Trend Breakdown: How Sofia Coppola Gets Tomboy So Right

Last night at the Meek's Cutoff screening, Sofia Coppola eschewed the traditional dress and went for a boyish look that was ultra chic, effortless, and perfect for her. How did she get it so right? Fab breaks it down:

  • The Tailored Coat: Sofia goes for a sleek, menswear-inspired coat tailored for her small frame.
  • The Perfectly Cuffed Pant: These Stella McCartney wool pants are a little bit slouchy and cropped to show a bit of ankle and all of her lovely, feminine shoes.
  • The Schoolboy Shirt and Sweater: Her Peter Pan-collar blouse peeks out from under a slightly oversize gray sweater, giving her a preppy coolness.
  • The Accessories: Here's where she indulges her feminine side: each wrist boasts a bedazzled bangle, she carries a chic quilted clutch, and her delicate Mary Janes nicely balance the boyish silhouette.

An Outfit On Our Current Shopping List

We're going to have something of an indulgent moment here and tell you all about our personal shopping habits-we have you in mind, though, don't worry.

We're going to have something of an indulgent moment here and tell you all about our personal shopping habits-we have you in mind, though, don't worry. First off, it's mostly online (save for sample sales and the occasional girls day out) and it's mostly through Shopstyle; a sister website to ours that acts as an aggregate, among other things, for hundreds of e-commerce sites. When we see a shoe here, a blouse there, we add it to our stylebook on shopstyle or to a folder in our bookmarks bar and have a think. On our current list? Mociun's amazing high waist fake batik print jeans, the highest of high platforms by Dolce Vita (we won't be wearing these every day so we think it's best to stay at a lower price point), and a quirky orange zip-back sweater from Topshop. As an outfit, we think it would be pretty killer, even if the onslaught of orange still scares us a bit.

    Vacation

    Thirty Minute Getaway

Sometimes you just haven't the time for a full weekend away.

Sometimes you just haven't the time for a full weekend away. On those weekends, sitting in the park, or on the deck, roof, or stoop can feel like a mini-vacation. This outfit is inspired by those mini-breaks that make a busy weekend bearable. The real key piece here is the Secrets Of Charm linen dress. A khaki colored dress without much shape can be styled in so many different ways, we think it's a wise thing to invest in. Starting with that, a pair of day heels will make you feel put together without killing your feet. These Rachel Comey Gatsby sandals bring some life to the outfit, keep your feet cool, and are easy to walk in. From there it's all about the extras. Where a no-frills bikini under your dress (you never know when you'll run into a slip and slide) that will look super chic with those shoes should you have to jump up at a moments notice. Finally, some colorful, breezy earrings, a sun hat, and a large structured bag will seal the deal. Inside the bag you'll be able to fit your book and that stack of Thank You cards you've been meaning to send out. A well-planned outfit that looks like a vacation, is the only thing a girl can do when she can't get away. Gals, at least we have that.

    Working Girl

Giorgio Armani's haute couture show had us dreaming of suiting for Fall.

Giorgio Armani's haute couture show had us dreaming of suiting for Fall. Between the reemergence of blazers, the passing of couturier Yves Saint Laurent, and a slew of runway shows (YSL the most striking and skilled among them) that played up power-separates, we're pretty sure that our fall wardrobe will pivot on lean slacks, silk blouses, and heels that cost more money than the two combined. If this is possible, it would mean a Martha Stewart-worthy upheaval of our wardrobe. There's nothing like a slick Fall uniform to make you want to donate your peripheral duds. To that end, here are the beginnings of a great fall wardrobe, inspired by Armani, YSL, and the suiting trends we've seen thus far. Pick up the sale items other chicsters were too overheated to imagine wearing, and you'll be thankful when the weather turns. Or, you could be as type-A as us and make a list of the basics you want to replenish for Fall. Our method for pairing down our wardrobe when the season's change is a massive reorganization and a one item-in, one item-out editing system. When you're replacing a Forever 21 romper with an Alexander Wang boyfriend blazer, or a pair of painful vintage heels with a pair of Louboutins, you'll feel, well, deserving of a power suit.

    Friday's Outfit And Video Indulgence

On a beautiful Friday afternoon, there are only two things a girl should be doing.

On a beautiful Friday afternoon, there are only two things a girl should be doing. Okay, perhaps that's a bit intense. Ahem. On a Friday afternoon, we can see how someone might enjoy themselves if they were...

    A. Listening to the song you'll find below.
    B. Wearing the outfit, inspired by the song, you'll find below.

In our opinion that's what summer Friday's are for: taking what you do and making it enjoyable for no other reason that you'll be damned if you have to stay at work and not at least enjoy yourself a little bit. Below, the outfit inspired by The Greatest Band Of All Time, is a mix of 'high' and 'low' fashion. On the low end, there's a 38 dollar American Apparel copper swimsuit (we love swimwear as street wear) and beaded Target necklace for 14.99. And on the high end, the Mayle Sun Bag, clocking in at just over $600. The other two pieces, decidedly mid-range, though with big names to back them up, are the ivory Chloe sandals, on sale for $258, and the MM6 by Martin Margiela jersery shorts for about the same price.

Kingdom Of Style Shoutout: Absolutely Fabulous

Our English network partner, Kingdom Of Style, has called on Absolutely Fabulous for a dose of nostalgia.

Our English network partner, Kingdom Of Style, has called on Absolutely Fabulous for a dose of nostalgia. Yesterday, Catwalk Queen brought us an outfit inspired by Sweet Valley High, and today, we've put together some Absolutely Fabulous looks to get us through this rainy Tuesday (well, at least in New York and London). Both cult classics feature looks that would embarrass even the most liberal fashionistas. We've taken the high road so that in case you want to relive the Patsy and Edina narrative, you need not also be the laughingstock of the high street. For an Ab Fab video clip and more, be sure to check out Kingdom Of Style's nostalgic post.

Outfit: Fish Camp For City Dwellers

Our original Coutorture editorial of the Trovata Fall 08 collection has made us want to head upstate to go camping.

Our original Coutorture editorial of the Trovata Fall 08 collection has made us want to head upstate to go camping. This outfit, inspired by Rocio Romero's Fish Camp, is a compromise between a New Yorker's style sensibility and a prefab camping trip. Just for the record, we don't find it strange whatsoever to be in the middle of the woods wearing Oscar de la Renta heels. You could absolutely cook up a tagine, read a book, or wave to your friends who are running around in Teva's, while relaxing on the porch of this little place. Fish Camp, a prefab that measures 312 square feet, might be small to some, but to a city dweller, it's a fine amount of space for a simple retreat.
