Fall 2009 New York Trend Report: Red Is The Color Of The Season

We just had to wait until after Valentine's Day to say this--we're thinking red is the hot color for Fall 2009.

We just had to wait until after Valentine's Day to say this--we're thinking red is the hot color for Fall 2009. Not only have head-to-toe red looks come together from Lyn Devon and 6119 Ilana Sunderland, but, last night, Ruffian sent their red-clad models down a matching runway. Combine the monochromatic examples with the glimpses of it at Rag & Bone (and color is hard to come by with those gents), the transparent instances at Verrier, and the ruby prints at Karen Walker, and you've got yourself a pretty strong case for the color.

Designer Spotlight: Verrier

Four years ago, when Ashleigh Verrier graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York, Saks did an unprecedented thing: They bought her entire senior thesis collection.

Since then, the former Proenza Schouler intern has culled her line with a feminine, vintage-inspired aesthetic that produces fluttery ruched tops, satin tulip skirts, and sheer organza dresses. Ashleigh infuses her ladylike looks with a few subversive elements like cropped tops or see-through fabric, and is definitely a die-hard devotee to the world of fashion: She named her dog Schiaparelli, after the famous Parisian fashion designer of the '20s and '30s, Elsa Schiaparelli.

Backstage at Verrier A/W 08

Ashleigh Verrier, one of our Pre-Fashion Week Video Series subjects, showed her A/W 08 collection in the tents last night.

Ashleigh Verrier, one of our Pre-Fashion Week Video Series subjects, showed her A/W 08 collection in the tents last night. It was a dramatic presentation, where Chopin-infused ambient tunes blasted while pretty doll-like models stomped the runway. During our backstage interview, we hung around and snapped a few shots of the action before the show. It takes a lot of madness to get these pretty girls in pretty dresses. For every girl there is a makeup artist, for every makeup artist there is a camera, for every camera there is a publicist, and then there are a lot of bluetooths and paper signs. So much of these things, in fact, that we stood eating chocolate (Dove is a Verrier sponsor. Oh yeah, there are sponsors.) postulating that if one more flash went off, we would all go blind. And then we snapped one more.
