Best of 2008: Fabulous Fashion Week Shows

2008 spawned a tremendous flurry of fabulous Fashion Week shows. Let's see, there were New York Fall and Spring shows, Milan Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, and LA Fashion Week. Oh, and don't forget all of the ravishing Resort and Pre-Fall collections. Some of my faves were Proenza Schouler's Fall line, Alexander Wang's Spring offerings, and Balmain's Spring collection in Paris. All different, all divine. Which were your favorites? London Fashion Week, Spring '09: Bring on the Quirk

New York Fashion Week ignites some trends, but it's in London where the envelope is pushed beyond the limit. Take, for example, Giles Deacon's Pac-Women. London Fashion Week is nearing completion, but there was enough quirk to last a lifetime, or at least until next season. While overexposure started in New York, the king of quirk, Henry Holland, took the concept to a whole new, playful level. Proceed with caution.

Kate and Mischa Have Courtside Seats at Fashion Week

Kate Moss sat in the front row yesterday for Vivienne Westwood's fashion show in London before heading backstage to pose with the designer. She's no stranger to a catwalk, but apparently this is the first LFW presentation Kate's attended in nearly two years. Joining her for the special occasion were Mischa Barton, Pam Anderson and Dita Von Teese. It's nice to see that after a few years of madness, the caring and still trendsetting Kate made her way back to Fashion Week.

Freaky or Fabulous? Giles's Pac-Women

While my girls in London wrap up their own Fashion Week, Giles - someone I've always had my eye on - sent rather tame, graphic designs down his runway. But what wasn't tame was the Pac-Man-inspired massive head gear. So it's a bit distracting from the shift dresses and draped black gown, it's super fun. I enjoy the contrast of the tame clothes and ode to the '80s accessory. It takes me back to dentist visits where I played Pac-Man while my teeth soaked in fluoride. Maybe this pleasant memory is why I don't mind visiting my dentist and Giles's poking fun.

Fab Flash: London Fashion Week Says No Go to Model Health Certificate

As the model health issue turns, it has been announced that a model health certificate for London Fashion Week is “an unworkable solution,” according to Hilary Riva, chief executive of the British Fashion Council. What is further disappointing, “From our conversations with our international counterparts in New York, Milan and Paris it has become clear that they do not recognize the need for an international health certificate.”

The BFC already banned models under 16 from walking the London shows and requires the shows to have healthy backstage environments. Also, the BFC is developing a website that will have advice for models and aspiring models, with links to sites about eating disorders. I'm not so sure this is as strong as a health certificate . . .
