I always love receiving professional flower arrangements where the inside of the vase has been wrapped with leaves, concealing the stems of the flowers. Of course, I am happy to receive any bouquet at all, but these kinds are my favorite. So when I picked up this $5 bunch of tulips, I thought I'd try to re-create the pro trick.
Tulips' long, wide leaves are perfect for this effect. I usually cut off any lower leaves in my bouquets to prevent them from growing bacteria anyway, so I had a few to spare. After arranging my tulip stems in the vase, I simply took two of these leaves, flattened out, and coiled (or wrapped) them around the bunch. Then, I dropped them into my vase. Since the vase was narrow to begin with, the wrap remained tight and did not uncoil. But if you're using a wider vase, such as those low chunky ones, I would suggest taping the leaves with Scotch, or even fastening them together with a sewing pin.
