  • Before The Sartorialist's Scott Schuman stops someone to ask to take their picture, he says, "I pretty much know where I'm going to stand, where I'm going to place them in relationship to the light, where in the street . . . so as soon as they say, 'Okay,' I'm pretty much ready to go." He continues: "I'm not much of a people person, I don't push to find out that much more [about his subjects]. I want to shoot them the way that I see them; as opposed to really creating a true essence of who they are, it's my idea of who they are." [NY Times]
  • Christian Louboutin, on how extremes have changed in his twenty years in the business: "When I started, I remember people saying, ‘Oh my God, I can’t walk in that!’ It was like, three inches — they look like kitten heels now. The low cleavage I was doing was considered too sexy, but now what I call a low cleavage is much lower. It’s really very much a mental shift. I remember doing very pointy lasts. People would say, ‘I like the shoe, but it’s too pointy.’ And then the year after, it’s fine." [Style File]

>> Garance Dore and Scott Schuman have been dating for two years, but their lives also intersect professionally, meaning that sometimes they — and other street-style photographers — sometimes hone in on the same subjects. “We all shoot things in different ways,” Dore says. “But if both Scott and I have a good picture of the same girl, we’ll both post it. We share some readers, and some readers aren’t the same.” She has been doing her blog for four years, and Schuman has been doing his for just over five, but she adds that he is “almost like my editor in chief.” [Harper's Bazaar]

>> Garance Dore has been experimenting more and more with video content on her blog, and there's a reason, she tells The Huffington Post in a recent interview: "My dream project is to do a movie . . . about girls and life and fashion. But it's really a dream project. I'm not even at the beginning of it."

But she says for now, "more realistic[ally]," there's television. Dore's boyfriend, The Sartorialist's Scott Schuman, hinted about a TV project at the end of last year, and Dore brings the subject up again:

We're working on a TV show with Scott. We don't know yet exactly what form it's going to have. It's the same thing: why would we do a classic TV show, when the world is changing? And the world of media is changing? So we are working on the concept. We want something that talks to the people very easily and that you can see on the Internet.

The show wouldn't follow her or Schuman »

The Sartorialist's Next Ventures: Clothing and TV

Scott Schuman's had a big year, but 2010 might be even greater.

Scott Schuman's had a big year, but 2010 might be even greater. While promoting his awesome book at the Sass and Bide store in Sydney, Australia, The Sartorialist revealed details on an upcoming clothing line and TV show.

"But also there's maybe a TV show coming up, maybe a clothing collection coming up. There's a lot of negotiating going on right now . . . I was offered a lot of shows before and I don't think the companies were right that were asking me. But this company I think is right. It's a very well known director and all, they're a company. . . . So maybe there's a TV show, maybe there's an accessories collection that might lead into a full clothing collection. So there's a lot of other things coming up but it's still early in the process, " said Schuman. We're tickled pink.

FabSugar Exclusive! The Sartorialist Signs and Chats With Fab

I've never seen such a thing in San Francisco: When we left the book signing of The Sartorialist by Scott Schuman at the Paul Smith store last night, the line to get in was down the block and around the corner. It's safe to say the street-style photog is a star. Book in hand, we approached the dapper Scott, who's completely handsome and respectable in person. He signed away, we chic chatted.
So why did he pick Julie, the New Yorker, for the cover? He explained how every time he posts Julie's picture on The Sartorialist, people comment about how perfect she is, so chic, so modern. But what they don't know is that she's less perfect than most because one leg is slightly shorter than the other. She's not traditionally perfect, but she knows how to work her imperfections and has a great pose. Selecting her for the cover had a deeper meaning than just someone who looked great.
