Better Aged: Why We Love the Vintage Tee

There's a special place in our closets for our t-shirt collection, right next to our favorite Louboutins and vintage Chanel finds.

There's a special place in our closets for our t-shirt collection, right next to our favorite Louboutins and vintage Chanel finds. Holding sentimental and style value, our vintage tees get better with age, and they fit perfectly. Did you throw yours out during Spring cleaning? We've got the tips — and a few picks — to help you find the one.

  • Don't underestimate your go-to stores like Urban Outfitters and American Apparel. These retail chain stores also carry their own one-of-a-kind vintage lines.
  • Do try your local Goodwill, and be sure to hit the kids' and mens' sections. You'll have to do some digging, but the results could be huge pay off at a super low cost.
  • Do hunt for the perfect tee on eBay. eBay's loaded with authentic, vintage t-shirts, with rare tees going for premium prices. eBay stores like WyCo Vintage and Stormcrow-Vintage are stocked with an impressive variety of amazing band tees for around $50 and up.
  • Other great sites to check out: Wolfgang's Vault has a selection of vintage and retro tees shoppable by artist; while Slingshot Shirts carries a budget-friendly selection of new tees with vintage prints.

Startup Apparel T-shirts: Totally Geeky or Geek Chic?

Since Sugar HQ is based in San Francisco, we're in an area of the country where start-up culture is rampant.

Since Sugar HQ is based in San Francisco, we're in an area of the country where start-up culture is rampant. It seems every week we hear about a new company, often being started by the creators of an old company. Fittingly, a new t-shirt line is taking advantage of the start-up culture with its line of appropriately-themed duds.

Startup Apparel features t-shirts with messages like, "It's all about the #startup life," and, "Will work for equity." As a SF resident and Internet-culture enthusiast, I like these shirts! Do they resonate with you?

Bloomingdale's Goes Geek With Star Wars

It's not everyday that you willingly drop $42 on a tee (or maybe you do), but I can tell you that my guy would happily hand over the cash to get his hands on one of these new Bloomingdale's Star Wars-branded tees, scarves, ties, and tote bags in honor of the 30th anniversary of Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

Guess Who Designed This Alligator Chair and T-Shirt?

A pair of brothers, known for their furniture designs made of unconventional materials, designed this Alligator Chair in 2004.

A pair of brothers, known for their furniture designs made of unconventional materials, designed this Alligator Chair in 2004. It must have made a good impression on Lacoste, because the brand commissioned the duo, the world's most famous Brazilian designers, to create this limited edition t-shirt. It's embroidered with vines of the iconic Lacoste alligator and inspired by the vines that grow in trees in Brazilian rain forests. The t-shirt sells for $1,900 and benefits a women's cooperative called Coopa-Roca in Brazil. Can you name the designers who designed both this alligator chair and t-shirt? (Just name their last name.)

Etsy Find: Recycled T-Shirt Rug

Looking for an eco-friendly alternative to a fluffy shag rug?

Looking for an eco-friendly alternative to a fluffy shag rug? Then try this Recycled T-Shirt Rug ($48) from Etsy seller Talkingsquid. I love the deep navy blue hue of this particular area rug, but if blue's not your bag, Talkingsquid makes these rugs in a variety of colors and sizes. Constructed from discarded t-shirts, Talkingsquid hand cuts t-shirt strips and sews them onto a durable cotton jersey t-shirt base. You can handwash the smaller size rugs on the delicate cycle, but larger rugs (such as the five by eight foot size), should ideally be dry cleaned, given their size.

Dressed for Arrest, Eh?

I'm sure no one wakes up and decides what to wear thinking they're going to get thrown in the slammer later that day.

I'm sure no one wakes up and decides what to wear thinking they're going to get thrown in the slammer later that day. Most people dress to impress or dress for success, but dress for arrest? Not so much. All of these fools unintentionally picked out the perfect tee to wear for their mug shots later that day. It's an ironic twist of fate that the gramps with "I am the law!" scrawled across his chest ended up behind bars, thanks to the law. I hear "the law" is really cracking down on identity theft these days. For more unintentionally hilarious mug shots, visit Fun Zombie.
