Your Favorite Grocery Store of 2010

We know every tasty meal starts with its ingredients, so we wanted to know: where did you get yours this year?

We know every tasty meal starts with its ingredients, so we wanted to know: where did you get yours this year? With 34 percent of your votes, one grocer came out on top! Congrats Trader Joe's, our 2010 readers' choice for best grocery store.

We can't get enough of TJ's, and apparently great minds think alike — you also crowned the affordable grocer top pick in 2007 and 2008. This year the store adopted sustainable seafood standards, and it was our go-to spot for everything from cheese to chips to Sauvignon Blanc. Whether you're a fan of the store's self-branded goodies (like my personal faves the Thai Vegetable Gyoza and the Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches) or you like to stock up on two-buck Chuck, TJ's carries a unique selection of foods that's easy on the wallet.

Let's also raise a glass of Chuck to Whole Foods, who came in second with 26 percent of the votes. And be sure to check out all our other Best of 2010 polls and winners as we close out another delicious year.

We wanted to know which kitchen store had you drooling over pots and pans, mixers and measuring cups, and one store clearly came out on top. You chose Williams-Sonoma as your fave one-stop-shop for all things kitchen! In addition to carrying food prep supplies and edible offerings, the chain provides us with seasonal recipes like lamb chops with mint-pistachio pesto and happy hour cocktails like this gin and lemon concoction. What's Your Favorite Grocery Store of 2010?

What has been your go-to grocer this year?

What has been your go-to grocer this year? While supermarkets may be shooting for Santa's "nice" list in 2010, with Walmart going local with its produce, Trader Joe's adopting sustainable seafood standards, and Target putting the kibosh on farmed salmon, you may have preferred a small-scale shop or farmers market over super stores and warehouses. Or maybe it just came down to convenience? I live a few blocks away from a Whole Foods, so it usually wins out for me. But I'm wondering, where did you shop this year?

Target Takes a Stand Against Farmed Salmon

At the beginning of the month, I swore that the sustainable seafood trend would explode in 2010.

At the beginning of the month, I swore that the sustainable seafood trend would explode in 2010. Now it's already going mainstream. Earlier this week, Target announced its plan to stop selling farmed salmon in all of its stores.

The policy, which is part of an effort to make more ocean-sustainable choices, will encompass all fresh, frozen, and smoked seafood offerings, including Target's private labels Archer Farms and Market Pantry and national brands. The company will also stop selling sushi made with farmed salmon by the end of the year.

The eco-conscious decision by Target, a corporation that operates 1,744 stores in 49 states, will undoubtedly send ripples throughout the food retail industry. I'm thrilled Target has gone to such great lengths to take a stance on fish farming practices, and I hope other stores like Costco and Walmart will follow suit. Are you surprised to hear about the company's decision?

Shop Spotlight: Portland's The Hip Hound

While my lil guy was off having a blast, I couldn't get him off my mind!

While my lil guy was off having a blast, I couldn't get him off my mind! So, when I was doing some shopping in Portland over the weekend, I was delighted to spot this sign.I totally fell for the puppy dog eyes and followed the arrow to an absolutely adoro shop! The Hip Hound stocks the cutest stuff for your pets from a kitty corner for the felines to a clothesline of gear for your pooches. The first thing that I noticed was the super selection of outdoorsy gear . . . I guess Oregon has some sporty pups who need things like hiking backpacks and life jackets for their own summertime fun.

I know if I called that place my home, I'd need to get North started on a super new cardio routine pronto 'cause he's got enough trouble with the hills of SF. Either way, I picked him up a special pressie right up his city life alley – stay tuned for a slideshow of my own doggie model later today! – 'til then, check out some shots of the store below.

North Rocks His LA Doggie Styles

My time in LA would not be complete without a fab party, yummy cupcakes .

My time in LA would not be complete without a fab party, yummy cupcakes . . . and pressies for North! My fave store I visited was Beverly Hills' Doggie Styles – not only was everyone super friendly (including the in-store Frenchie and Boxer) but they had some super-cute pet gear to boot. Now it's much chillier up in the Bay than in SoCal so when I saw this black velour hoodie ($39), I couldn't resist bringing it home for North's nighttime walks. See a couple more shots of North (even with the hood up!) when you read more
