Bernard Arnault Has Not Yet Forgiven John Galliano

>> It's sounding more and more like Bernard Arnault's long-held strategy of hiring enfant terrible designers to reinvigorate luxury brands (John Galliano at Dior, Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen at Givenchy) will not be employed for his new Dior hire, whoever that may be.

Arnault has seen the even-tempered — even shy — Phobe Philo create triple-digit growth at Celine, and believes that it has the potential to be the next major brand. “It will take time, but [Celine] is on the way,” he tells Robin Givhan in Newsweek. “Phoebe has the potential. She is doing a style which is completely in line with our time.” Plus, he notes: “My daughter Delphine, she’s working at Dior, but she wears Celine.”

There's also the bad taste that Galliano seems to have left in Arnault's mouth. “I’m surprised that I did not get a call or a word of excuse from him,” he said not long after Galliano was fired. “After all that I did for him?” And he still hasn't been able to bring himself to forgive Galliano: “Not yet."

Although Arnault says he has no plans to make Dior into a minimalist label in the way of Celine, he does suggest it's time for a change at the house. Givhan writes: "[It's] time to recast his global, glittering, status-laden empire as something else. The watchwords are: intimate, Old World, artful. And the timing feels right."

As Dior chief executive Sidney Toledano points out: “A lot of schools produce designers, but the technical people — this is what we have to protect. They work very hard here, and they live outside of Paris. They are not living like the designer. They are simple people. Some of them have a difficult life. They have their feet on the ground." Ultimately, he says, "They’re sustaining the house."

Arnault agrees, saying of the current Dior situation: “I think we have the equivalent of the Vienna Philharmonic. From time to time, the Vienna Philharmonic could play without a conductor because they are so good. But that cannot last forever. We want to [make] the best choice for the house and find the best conductor.”

But, star designers can come and go. “A good product,” Arnault says, “can last forever.”

Tilda Swinton Works With a Creative Director for Her Red Carpet Looks Instead of a Stylist

>> Tilda Swinton has played muse for Viktor & Rolf and Haider Ackermann — she met both, as well as Alber Elbaz, Stefano Pilati, Phoebe Philo, and Raf Simons (who designed her wardrobe for the 2010 film I Am Love) — through her close friend Jerry Stafford, the creative director of a French production company, who she works with in place of a stylist.

“He’s my playmate,” she says. “It’s a game, and we have great fun with it.”

Swinton cites David Bowie and her father, Major General Sir John Swinton, as her style icons, and says of working with friends on what she wears for the red carpet: “For someone to know what you need to make you comfortable, they need to know who you are. Having them make clothes for me is like being cooked for by someone who knows what you like to eat.”

For the one-sleeve black Lanvin sheath she wore to the 2008 Oscars, for instance, she told Elbaz she wanted “to attract as little attention as possible and to feel as comfortable as if I were wearing pajamas. Little did I know that the really simple, chic dress one might have worn in Paris or Berlin would stick out like a sore thumb in Los Angeles.”

Stafford also creative directed Swinton's cover story for the August 2011 issue of W (left) — together they created a mood board for the shoot.

No E-commerce Yet for Celine, But a Manhattan Flagship in the Works

>> Phoebe Philo has been producing collections at Celine just short of two years now, and the label has leaped 20 or 30 places in overall editorial-credit rankings, entering the top 10 or 15 in most major markets, according to the label's CEO Marco Gobbetti.

Sales are on the rise, as well. Dresses have been the best category for Spring, while coats and jackets land at the top of the stack for Fall collections. And three bag lines Philo introduced with her first collection — the Classic, the Luggage, and the Cabas — are major hits for the brand; Gobetti calls them “pillars” of Celine's leather-goods business.

Although Celine was reportedly loss-making last year, Gobetti projects “very high double-digit” increase in growth worldwide for 2011. “I think everyone sees a significant potential for this brand.” Revenues this year have rebounded to historic highs approaching 200 million euros (approx. $289 million), and Gobetti says the label has the “potential to fairly quickly become a midsize brand,” with revenues in the 500 million euro range ($723 million).

To help make that happen, Celine is currently prepping two flagships — one in Manhattan at 870 Madison Avenue and one at 24 Rue François 1er in Paris — to open this Fall. But as for e-commerce, Gobetti says: “We will continue to study Celine’s e-commerce potential, and one day we will do it."

Adding some punch to her minimal aesthetic, Philo devised eye-catching looks like a structured coat made of iridescent PVC and a leopard print jacket made out of calfskin. Patchwork patterns of raw denim and Harris and Shetland tweeds create what she calls a "modern urban camouflage"; there's a new top handle handbag — the Triptych — with three zipper compartments; and the much-wanted clog sandals are back, in new colors and with velcro closures.

Jumpsuits: The Trend Is Here to Stay

When jumpsuits reemerged a few years ago, we all wondered if the trend had legs (no pun intended). The song Dancing Queen kept popping into our head each time we looked at one. Then stylish ladies like Gwyneth, Rachel Zoe, and Kate Bosworth were spotted in them. Most recently, one of fashion's most respected designers, Phoebe Philo of Celine, rocked one at the British Fashion Awards, and we fell in love with all the jumpsuits on the Spring '11 runways. Jumpsuits can be totally sexy when you wear it right: not too tight, minimal accessories. Here, a look at some of our favorites.
