Hey! I'm Liz (from It's Great To Be Home) and I did it, y'all: I pimped my piping. Remember this guy that looked so very sad? Well, now he’s had a makeover and he’s ready to strut his stuff. For only about $4, here’s how I gave this chair a major makeover:

1. Pick your victim. In my case, this slipcovered Ikea Ektorp armchair was the obvious choice; the all-white slipcover was pretty blah, and the oversized/overstuffed nature of the chair made it look like a big marshmallow.  Bottom line: you’ll get the biggest impact with a piece of upholstery that has piping and could benefit from a little definition. (Of course, this same technique could be used to add pizzazz to just about anything you want to tackle.) Continue reading to see the rest of the steps.

The first whiff of warm weather has everyone in a tizzy — even Kate Moss! The Super was spotted in Paris looking colorfully chic in a nautical-inspired ensemble. I love how she ditched her per-usual black separates for a striped top and red jacket complete with posh piping. This slick trimming can be found almost everywhere via skirts, pants, jackets, dresses, shorts, and bags. Like Kate, I prefer my piping up top. The navy trim on her punchy jacket provides the ultimate eye-catching contrast.

Photographer Todd Selby recently toured the NYC apartment of music label director Keith Abrahamsson and stylist Kate Young, which is simply too cool for school. Under a backdrop of warm grays, the digs have plenty of high-quality furniture with interesting shapes and artsy elements, but the thing I love the most is that each room has something subtle and creative to notice.

In the bathroom, I thought the couple was so clever to wrap an ugly pipe with rope (or twine) to lend it a more organic, less industrial look. Especially in cities, many of us are plagued with old piping and other things we'd like to hide. So it could be a useful trick for many of you. The material is really versatile and can work with different aesthetics; you needn't just have a nautical theme. What do you think?
