical selection is allowing me to do just that. Won't you join me on my proverbial ship by incorporating anchors, stripes (a la 3.1 Phillip Lim's resort line, left), and brass buttons into your closet? Is that an "aye aye Fab" I hear?!

A SeasteadAs summer approaches the fashionable mind often strays style cliché of nautical dressing. And even though one might be tempted to ignore it as a tedious summer staple, it is possible to find in it fresh and exciting possibilities. Members of our community like Temptalia and ShinyGloss are eagerly awaiting MAC Cosmetics Naughty Nauticals collection. But we found ourselves distracted by a far stranger possible trend. Blame it on our obsession with Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash and its floating trash heap city, but we are obsessed with the idea of Seasteading. Economics blog Marginal Revolution got us all excited about the idea of escaping nation states by living on the high seas.
We think this will appeal tax shelter millionaires which means that "cruise" season could take on a whole new meaning for fashion. We imagine girls in Chloe Nautical sweater dresses and golden sandals forever adrift sartorially. We bet Karl Lagerfeld would be the first designer to show a cruise collection on a seastead. He may be showing Chanel's Cruise 2008 collection in Miami in a few weeks but we think it would be so much cooler on a floating city of billionaires. OK so technically a seastead is more like an oil rig made out as a house but we still think its devastatingly romantic and just a bit neurotic in the most fashionable way.
This way cute Free People tank top reminds me of sunny days to come. The colorful array of stripes are adorable and the flare at the bottom is precious. And isn't it sort of Jonathan Sauders-esque?
