In fact, she came back full force and staged a whole runway show last week at <a href="http://fabsugar.com/tag/new+york+fashion+week" >New York Fashion Week</a> - more than <a href="http://fabsugar.com/1026970" >those still left on Project Runway</a> can say for themselves, since they shared a catwalk. Just minutes before her label, Na-Be by Victorya Hong, made its runway debut, <a href="http://bellasugar.com/" >Bella</a> (thanks doll!) caught up with Victorya for a few Fab words . . . </p> <p><b>Is this the first time you've done a big show like this?</b><br /> Yes; I'm scared.</p> <p><b>Oh no!</b><br /> And everyone keeps saying, "Scared? Well, okay, that means you're excited." And I say, "That means I'm <I>really</I> excited." </p> <p><b>So a year ago, if someone had told you that you'd be showing at the Altman Building, what would your response have been?</b><br /> I think a year ago that would have probably been something I never would have imagined. Even though it's happening now, it's still kind of hard to believe that it's happening!</p> <p>To hear more from Victorya and see her debut fashion week collection, read more</p> <p><b>How many different looks do you have?</b><br /> I have 29.</p> <p><b>Wow.</b><br /> But it still looks small. When I look at the clothes and how much hard work goes into the clothes, and the eight minutes up on stage . . . I call it tightly edited.</p> <p><b>What was inspiration for this collection?</b><br /> It was definitely very '80s inspired. For me, that's the part of fashion that I really enjoy: doing the research, looking at images in archives, things like that. So that's what I did for a good month, I just looked at images galore from the early to mid '80s.</p> <p><b>You're a child of the '80s, then.</b><br /> Yeah! Were you? </p> <p><b>How'd you guess?</b><br /> [Laughs] It's hard for me to get away from that because I find myself listening to music from the '80s constantly, looking at films again from the '80s, looking at books, things like that. So I think it has had a pretty big impact on the way I look at things, and on my aesthetic in general. </p> <p><b>Will people be able to buy the clothes tonight?</b><br /> I hope so! This is my first really big collection. I've never really put things into production. At a time when so many designers don't know when to simplify their creations - I'm looking at you <a href="http://fabsugar.com/tag/project+runway" >Project Runway contenders</a>! - these designs, for men and women, seem just right.</p> <p>Smart jackets, tulip skirts, and everyday blouses walked through a surreal door stage. A couple colors, plum and canary yellow, provided some pop, while an ivory and black paisley print was whimsy. There's an elegant extravagance to their creations, balancing luxury and refinement. At last week's show, the hair and makeup teams created a simple and flawless look for the models, and because it's something that anybody can wear, I thought I'd share a few tips.</p> <p>A team of stylists from <a href="http://www.ritahazansalon.com/ritahazan.html" target="_blank">Rita Hazan Salon</a> wrapped the models' hair into simple ballerina bun. "It's very simple and easy," said stylist Juan Carlos. Nothing is too fussy-hair is just slightly teased a little bit to create a little flyaway and softness so the hair can flow as the girls walk. Ever since Stila's founder, Jeanine Lobell, sold the company, I haven't thought of Stila as a line so closely linked to fashion. But it was a lot of fun to see the new spring colors being used on such a high-style show. The skin was matte, the smoky eye was soft, and the lips and cheeks had a natural flush (thanks to <a href="http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P202025&amp;categoryId=3865" target="_blank">Cherry Crush lip and cheek stain</a>. One tip I wouldn't have thought of: Shobrook used brown mascara on lashes, then applied black Major Lash on just the tips. Her Fall collection is a nice balance of grunge-inspired plaids, fine tuned menswear pieces, and maxi-length feminine skirts and dresses.</p> <p><span class="inline left"></span></p> <p>Prints and bright hues are sparse, but when they do show up, the leopard, fuchsia, patchwork, and yellow all work to great effect. Below the knee pencil skirts, sheaths, fur trim, and neutral colors reflect the '40s era Jenni was influenced by. </p> <p>Now imagine walking through the presentation to a classical orchestra playing Nirvana. And at almost every show, my notepad has disappointingly few marks. <a href="http://jezebel.com/354782/fashion-week-runways-were-almost-a-total-whitewash" target="_blank">Jezebel has also noticed the diversity void</a>, noting that black women appeared on only 5% of the runways. Asian and Latina women didn't get much catwalk time, either. </p> <p>I talked about the diversity issue with designer Wenlan Chia, whose <a href="http://www.twinklebywenlan.com/" target="_blank">Twinkle by Wenlan</a> presentations are consistently among the most multicultural. She said that she doesn't cast models with any quotas in mind, that instead, she looks for models that reflect the world around her:</p> <blockquote><p>"We have an open casting, all the girls come in, and I choose the girl who I think will work the best with the clothes. Eventually I always end up using different girls from different backgrounds. I think that's what actual life is. I work with Asians, I work with black people, so this is our environment. It's very natural to me. So if I had a runway show that was all white, it's not very natural to me. A warrior. An artful, independent spirit - which is always my muse. I really wanted to play with the idea of hard and soft and having these structural elements but keeping it feminine and really contoured to the body. I definitely brought it closer to the body this season. I was feeling sexy.</p> <p><b>Which is your favorite look from the collection?</b></p> <p>I’m really excited about the navy shirtdress. It’s simple but tailored to the body and has this interesting detail. We used this technique: We sliced away the fabric and then inserted borders underneath so if you look up close you see these slices, these different sections on the body. I love to play with lines on the body. This particular dress we encrusted with an armor of Swarovski crystals.</p> <p>To read the rest of my interview and to see more looks from Lyn, read more</p> <p><b>What about the fabrics and materials you used?</b></p> <p>I’ve used a stretch file that is really amazing because it holds shape very well. The A-line shape is one of the silhouettes I was working with, in addition to the very fitted silhouettes. I used a chinced wool that has this hard armor-like sheen to it but at the same time it’s really soft. This blanket wool that has a protective feeling. Some great jerseys and crepe wool, which allowed me to contour to the body but in an effortless way. </p> <p><b>It’s true: The clothes may be armor but they don’t look stiff.</b></p> <p>I always embrace effortlessness. There’s definitely that play of trying to create a tough elegance but always making it wearable and modern.</p> <p><b>What’s next?!</b></p> <p>I’m thinking Cuba - I might take a trip there. I want to keep it sultry and sexy. I just bought a book about Cuba and you’ll see something slightly less constructed.</p> <p><b>What one item of clothing should every woman have in her closet?</b></p> <p>Definitely a little black dress. The one from my Fall collection; it holds you in, you can wear it with boots or heels. As reported, Kevin Federline was front and center for the show alongside the likes of an especially fierce looking Victoria Beckham and Selma Blair. Hotness. K-Fed looks a little tired these days - I wonder why. The man of the hour Marc himself looked like he was having a blast at the show and after party, gotta believe it's always a relief as soon as it's over. Reyes, who started out under Oscar de la Renta's wing, is honing his name as designer to the sleek and chic.</p> <p>Taffeta trenches, skirts, and dresses were patterned after Reyes' inspiration: the curving lines of topographical maps. Funky jewelry adorned necks, heads, and ears, and earth tones ruled the color scheme, aside from a cameo of fuchsia or cerulean. </p> <p>The label's strength always lies in the dresses, and in this collection, there were plenty to choose from. That flaked silver metallic number? Though, they were refined and comfortable. Never one to follow trends, but rather set them, I don't know if looking like a box is one trend I want to follow . . . </p> <p>Not a belt in sight, cocoon-like shapes gave way to cropped pants, collared shirts and v-neck sweaters. Dropped hemlines took things low, while shoulders remained a focal point. There was a bright bag here and there, but I was slightly distracted by the Jazzercise headbands. Very. </p> <p>I knew it would be a mob scene getting in, and luckily I was on the list (you never know sometimes). I wasn't too far in the nosebleeds - and I was directly facing the panel of judges and celebs. Tons of Project Runway alums were mingling in the crowd, including recent cast off Ricky. But honestly, my eyes were on guest judge Victoria Beckham. When she came out, in her orange draped dress and matching orange shoes, the crowd took notice. After photo ops she sat with Nina Garcia and Michael Kors. She was very poised and calm. Funnily, she took diligent notes during every collection - she was taking her guest judge job very seriously.</p> <p><span class="inline left"></span></p> <p>Lights down, lights up. Our girl Heidi appears announcing, "Hello everyone!" She introduces the judges, and guest judge, and the crowd swoons. You know the little shadow thing they do with the white Project Runway sign at the back of the runway, when someone walks by it but you can only see their shadow? That was the first glimpse of the designer to come. First up? Sweet P.</p> <p>Obviously emotional (surprise) she was visibly nervous and kept her hello short and sweet. Sweet P's designs were never a favorite of mine but she did manage to pull together a cohesive collection on the runway, albeit a bit sleepy. With a palette of purple, olive green and mustard, her colors were right on for Fall. An olive cape was noteworthy, but some fits were off and black velvet jodhpurs? His separates - ruffled blouses, intricate draping and magenta pants - were overdone and redundant. His dresses were wonderful. His collection, with Starbucks colors of chocolate, ivory and mocha, and lots of black, had Edwardian touches, dramatic ruffles, head-to-toe black and an emphasis on the top half of the body. If Rami should consider bridal, Christian should consider couture. When Christian was taking in applause he did a little sashay to Victoria - she did one right back. Perhaps Jillian, because of her flirty little skirts and dresses, but maybe Rami and his gorgeous gowns. Alas, my favorite never wins. Allow me to clarify. <a href="http://www.vplnyc.com/" target="_blank">VPL by Victoria Bartlett</a> does play on visible panty lines, but it's seen as a good thing in her world. I've been coveting one of Victoria Bartlett's color contrast bra-like tops for a while now and was excited to see her unique bodycon creations in the flesh, or rather, in the fabric. VPL celebrates contrast and contradiction and the designer is inspired by some really interesting stuff. See VPL's Fall collection and hear the designer behind the label.</p> <p><span class="inline left"></span></p> <p><b>You’ve always done innerwear as outerwear. And now a lot of designers are doing that.</b></p> <p>Yes, it’s always been that way. A lot people mistake it for lingerie. I never intended lingerie; it was always innerwear. Years ago when I was at Miu Miu I started doing innerwear as outerwear and I was always fascinated by innerwear to be seen. Innerwear, outerwear, anywhere. It’s really a mixing block so you can layer.</p> <p><b>Is there anything you did differently this time around?</b></p> <p>You know what’s weird, I went back to what is inherent to VPL which is the “Musculature” of the whole body. The only thing that was really new was bringing more tailoring to it. I’m really into textures. Viscose is so soft, when you want to sleep in something . . . it’s just so soft.</p> <p><b>Who are your muses?</b></p> <p> [Interruption for an introduction to shoe designer Jean Michel Cazabat, who did the shoes for the show - loved the metallic flat boots!]</p> <p>Louise Bourgeois [French artist and sculptor] and pendulous shapes and body formations. It’s quite sensual. She uses all color palettes and different textures. And Hans Bellmer [the German surrealist artist] who did jointed dolls in the late ‘20s. You have all these lines that were divided and sculptural muscle areas. Sophia Bush, on the other hand, girl's got some Fashion Week stamina. I had a 7 a.m. appointment to see makeup maestro Bobbi Brown create the runway look for Brian Reyes. </p> <p>Inside the Plaza Hotel, Bobbi and her team of makeup artists worked to create a natural, windblown look. (Even the eyebrows were meant to look tousled.) Watching her work was amazing - she's so quick, so focused. Then, when you get to the venue, especially when you do a makeup test on someone who isn't in the show, it changes. So it's a work in progress. And it was really a collaboration. My job is to intrepret Brian's vision, using the colors of the moment. So it's gone from a healthy, nude-y face with strong brows to a outdoorsy, in-the-country powdery look - the opposite of the look I did yesterday, which was all gloss everywhere. So, are there any trends? No. [laughs]</p> <p><strong>Are you using existing products from your line, or are these new colors for Fall?</strong><br /> A combination. We're using some from our Fall collection, which has mauve-inspired tones. </p> <p><strong>I've been seeing a lot of shows that have fresh, clean skin. Are you using concealer alone, or foundation as well?</strong><br /> I'm using a light foundation all over. Especially in this venue, where the lights are really strong, you need foundation all over. Most of the people backstage at last night's 3.1 Phillip Lim show could tell you. Luckily, I was able to duck in and speak with Nars makeup artist Ayako and the gifted hair stylist Odile Gilbert, who was working with Aveda. </p> <p>While taking a break with her adorable (and very well-behaved) doggy, Ayako explained the inspiration for the look of the show's heroine. "She's very strong and confident in a very modern way," she said. "Eighties eyebrows and '30s lips meet together for Phillip's collection." To create the look, Ayako used a <a href="http://www.narscosmetics.com/Kabuki-Artisan-Brushes-C406_category_6.aspx" target="_blank">Botan brush</a> to give a very light dusting of powder foundation only on models who needed it. Then, eyebrow hairs were drawn on individually for a manga effect. Eyes were completely bare, as were cheeks, but lips got a pop of red with <a href="http://www.narscosmetics.com/Lipstick-C10_category_1.aspx" target="_blank">semi-matte lipsticks</a> in Fire Down Below and Scarlett Empress.</p> <p>In the hair-styling section, everything smelled like Aveda-such a calming encounter in the whirlwind of the backstage area. Lead stylist Odile Gilbert had a simple explanation of the hair, which softly snaked around in the back of the head. "There is not a past inspiration," she said. "It's a girl from 2008. The matronly feel was carried through with long, loose granny cardigans. But Phillip kept his label's cohesiveness, focusing on solid, classic pieces with a contemporary flair. Pants were cropped, jackets boxy, jewelry Marni-esque. Lepore really knows how to use Chantilly lace and tailor a pant. A fuchsia knit dress caught my eye backstage and on the runway. Her suiting always has a way of being sexy and '30s inspired dresses were classic, but modern. It’s all about growing up and being mature about throwing out what’s not fabulous.</p> <p><b>That’s totally what I’m trying to do with my closet!</b></p> <p>I know, it’s so hard and I feel like I’ve done so many shows and I’ve finally achieved this point where I’m 20 looks fewer than I used to do. Because it’s so hard in life to know what’s good and what’s not good. So it’s really working through and jumping on ideas early enough that we only have the star ones. </p> <p>But the real idea behind the show is just going out and partying and being a fabulous, confident, sexy woman. Going to a cocktail party in a tiara and feeling good about yourself. But what I love about this collection is that there are lots of classics. </p> <p>There’s black and white tweed mixed with all shades of pink - from powder pink to fuchsia. Then big bold flower prints, which are anchored with Chantilly lace and velvet to bring them into a Fall feel. And pearls! Little bits of pearl beading and brooches. When I thought about the collection I thought these are staples for every woman’s wardrobe. The great high waisted pencil skirt, pretty Chantilly lace tops and bustiers, and pearls. And pink!</p> <p><span class="inline left"></span></p> <p><b>What are your favorite pieces from the collection?</b></p> <p>The bohemian blouse with pearl beading, <a href="http://fabsugar.com/gallery/222986?page=0,2,0" >a fitted chiffon stripe dress</a> that flairs really full at the hips with sequin edging, I love <a href="http://fabsugar.com/gallery/222986?page=0,0,0" >the little black dress</a> – it’s a very pretty corseted silhouette, with a draped sleeve.</p> <p><b>Any new collaborations we can get excited for?</b></p> <p>We have a lingerie licensing we expect to sign very shortly. And we have new shops opening on Melrose in LA and in Chevy Chase, Maryland.</p> <p><b>Who are your fashion icons?</b></p> <p>I love going through and looking at anyone from the ‘30s - Schiaparelli, Coco Chanel. Currently John Galliano, his recent couture collection was unbelievable. I always love Gaultier because he has such a fun aesthetic to the way he mixes things up.
