Tyler Alexandra Spring 2012

>> Tyler Ellis wants to make pieces that are timeless, timely, and sophisticated — or as she puts it, "based on classical elegance with a modern edge." If that credo sounds familiar, it should: Ellis is the daughter of Perry Ellis, a designer revered the world over for his clean-lined, understated approach to modern sportswear.

Inspired by her late father, Ellis created the Tyler Alexandra handbag line in 2010, and, with its architectural silhouettes and refined materials, the collection manages to strike a balance between luxurious and wearable. "It is all about distinctive shapes and, most importantly, touch. I chose leathers and skins that differed from the norm," Tyler Ellis explains. Slim box bags and chain-strap pouches come in a super-tactile assortment; there is suede baby-blue crocodile, pearly fuschia satin, and even a metallic "tweed" calfskin.

Handmade in Paris and Italy, the bags are also rife with the kind of smart details and personal touches one would expect from the daughter of an American design icon: Interior pockets are roomy, hardware is feminine, and each bag is adorned with a signature pinecone fastener. "[Pinecones hold] the spiritual significance of eternity, dating all the way back to ancient Egypt. When I was developing my brand in Paris, I began to notice the city is full of pinecones — door handles, tops of poles, the garden at the Ritz — so I decided to make the pinecone the Tyler Alexandra symbol, and hope to be around for eternity."

The She even has a fragrance, handed out to concert goers, called La Voce by Renée Fleming which benefits the Met. Populism and opera may be a concept we can get behind.

Louis Vuitton seems to have quite the sense of humour with their "core values" campaign. First it was former Mikhail Gorbachev Russian president now its men who pretend to spy on the Russians. Sean Connery may have just sat for Annie Leibovitz. We suppose Ian Fleming's version of James Bond would be very into nice luggage as an idea. In other strange combinations news Sonic Youth's bassist Kim Gordon is making a line for hip moms. May be kindly suggest they check out Kirna Zabete newly launched ecommerce site? They are the only store to sell Lanvin online!

Preppy Without The Privilege At Perry Ellis

The preppy aesthetic may be the most reinterpreted element in menswear as it is forever being repurposesd for designers that want a little polish.

The preppy aesthetic may be the most reinterpreted element in menswear as it is forever being repurposesd for designers that want a little polish. John Crocco is a master at just this effort, but instead of giving us tired ironic preppy to appeal to the trendy young folks (and we don't care about the young folks) he gives us "preppy without the privilege." This is menswear for everyman without any of the attitude.

Is it fashion forward scary? Not in the slightest. And we applaud him for this effort as we are fairly sure we know all the men that go in for the natty obesssions and the market isn't that large. We say better to serve the regular men that don't want their look to be stuck in some circa 2001 era of non fashion. Not that there isn't some whackness going on with pink pants, a hooded vest and lots of cutesy shorts but you gotta give the menswear editors something to be excited about even if the buyers probably don't care.

Thus we say, the cuts are fresh without being intimidating, the colors are appealing without being hard to wear. Sky blues and lilac help round out comfortable beiges. All in all its a collection that is serving its consumers. Which to us is the best thing fashion can do. And if you just need a nice sport coat we say you couldn't do much better than this!

Backstage at Perry Ellis

Nothing helps perk up an exhausted editor operating on four hours of sleep like beautiful male models, like say the kind on parade backstage at Perry Ellis. After admiring the walkthrough we had the privilege of speaking with Creative Director John Crocco about his menswear vision for Spring 2009. He told us about his preppy without privilege aesthetic. To which we say good soundbite! Nothing makes us happier than a media trained designer who knows just how to express himself with a collection. So until the show at 11am enjoy these photos of the backstag

FABTV: Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

Wait! Before you play this video close your eyes.

Wait! Before you play this video close your eyes. I bet you can recite not only the lyrics but exactly what Kurt Cobain wore in this video. If you can't, Marc Jacobs certainly can. After all, this was the look that spawned his infamous "grunge collection" for Perry Ellis in 1992. Ironically, he was soon dismissed from the house — no matter, he obviously found his path. But back to Kurt. You know the look: striped shirt over long sleeve tee, dirty jeans, beat up Chucks and dirty cardigans. Oh, and don't forget the flannels! It was the anti-fashion look that made fashion history. Kurt was a singular sensation.
