Happy National Tartan Day!

Happy National Tartan Day!
Graham & Brown at ShopStyle

Happy National Tartan Day! Today more than 11 million Americans with Scottish and Scotch-Irish roots celebrate their heritage with events happening all over the country. One foolproof way to join in on the festivity is to pile on the plaid. Of course, a kilt is a festive route, but there's plenty of tartan home decor to get your hands on too!

One of my favorites is the Graham and Brown Audrey Wallpaper ($85) designed by Marcel Wanders. If you're looking for less of a commitment, the Tartan Plaid Napkin Rings ($12) would be a traditional touch for a Scottish party or the Ralph Lauren Wool Tartan Throw ($180) is a cozy item you can use when you're taking it easy.

Do you have any tartan in your home already? Are you celebrating by wearing plaid today?

Lady tartan is looking incredibly snazzy in her poncho. I love the rich red and black colors, and those caged platforms do their part in injecting sexy roughness. Can't you just see Gwen Stefani loving this outfit?

Congrats to Twinklydust!

Capsule Trade Show: Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair Fall 2009

One of the reasons we dragged our boots through the snow earlier this week to see the Fall 09 stalls at the Capsule trade show, was that we knew Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair would be in attendance. The Fall 09 men's and women's ranges were one of our first stops at the show and boy, they did not disappoint. For gals, think draped tartan blouses and frocks and super thin, utilitarian separates and for guys; collarless dress shirts in pale salmon and knit suit jackets with matching shorts. Needless to say, it was all we could to do to kindly step away from the rolling racks.

Style Bandit is looking like a bird straight out of London. She's rockin' tartan plaid like a fashion pro. Smart lady for tempering the loud print with a black blazer and studded booties. Bold yet simple. Me likey.

Here's what she has on:

  • Dress: Vintage
  • Shoes: Colin Stuart

Congrats to Style Bandit!

Fab Read: Tartan, Romancing the Plaid

Talking about fashion and not mentioning tartan is like talking about fine dining and not bringing up wine.

Talking about fashion and not mentioning tartan is like talking about fine dining and not bringing up wine. The fabric is an eclectic essential in high fashion, and Jean Paul Gaultier would agree.

Tartan: Romancing the Plaid by Jeffrey Banks and Doria De La Chapelle ($41) tells the story of one of fashion industry's favorite fabrics. It starts with highlighting its humble beginnings and follows through to its current status as an emblem of high fashion and luxurious taste. The book also profiles designers, like Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, and Burberry, who have incorporated tartan in their work.

Plaid may not be prevalent in your wardrobe, but knowing about its power in fashion can't hurt.

Tartan

n. Name of any numerous, distinctively colored plaid fabrics. Tartans originated in woven cloth, but are now used in many other materials.
