I've never seen such a thing in San Francisco: When we left the book signing of The Sartorialist by Scott Schuman at the Paul Smith store last night, the line to get in was down the block and around the corner. It's safe to say the street-style photog is a star. Book in hand, we approached the dapper Scott, who's completely handsome and respectable in person. He signed away, we chic chatted.
So why did he pick Julie, the New Yorker, for the cover? He explained how every time he posts Julie's picture on The Sartorialist, people comment about how perfect she is, so chic, so modern. But what they don't know is that she's less perfect than most because one leg is slightly shorter than the other. She's not traditionally perfect, but she knows how to work her imperfections and has a great pose. Selecting her for the cover had a deeper meaning than just someone who looked great.

>> Style.com Moves On From The Sartorialist with Jak & Jil's Tommy Ton —Earlier in the week, we questioned the whereabouts of Scott "The Sartorialist" Schuman's Fashion Week blog of Style.com, which he's done for the last six seasons, but now we have our answer: Jak & Jil's Tommy Ton has taken over duties this season. His first installment from New York Fashion Week went up today, and he's supposed to be in London — which Schuman usually skips — now. [Style.com, Jak & Jil, Styledotcom Twitter]
>> The Sartorialist No Longer Fashion Week Blogging for Style.com? —Style.com rolled out a Twitter aggregator of fashion notables, "The Fashion Feed," to amp up it's Fashion Week coverage, but one of its other usual Fashion Week staples seems to have fallen by the wayside. Scott "The Sartorialist" Schuman, who contributed to a special Fashion Week version of his blog on Style.com for the past six seasons up until last March, doesn't seem to be updating this time around, even though he's been out and about shooting at shows.

>> Scott "The Sartorialist" Schuman, whose first book came out last week, is about to add another Vogue edition to his resume: Vogue Italia. Schuman has photographed for Vogue Paris in the past — Carine Roitfeld is a fan — and seems to have won over Franca Sozzani: he recently shot Rachel Rutt for Vogue Italia.
His girlfriend and fellow streetstyle photographer Garance Dore has also been amping up her reach: this Fall, she will have more frequent contributions on Vogue Paris's website and perhaps in the magazine, focusing on the magazine's "Une fille, un style" ("A girl, a style") column, plus "behind-the-scenes coverage of fashion shoots, profiles of stylish women around the world in collaboration with French Vogue editor in chief Carine Roitfeld and other subjects of her choosing."
And last week, Patrick Robinson announced that Garance would be collaborating with Gap on an exhibit in their London pop-up next month, with her sketches (like the one above, left) on T-shirts.
I can seriously blow hours perusing The Sartorialist. So many people, so many fresh outfits. Snapping unique ensembles and fabulous people has become Scott Schuman's forte, so naturally, the next step is penning his own book. The Sartorialist ($17) is a compilation of his favorite shots from around the world spanning oceans and continents. "During all the fashion weeks I am approached by many photographers, Scott is the only one who can ask me to cross the street for better light and I do it," said Carine Roitfeld. "I love his portraits." I second that motion.

>> Scott "The Sartoralist" Schuman has been racking up gigs — an ad campaign for Australia's SABA Denim, teaming with Adidas, not to mention that impending book — which he says "make it possible for me to go to fashion weeks in Milan, Paris, London, New York, Stockholm, Australia — but also to places like Peru, Laos, Tibet." But Schuman, who made a stop in Toronto last Wednesday before an undisclosed "commercial gig" for Burberry on Thursday, had some other wisdom to share with Canada's Globe and Mail.
It's all about the brand.
"When I had my showroom in New York, that's what I was telling guys like Peter Som and James Coviello: 'You have to build your brand' – and they didn't listen. I started The Sartorialist in 2005. By late 2006, I had a serious brand. A brand that meant something."
And his girlfriend, Garance Dore.
"I'm pretty good at the sex. And pretty good at picture taking. That's about it. Garance is pretty happy. And the hotel-room neighbours are pretty pissed. You can write that; that's totally fine with me."
>> The Sartorialist Book Out in Less Than a Month —Refinery29 created a handy dandy flow chart that made the rounds last week on how to get photographed by Scott "The Sartorialist" Schuman, but for those who have already been captured, you might have made it into the eponymous book Schuman has been working on since January, which is out Aug. 12 in two different versions — limited-edition bespoke or paperback, the latter featuring CITY fashion director Julie Ragolia on the cover. Mario Testino raves: "More people notice me in The Sartorialist column than in any other publication or website. Obviously the place to be seen!” [The Sartorialist]
