Fab Finding Follow-Up: Screen Printing Party!

I recently heard about an awesome DIY spot in San Francisco: Workshop. The genesis of a self-proclaimed DIY-er, Workshop houses a ton of fun classes - complete with a rad DJ and free beer - for the cool and crafty. Last week, it hosted an amazing screen printing party, so you know I was there with my blank canvases. Since paint (and beer) were involved, things got a tad messy. I asked you help me piece together a fun 'fit - let's see my top three looks!

I started you off with these Alexis Bittar Neon Pyramid Earrings ($95); so artsy and abstract.

Look #1, by nikkeeb is perfect for screen printing. I like how the pastel hues add a cute girly touch.

Fab Tip: Clean Out (and Sell Out) Your Jewels

Here's a little-known fact about me: my ear lobes are super sensitive, and wearing anything other than studs tend to irritate them. I was recently cleaning out my jewelry drawer when I realized I have over 20 cute pairs of earrings I haven't worn in ages. A light bulb went off in my head - why not sell them to close friends and co-workers? After all, they're of no use to me, just sitting there. With my new entrepreneurial spirit, I went to work, sanitizing each piece with alcohol, then sticking them in small zip-lock baggies. I was on to something . . .

Next, I sent an email to friends and close co-workers, alerting them about my mini earring sale. I assured them the earrings had been sanitized and that I would be selling for $5 each. No pressure, of course.
I put all the plastic baggies in a sleek Chanel shopping bag and brought it to work with me - presentation is key.
Some came to me, requesting to see the earrings, while others asked me to do a show-and-tell during lunch in the lunchroom. For those who were busy, I took the bags to them, so they could peruse at their own pace.
Once they made their selection(s), they returned the remaining earrings to me, and paid me the amount. I left them with a small, cheeky verbal message: it was nice doing business with you!

Fab friends, I encourage you to do the same if you have jewelry that's just sitting at home, unworn. Just be sure to sanitize, send a proper email, and be nice to your customers. Good luck! And for those, like me, who have sensitive ear lobes, here are some fabulous clip-on earring options.

Forever 21 became a frequent destination for its super cheap and chic baubles. Lorraine Schwartz hypnotized us with those emerald earrings Angelina Jolie wore to the Oscars. Alexis Bittar continues to be a Fab favorite with his galactic yet glamorous jewels. Erickson Beamon's funky creations wooed us to a whole new level. Celeb Style: Sophia Bush

There's nothing I like more than seeing Sophia Bush step outside the fashion box. Over the weekend, the actress attended The Private Lives of Pippa Lee premiere in NYC looking glam galactic in a long sleeve minidress by Helmut Lang. The abstract powder print is so art nouveau, and I like how she tempered it with sleek suede booties. With a dress like that, you don't need a lot of accessories.

We caught up with Alexis Bittar at his Neiman Marcus trunk show recently. He's super dreamy, as you can tell from his photo (center). And so friendly, it was comfortable, like we'd met before. Read what he had to say about his biggest fans - Fab fave Cameron Diaz and the Gossip Girl stylists - as well as how he got his start.

What sparked your interest in jewelry?

I sold antique jewelry on the street [at the 26th Street flea market in Manhattan] for 15 years. I started working with Lucite, I just pounded it, started carving it. I actually don’t know how I put it all together in my brain, but I liked that you could sculpt it. It’s pretty cheap - in the beginning I had no money. It seemed like an experimental medium. And I like working with mediums that aren’t typical. When I first saw it, I loved it and I still love it. Guys like it, too; they’re into the science of it, they’re trying to figure it out. It took a long time - the beginning was a bit difficult, then certain key people used it, and it slowly took off. When the millennium happened there was thing of perceiving everything differently and it became the new.

I've always wanted to meet the man behind my favorite Alexis Bittar jewels - I finally had the pleasure to do so at his recent Neiman Marcus trunk show. Alexis filled us in on what's going on in his world right now. He's one busy bee; his San Francisco stay was for a mere 10 hours because he had to fly to Vancouver for an appearance at Holt Renfrew. He revealed his jewelry philosophy and discussed the dope spiked bracelet Alicia Keys wore recently . . .

What’s the latest and greatest goings on?

I just finished Spring, we showed at Paris Fashion Week. We showed at Tranoi, which is a show there. I designed three collections under Alexis Bittar, and three other collections for other designers. I did Alexis Bittar for Michael Kors, we did glass, it’s all clear. And I did Michael Angel, he’s kind of a younger designer. I met him through the girls at Vogue. In a week, doing Victoria’s Secret.
