Only 1 Man Could Pull Off All These Suits

You know you've hit the big time when you're wearing custom designer suits on stage, and there's no bigger brand for the job than Calvin Klein Collection. So yeah, Sam Smith's North American tour definitely got off to a bang at last night's New York stop when he took to the stage in men's Creative Director Italo Zucchelli's wool wardrobe. Of the process, Smith said: "I come from a big family, and whatever I do, in terms of my career, I try to form beautiful relationships with people based on passion for each other's work and trust . . . Calvin Klein helped me so much over the past few months, so it was an organic thing to do. I also just love the fit and the materials they use." We second that!

But he is far from the first performer to enlist designer expertise for onstage costumes. Following in the well-heeled footsteps of Madonna, Beyoncé, and Britney Spears, Smith's ensuring he'll be as dapper on stage as he is on the red carpet. Britney brought the circus to the stage in Dsquared2's big-top-approved designs for her 2009 tour. The looks, according to WWD, "reinterpreted clowns, trapeze artists, and jugglers into a series of provocative looks for Spears and her dancers." In addition to ringleader-inspired suiting, Britney took charge of her three-ring affair in the label's gold armor.

Another style partnership long in the making, Jennifer Lopez turned to Zuhair Murad for the kind of sultry looks that make the Lebanese designer her red carpet go-to. For her 2012 Summer tour, Jennifer kicked things off in Murad's sexy, sparkling jumpsuit.

After lighting up the 52nd Grammy Awards' red carpet in Armani Privé, Lady Gaga brought the label's theatrics to the stage in a sculpted crystal-studded leotard. That would be far from the last time she turned to her designer pal, and she most notably went on to don Armani's spiked PVC costumes throughout her Born This Way Ball tour.

For her Diamonds world tour, Rihanna cloaked herself in Riccardo Tisci's Givenchy designs. Opening her show in dramatic fashion, the singer stormed the stage in 2013 wearing a bedazzled black and gold parka ornamented with Swarovski elements, embroidery, and (should all that be too understated!) a gold bullet motif.

But of course the queen mother of all designer-singer collaborations is Madonna's partnership with Jean Paul Gautier. The innovator of the performer's iconic cone bra teamed up once again with Madge in 2012 for her MDNA tour.
