A Six-Pack of Cures For the Most Depressing Day of the Year

If you're feeling a little down today, there's a reason for it: Jan. 6, according to an analysis of social media statistics, is the most depressing day of the year.

That distinction makes sense when you think about it. It's a Monday, and it's the first Monday of the year when many of us have had to trek back into the office. And if you live in the Northeast or Midwest, the weather's probably not great today, either.

So how do you cure this Winter ennui? How about a healthy dose of shirtless male model moments?

Male models dominated conversations both inside and outside of the fashion industry last year, and for good reason. These guys weren't just in ad campaigns and on the runway. Some of them, like Matt Terry, ended up in Super Bowl commercials, and others, like Jamie Dornan, were cast in highly anticipated movies. And lots of them made headlines without even putting on a shirt.

Without further ado, click through to see the male model moments of 2013 that will keep us talking — that is, once we pick our jaws up off the floor — well through this year.

When DSquared2's Models Stripped on the Runway

DSquared2's Fall 2013 show, which was staged in Milan in January, was revolutionary for two reasons: 1) it used a cast of entirely black models, and 2) those models ended the presentation not in the coats and suits they wore at the beginning of the show, but in long johns and t-shirts. And then they kicked off the Year of the Shirtless Male Model by throwing those t-shirts into the audience.

When We Met Matt Terry

Matt Terry had been a Calvin Klein model for about a year before he was cast in the brand's first-ever Super Bowl commercial, which debuted its then-new Concept underwear line. Words being insufficient to describe just how good Terry is at his job, we've included the full video here.

When David Beckham Modeled in His Underwear

When David Beckham Modeled in His Underwear

Who better to model the David Beckham underwear collection than David Beckham himself? For the second installment of his loungewear offering with H&M, the former soccer star took off all most of his clothes and modeled the skivvies in an East London locker room. "It was like I had gone right back to my roots," he said.

When Cristiano Ronaldo Posed For This Larger-Than-Life Ad

There's another side to the soccer-player-turned-model-turned-underwear-designer card, and that side is named Cristiano Ronaldo. This year marked the debut of Ronaldo's line CR7, which is designed in part by Richard Chai and manufactured by the Danish innerwear company JBS. But, really, who cares about that? What we're really getting at is that when it launched, they made a 62-foot-tall poster featuring Ronaldo in his skivvies. Talk about larger than life.

When Jamie Dornan Got the Role of a Lifetime

Most people know Jamie Dornan as an actor, but he got his start as a male model. So when he was cast as Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey, it was all we could do not to round up all his old modeling videos (he's done spots for Dior Homme, Banana Republic, and Calvin Klein) to, you know, see the guy's work experience.

Who knew Clint Eastwood had such smoking offspring? The brilliant minds at Town & Country introduced us to Eastwood the Younger — and his torso — in their October issue, under the auspices of a fashion story about sportswear and watches. Right. Watches.

When Nolan Funk Threw This Peace Sign

So, yes, technically, this is a Spring 2014 ad campaign — but we like to think of it as the cherry on top of Nolan Funk's awesome year. He was in the much talked-about film The Canyons, sang his face off on Glee, and otherwise looked really, really good in not very much clothing at all.
