Vogue Pays Tribute to Model Muses for May 2009

>> The wait is over.
Vogue May 2009:

>> The wait is over.  The May 2009 issue of Vogue, wholly dedicated to models in anticipation of this year's Model as Muse Costume Insitute Gala next month has debuted, and Liya Kebede, Natalia Vodianova, Anna Maria Jagodzinska, Isabeli Fontana, Lara Stone, Jourdan Dunn, Raquel Zimmermann, Caroline Trentini, and Natasha Poly all made the final cut, wearing what appears to be Rodarte.  This cover, shot by Steven Meisel, is notable not only because of its subjects, but because it marks the third consecutive cover to feature a woman of color on the front.

Inside, Natalia Vodianova, who has been called "the Baby" by Steven Meisel and makeup artist Pat McGrath since they starting working with her, collaborated with them again on a tribute editorial to models past, from Twiggy to Dovima, similar to the one Gisele Bundchen did for Harper's Bazaar last month.  The key to Natalia's chameleon act?  "I looked at each woman's lips — they're all different."

Fashion In 50 Seconds 04/09/09 Westwood Goes Bridal & More

Vivienne Westwood's Sex In The City gown sold so well, she decided to launch an entire bridal range.  Marios Schwab blogged for British Vogue about his typical day in the studio, managing his ready to wear and Topshop lines.  Steven Meisel will make an appearance at this year's Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography as his work for Italian Vogue will take top billing.  Alessandro Dell’Acqua left Malo because they "don't need a marquee name" and also because IT Holding, which owns Malo, went bankrupt in February.

>> THE ZEITGEIST —The It Brit invasion continues, and though all the naysayers were poised to boo Eliza Cumming's April 2009 Vogue Italia cover, the visual treatment has turned them into a crowd of believers — perhaps just this once.  While Eliza is climbing the fashion ranks, two other It Brits are about to hit the mainstream by way of MTV.  Daisy Lowe just signed to do a fly-on-the-wall documentary series of her life, and Alexa Chung is moving to New York, hinting that she'll be continuing her TV career stateside, with rumors placing her in the hands of MTV.  Sounds like the network looking for their next Lauren Conrad in the British sector, now that she's said she's moving on.

Fall 2009 Ad Campaign Rumors: Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent, and Calvin Klein

>> Just yesterday we were talking about the general direction of Fall 2009 ad campaigns and who might be the lucky girls, and already we've got some more concrete rumors.

>> Just yesterday we were talking about the general direction of Fall 2009 ad campaigns and who might be the lucky girls, and already we've got some more concrete rumors.

First up, a surprise: Balenciaga is not one of the major brands to go with a single girl that was mentioned yesterday — instead, they're going with a group — of celebrities, at that — lensed by Steven Meisel.  In the past seasons, Nicholas Ghesquiere has used Charlotte Gainsbourg and Jennifer Connelly — will they reprise their roles, or is he going with an entirely new look?  I'm leaning toward the latter.

As for Calvin Klein, Francisco Costa is rumored to have chosen Monika "Jac" Jagaciak, one of the standout faces of the season, for the main Collection campaign — as an exclusive, just as he did with Anna Selezneva for Spring 2009. And it seems Stefano Pilati is continuing his super obsession at Yves Saint Laurent — past seasons have seen Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, and Kate Moss was just photographed for an upcoming fragrance.  Now, Christy Turlington is rumored to have been shot for Fall 2009.

>> INSIDER WIRE —Steven Meisel's obsession with the Brit it-girls continues.  It all started when he photographed Pixie Geldof and Daisy Lowe for Pringle Spring 2009.  He was so enamored, he placed Pixie on the cover of Vogue Italia February 2009 with Daisy and Eliza Cummings inside; then came a portfolio for W March 2009 with Daisy, Eliza, Portia Freeman, and Peaches Geldof.  Now, it's rumored that he's shot Eliza Cummings again — this time, for the Vogue Italia April 2009 cover.  She has been having a runway moment, walking Rodarte, Marc Jacobs, Luella, and Missoni .

>> BLOWING THE COVER —Folly or flattery?  It seems the new thing for Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott to do for major March or September covers is to remake another magazine's old cover — in September 2008, they redid Patrick Demarchelier's iconic Harper's Bazaar cover with Nadja Auermann for W using Kate Hudson, and now, for Vogue Paris's March 2009 cover, they've reinterpreted Iris Strubegger from Steven Meisel's 1992 Vogue Italia cover with Kirsten McMenamy.

>> THE MODELIZER —Has Coco Rocha — who recently had her hair cut at a Steven Meisel shoot, she told The Daily — graduated from Style.com video host to E! News video host?  She was spotted backstage at Erin Fetherston today, interviewing the designer for the cameras with E! microphone, and then later, after she returned from her front row seat at Miss Sixty where she harassed Jessica Stam on the runway, looked like she was about to tape another segment in the middle of the tents.

UPDATE: It's confirmed from her blog — today was her "first day as a reporter for E!": "the pressure for that one interview with the celeb of the moment is quite intense, but don't get me wrong I lived for it. It was a great experience." [Oh So Coco]

Lanvin

>> ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL —Lanvin's past ad campaigns have involved a lot of digital retouching — Olga Sherer floating in a baroque painting or set in repeat against a stark black background — the Fall 2008 campaign even making it into a New Yorker profile about fashion's retoucher Pascal Dangin.  For Spring 2009, however, the brand has gone soft — literally.  Soft lighting frames Iselin Steiro in Steven Meisel's lens, as she plays mirror-mirror in the first shot and this second addition.

Fab Flash: Calvin Klein's Racy Video Campaign Causes a Stir

Calvin Klein is no stranger to censorship.

Calvin Klein is no stranger to censorship. Last year, the brand was prohibited from showing Eva Mendes's sexy lingerie ads, and now they're receiving another slap on the wrist. The brand's steamy new Calvin Klein Jeans video campaign, shot by Steven Meisel, has also been banned in the US.

The grainy commercial depicts hottie models — Anna Selezneva, Anna Jagodzinska, and Natasha Poly to name a few — all over each other in what looks to be a old basement. It's definitely steamy, but we've see way worse on TV screens. Calvin Klein is currently working on an edited version that will air on cable. Across the pond, our overseas friends will get to see the uncensored version on their tellies.

Calvin Klein Brings Back Steamy Jeans Commercials

>> It's been a few years since Brooke Shields told us that nothing comes between her and her Calvins — almost two decades.  Not since the early '80s, when those Calvin Klein Jeans commercials were running, has the brand tried to top them.Enter 2009, the year the label finally gives it another go, with a grainy Steven Meisel-shot commercial featuring Anna Selezneva, Anna Maria Jagodzinska, and Natasha Poly greased up and writhing in nothing but their Calvins.  The ads have already been banned from even late-night cable TV — nothing CK isn't used to, since the same thing happened last year with their Eva Mendes Secret Obsession commercial — but they plan on having this one actually make it on TV in the US.  An edited version will air on American cable, and countries like Italy, France, Spain, and Germany will run the unedited version below.
