Valentino Couture Spring 2013

Other couturiers have built small parks with real trees and bushes to display their Spring 2013 Couture collections, but Valentino's Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli used garden elements in their actual garments.

Curlicues made from tubes of red, white, or black fabric decorated everything from dresses to suits and even shoes, echoing the wrought-iron gates and fences used to tame nature in public parks. One gray dress covered in embroidered birds was paired with a black cape made from the tubing, making the model wearing it look like a mobile birdcage. Black lace was arranged on one A-line skirt to look like a garden maze, and a procession of shimmering green leaves snaked up a sheer ruffled dress.

And while every other look carried a floral embellishment or appliqué of some kind, this collection was lightweight and even breezy in some instances. That feeling owed to Chiuri and Piccioli's use of sheer fabrics and light colors. With the exception of Valentino red, the collection primarily featured whites, cream, gray, pale pink, and black. A few sleek dresses without decoration and jackets with an off-the-shoulder cut helped the offering feel modern.

Battle of the Pretty Princesses: Eugenie vs. Beatrice

Princess Eugenie of York and Princess Beatrice of York arrived at Westminster Abbey wearing two gorgeous outfits — a bright blue, floral-printed dress by Vivienne Westwood and a nude A-line dress from Valentino Couture, respectively.

Princess Eugenie of York and Princess Beatrice of York arrived at Westminster Abbey wearing two gorgeous outfits — a bright blue, floral-printed dress by Vivienne Westwood and a nude A-line dress from Valentino Couture, respectively. Princess Eugenie went for a colorful look, wearing a bold blue dress with a voluminous skirt, flowered jacket, and peacock-feathered hat. She accessorized with bronze pumps and a matching box clutch. Princess Beatrice, on the other hand, opted for a subdued, neutral look — she wore a dusty-pink, A-line belted coat with nude t-strap heels and a very amazing, very Lady Gaga-esque fascinator. Which princess do you think looked the prettiest?

Ginnifer Goodwin in Red Lace Valentino Couture: Love It or Hate It?

There are certain dresses I can't tell right off the bat if I love or hate.

There are certain dresses I can't tell right off the bat if I love or hate. Ginnifer Goodwin's red lace Valentino Couture dress she wore to the Genesis Awards is one of them. On one hand, the color is punchy, the lace romantic. On the other, it's not coming together as beautifully as I had hoped. The silhouette is quite matronly, and the taupe pumps don't help the situation. What do you think?

Oscars Red Carpet: Sarah Larson

Former cocktail waitress Sarah Larson is one lucky lady: not only is she on the arm of George Clooney, but she's also at the Oscars!

Former cocktail waitress Sarah Larson is one lucky lady: not only is she on the arm of George Clooney, but she's also at the Oscars! But lucky doesn't necessarily equal fashionable. Her strapless Valentino Couture gown is pretty, but not Oscar-worthy. Do you agree?

Spring 2008 Couture: Valentino

After 45 years of dressing women impeccably, Valentino said his last goodbyes yesterday with one final couture collection.

After 45 years of dressing women impeccably, Valentino said his last goodbyes yesterday with one final couture collection.

The exit was consummately Valentino. Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, and newly-appointed Valentino designer Alessandra Facchinetti witnessed a parade of bright bubble coats, tiered gowns, floral prints and ladylike suiting. The finale was the ultimate symbol of Val's contribution to fashion: the red dress. A stream of models wearing that one red gown filed out at the end, sending the retiring designer off in style, as no other finale could. Farewell, Valentino!

Fall 2007 Couture: Valentino

Valentino really went all out this time around - but why shouldn't he?

Valentino really went all out this time around - but why shouldn't he? He's celebrating his 45th anniversary in fashion!

No doubt about it, the show was extravagant: marabou, sequins, fur, and lamé went every which way. Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani, Donatella Versace, Tom Ford, and Diane von Furstenberg all populated the front row. The models looked dressed and ready for a ball, and there was plenty of Valentino's trademark old-school glamour to go around.

Opulently detailed suits in white, grey, and black were followed by gorgeous cocktail dresses in gold, silver, black, purple, and pink. For the finale, Valentino sent endless amounts of those red carpet-worthy floor-length gowns he does so well: bejeweled, satiny, neck-plunging absolutely divine gowns. And of course, the most strikingly beautiful dress was in his favorite color: red. I can't wait to see what happens on his 50th anniversary!
