Why It's Time to Rethink Your Next Formal Outfit

Every week, we bring you the best shoppable fashion and lifestyle stories from the editors at LifeStyle Mirror. Today we are sharing Taylor Davies's t-shirts and ball skirts picks to re-create some of chicest celebrity looks from the red carpet.

It's such a simple idea: a casual shirt paired with a formal skirt. We've seen countless iterations of this look on celebrities in recent decades, perhaps most iconically on Sharon Stone at the Oscars in 1998. She wore her husband's shirt unbuttoned down to there with a Vera Wang skirt — creating an unexpectedly sexy combination.

For a more casual twist, Mary-Kate Olsen paired an ultradeep v-neck white t-shirt with a long, knit skirt and milkmaid braids back in 2007. For the Met Gala in 2010, Jenna Lyons — in true J.Crew fashion — paired an oversize cashmere sweater with a grand feathered skirt. The same year, Kate Bosworth wore a Jil Sander Spring/Summer 2011 dress that looked like a crewneck t-shirt tucked into the most fantastic mint skirt. Both looks were flawless in our eyes but got an added dose of chic with the perfectly chosen lipstick.

We're so enamored with this look, we couldn't resist reimagining each celeb's getup for today, like the silk blouse and cascading sequin skirt that rivals a combo worn by Jessica Alba last year.

Go ahead and throw it back with this little combo for your next dressy occasion — just don't forget the lipstick.Source: Getty
