Marion Cotillard's Oscar Dress, From Runway to Red Carpet

Just like with Ellen Pompeo and her SAG Awards gown, for Marion Cotillard and her Oscars gown, it was love at first sight. "I've worked with him several times," she said of Jean Paul Gaultier, who designed her fishtailed frock. "When I saw this dress from his last collection, I knew I wanted to wear it."

Her white and silver mermaid gown was based on a similar dress from Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring 2008 couture collection - except that one was black and gold. So I'm asking you to step back, and imagine: Do you like Marion's dress as she wore it, or do you wish she would have worn the black and gold runway version? I'm having trouble deciding which I would have preferred . . .

2008 Spring Couture Fashionistas

Celebrities and fashion editors alike convened in Paris this week for the decadent debut of Spring couture season. Chanel models sauntered out of a giant tweed jacket, the Dior runway popped with color, Valentino said his last goodbye, and more. As much as we love looking at the fashion on the catwalk, there's plenty to admire from the front row, especially with headliners like Diane Kruger, Victoria Beckham, Blake Lively, and the venerable Anna Wintour in attendance. I've gathered a few (okay, more than a few) snaps of the ladies who show us how to view couture in style, and to kick us off, Diane Kruger ever-lovely at Chanel.

Celebrity Style: Blake Lively

I've been going through Gossip Girl withdrawals so I was happy to see Blake Lively, aka Serena van der Woodsen, at Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring Couture show. The actress is new to the runway scene, but she was looking all the pro in her Jean Paul Gaultier dress. I'm baffled by the strange leather piece around her neck so I gave her something more pretty and conventional. Doesn't she remind you of a young Cate Blanchett? If she keeps attending these couture collections, she'll be famous like Cate before she knows it!

Spring 2008 Couture: Valentino

After 45 years of dressing women impeccably, Valentino said his last goodbyes yesterday with one final couture collection.

The exit was consummately Valentino. Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, and newly-appointed Valentino designer Alessandra Facchinetti witnessed a parade of bright bubble coats, tiered gowns, floral prints and ladylike suiting. The finale was the ultimate symbol of Val's contribution to fashion: the red dress. A stream of models wearing that one red gown filed out at the end, sending the retiring designer off in style, as no other finale could. Farewell, Valentino!

2008 Spring Couture: Givenchy

If there's such a thing as being equally minimalist and over-the-top, Givenchy's Spring 2008 couture show is it. Natalia Vodianova and Lou Doillon looked on as Riccardo Tisci's creations came to life.

On the simple spectrum, there were slim white pants and tailored white blazers, sheer tank tops and ivory tights. The rest was drama at its best: accordion-like silhouettes, layered feathers, holey sequin jackets, sheer tiered gowns, overly exaggerated origami frocks, and pretty embellishments. The way I see it, if the no-frills Jil Sander and the overly frilly Dior produced a fashion-forward love child, this collection would be her. Model child indeed!

Simply Fab: Christian Lacroix Evian Bottles

It's cool when designers branch out into other fashion categories - like sunglasses and swimwear - but when a designer breaks the mold and translates his or her vision to another category all together, now that's cool. Though it's not my favorite water, Evian has teamed up with French designer Christian Lacroix to create two special water bottles - rumored to make an appearance at New York Fashion Week. There's couture inspired (left) and pret-a-porter (right). That there in the middle is an inspirational image from his Spring couture collection, that, well, reminded me of water. While I dig the sculpture-esque look of the couture bottle, I feel compelled to serve the pret-a-porter bottle at my next cocktail party. How Fab would that be? Beyond . . .

Speaking of designers and liquids, Perrier and Paul & Joe have become packaging buddies. What a cool trend this is!

Spring 2008 Couture: Armani Privé

Yet again, Mr. Giorgio Armani presented a drama-filled collection that his best costumer, Cate Blanchett, can easily fall in love with.

Armani Privé came in the form of oversized ruffles, poufy bubble hems, large stand-up collars, fuzzy feathers, overly tiered skirts, and lots of embellishments. And though the designer isn't usually one to overdo accessories, this collection was an exception. Chunky bangles, big clutches, beaded necklaces, and jeweled belts added to the theatrics of the show. I'm looking forward to seeing the Armani Privé runway translated onto the red carpet.

Spring 2008 Couture: Chanel

Karl has interpreted an arctic freeze and only he could make frigid fashion look so desirable. With an icy palette of gray, black, and white, there was plenty of detailing and tailoring to keep the eyes happy. Some of the sophisticated and ultra-chic ensembles actually made me shiver - this mini-fied black and white suit for one.

Tiered ruffles and volumes were modern maneuvers, creating a slight Chanel cupcake aesthetic. Plumage and beading was a slight nod to Armani, but don't get me wrong: Karl does this very well, too. All towering over covetable ballet flats, this couture collection was sweet, but ultimately fierce.

P.S. Get a load of the massive iceberg of a classic Chanel jacket.

Spring 2008 Couture: Christian Dior

Dita Von Teese and Fab fave Diane Kruger, both in chic black, looked on as John Galliano kicked off couture week. Against a set of dark draped fabric, intricately embroidered gowns in all shades of the rainbow - chartreuse, persimmon, fuchsia, and canary yellow included - popped. Gustav Klimt-inspired accoutrements, leopard print, and feathers all got special nods: the latter even adorning eyelashes in fluorescent shades.

Galliano's love affair with vertiginous platform shoes continued, this time with cut-out wedge heels and color-contrasting cap-toes. All in all, an opening that didn't necessarily venture into new frontiers for Dior couture, but a strong opening nonetheless.

Fab Ad: Valentino Haute Couture Spring 2008

I'm always game for something different, and these shots definitely fit that description.

The Mondrian-inspired background juxtaposed with Valentino's ruffly Spring couture collection, featuring model Alison Nix, is an unexpected surprise, but I think it works. I love the idea of using geometric shapes and primary colors to back such a soft collection.
