Nicolas Ghesquiere, Sick of Clone Models, Cast Gisele, Carolyn Murphy, and Pregnant Miranda Kerr for Balenciaga Spring 2011

Spring 2011 Paris Fashion Week: Balenciaga

>> Nicolas Ghesquiere's Spring 2011 model cast grabbed as much attention — if not more — than the clothes; and it seems that he devoted just as much time curating his model troupe as designing this season.

In June, the Balenciaga team started a street casting tour: in London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Belgium, and Australia, eventually turning up seven girls — Ghesquiere called them "characters" — a dancer, an artist . . . all willing to have their hair bleached or dyed black and cut into a punky crop specifically for the show. Alongside those girls — among them was Alexander Wang opener Britt Maren — the cast included a parade of notables: Stella Tennant, Amber Valletta, Carolyn Murphy, a pregnant Miranda Kerr, with Gisele Bündchen closing. "I was sick of the clone-model thing," the designer offered as explanation, adding: "It's about individuality."

The show also explored “bringing out the man that is in every woman,” according to the designer, who sourced the collection's houndstooth pattern from a 1965 Cristobal Balenciaga silk column dress. Also featured: in his first time since joining Balenciaga, Ghesquiere did flats, creeper-style.

See the Model-Packed Fashion's Night Out PSA

>> Last year's Fashion's Night Out public service announcement featured designers and models, but this year's features the latter exclusively: 14 models, (including Karlie Kloss, Caroline Trentini, Doutzen Kroes, Liya Kebede, Karolina Kurkova, Lara Stone, Miranda Kerr, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Joan Smalls, Chanel Iman, Stella Tennant, Lily Donaldson, Sasha Pivovarova, and Jourdan Dunn) filmed by Peter Lindbergh for two days all around New York City.

“This year, it was really about fashion hitting the streets,” Trey Laird, who developed the segment, told WWD. “It was important that all of New York City was represented.” Thus, filming locations included PS 1 in Long Island City, the Bronx Zoo, Central Park, and Lincoln Center. Tabitha Simmons styled the shoot (behind the scenes images here), and the resulting 30-, 15-, and 10-second spots launch on television, in taxi cabs, and online today. From Sept. 3 to 10, they will be shown nine times an hour on the Toshiba screen in Times Square.

Fab Ad: Balenciaga Goes Intense, Fall '10

While the Spring '10 Balenciaga ads were trippy, Fall's are super intense.

While the Spring '10 Balenciaga ads were trippy, Fall's are super intense. They all feature the same format — single shot on the right, group shot to the left — but each has its appeal. I'm most excited to see '90s Brit model Stella Tennant (far right), who joins the gang, including Freja Beha Erichsen, Karen Elson, Caroline Brasch-Nielsen, Stella Meghan Collison, Mirte Maas, Valerija Kelava, and Kirsi Pyrhonen. The dusk-like background and the models' solemn expressions make for one seriously stoic ad campaign. Do you approve?

Freja Beha Erichsen Caps Off Fall 2010 Campaign Sweep with Balenciaga

>> Freja Beha Erichsen hasn't been far from the top for a number of seasons now, but it really is "The Summer of Freja," as The Cut put it.

>> Freja Beha Erichsen hasn't been far from the top for a number of seasons now, but it really is "The Summer of Freja," as The Cut put it. She's scored Vogue Paris, Vogue UK, and i-D covers in the last couple of months, plus made a clean sweep of the Fall 2010 campaign game, appearing in Chanel, Valentino, and Tom Ford eyewear ads. Add to that the new Balenciaga campaign, just out (below), where she appears alongside Karen Elson (also fronting Louis Vuitton this season) and Stella Tennant (who is moonlighting for Salvatore Ferragamo Fall 2010 as well), Meghan Collison, Eliza Cummings, Valerija Kelava, Mirte Maas, and Julija Stepanoviciute, all shot by Steven Meisel.

It seems that she's ready to start logging time on sets again: earlier this month, she was reportedly photographed for a September 2010 Vogue story that will also feature Stella Tennant and Liya Kebede, and today she was on set shooting a beauty story for i-D's Fall 2010 issue (left). Marc Jacobs Sings Backup for Donna Summer, Talks Hair Transplant at Louis Vuitton Store Opening

>> Marc Jacobs has taken the stage for many a reason in the past — usually it involves accepting an award — but last night, it was to sing backup to Donna Summer at the opening of Louis Vuitton's new store on Bond Street in London.

>> Marc Jacobs has taken the stage for many a reason in the past — usually it involves accepting an award — but last night, it was to sing backup to Donna Summer at the opening of Louis Vuitton's new store on Bond Street in London. “It was fun — but I think I’ll stick to my day job,” he quipped.

Jacobs celebrated with the likes of Stella Tennant, Bernard Arnault, Carine Roitfeld, and Natalia Vodianova, and opened up about his recent hair transplant, which had him avoiding press and cameras at the Costume Institute Gala earlier this month. "I was starting to thin on top. I can’t dye it for a while, so this is my natural colour.”

He also hinted that the Louis Vuitton logo that he has helped make so ubiquitous almost got squelched way back when he first started at the brand: "When I arrived at Louis Vuitton 12 years ago, and I was figuring out how to create a new tier of Vuitton for a different customer, I thought it would be clever to hide that monogram, which was very stupid of me. That logo is part of what makes the Vuitton so desirable. It allows people to become members of an aspirational club."

Logos are to be expected, but not Louis Vuitton couture — Jacobs says he has no desire to launch such a collection. “Some of what we already do at ready-to-wear is pretty much at couture level, anyway."

"Home Bird" Christopher Bailey Wants You To Call It Burberry Check, Not Burberry Plaid

>> Christopher Bailey likes to think of himself as a "home bird": he's at ease mulching — "the smell of manure makes me happy" — barbecuing, or watching TV with "soup on my lap," he tells the New Yorker in their September 14 Style Issue.

>> Christopher Bailey likes to think of himself as a "home bird": he's at ease mulching — "the smell of manure makes me happy" — barbecuing, or watching TV with "soup on my lap," he tells the New Yorker in their September 14 Style Issue.  But he's also the creative director of three-billion-dollar company Burberry.

Bailey is anti-elitist, the New Yorker writes.  He "came from a working-class background in Yorkshire" — his father was a carpenter, his mother dressed windows for Marks & Spencer — and one of his main goals for Burberry is to be "friendly and warm and embracing." He continues: "I think there's an expectation that all fashion companies have to be cold and austere and arrogant, and I just think there are other ways of doing things."

Isabella Blow Gets Two Biographies in 2010

>> Isabella Blow, discoverer of Stella Tennant, Sophie Dahl, Hussein Chalayan, Philip Treacy, Alexander McQueen — and muse to the latter two — passed away at 48 a little over two years ago after ingesting weedkiller.

>> Isabella Blow, discoverer of Stella Tennant, Sophie Dahl, Hussein Chalayan, Philip Treacy, Alexander McQueen — and muse to the latter two — passed away at 48 a little over two years ago after ingesting weedkiller.  The motive was suspected to be a recent ovarian cancer diagnosis; Blow had a history of at least two suicide attempts, one involving her throwing herself from the elevated Hammersmith Flyover road in London.

Needless to say, there's a story to be told, and two different biographies, both scheduled for 2010, are in the works, reports the New York Observer. The first, Blow by Blow: The Story of Isabella Blow, is co-written by Isabella's husband of 18 years, Detmar Blow, and author Tom Sykes, who first met Isabella when he was 20 and his sister Plum Sykes was her assistant at Vogue.
