We spoke with the designer at her Spring 2013 presentation, where she revealed her "rule of thumb" for wearing the exotic pattern, her '50s throwback inspiration (think American Dream), and what it feels like to have an arsenal of celeb fans. We always expect a quirky cool collection from Marc by Marc Jacobs, and for Spring '13, the Marc girl was all wrapped up (and layered) in cute colors and prints. Evoking a well-traveled glow, models marched down the runway in an array of bright head wraps, multicolored quilted cotton dresses, and baggy striped pants. The results? J.Crew's evolution from a classically minded brand to a trendsetting label in its own right has grown steadily with Jenna Lyons at the helm. This season, the label continued its reimagining of preppy staples, like slim trousers finished in embroidery and print, or a sweet crewneck that gets an allover floral print — or maybe just a cheeky word or two printed across the chest. Natural surroundings served as the inspiration for Donna Karan, but what resulted for Spring 2013 was an ethereal lineup of draped, light-as-air dresses. Finished in sea-inspired hues, like pale blues and aqua greens (one cutout sheath actually resembling a sea creature unto itself) and earthier neutrals, Karan's collection seemed to float effortlessly down the runway. The 3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2013 collection was a veritable mixed bag.
