On Our Radar: Aquascutum Is Coming to America

British brand Aquascutum will be expanding its territory into the the US come Fall. The company is set to launch a line of separates named the London collection at Saks Fifth Avenue locations in August. Meanwhile, Bergdorf Goodman will carry Aquascutum's vintage collection of coats.

“I think there is a huge desire from the American consumer for us, so it’s a very good time for us to be going in,” said president and chief executive officer at Aquascutum, Kim Winser.

The Aquascutum London line will feature blouses, wool skirts, and silk graphic dresses with pricing around $780. The vintage collection will include designs inspired by Aquascutum’s archives, such as a hot pink wool swing coat priced at $3,940. Steep, but fabulous I'm sure . . .

Yesterday, the 2008 Fall Aquascutum fashion show took place in London. There were 24 models, bustling around getting primed and primped by a hair-styling team lead by Malcolm Edwards and a makeup team lead by Val Garland. All hair-styling products were L'Oreal and all tools were Babyliss Pro.

After speaking with Val about the inspiration for the outdoorsy look, she walked me through each of the YSL, Elizabeth Arden, and Becca cosmetics used to create this "done yet undone, perfect but imperfect, very equestrian, very English countryside feel." She imagined the women walking in fresh from a brisk walk in a rose garden or a horse ride and having a natural flush to their cheeks and lips.

Face: Make sure your face is clean and moisturized. Then, brush on two "clicks" worth of YSL Perfect Touch foundation and blend well using the applicator brush.
Cheeks: Use a smidgen of Becca Beach Tint (a watermelon color) and gently tap it onto the cheekbones beginning at the apples of the cheeks for an outdoorsy look. Then, add a touch of YSL Teint Parfait high on the cheekbone for added glow.
Eyes: There should be no product on the eyes before you begin. Add a touch of clear lip gloss to the lids and one coat of black mascara for a fresh and polished, natural look.
Lips: Prime lips with a little bit of Elizabeth Arden Eight-Hour Cream (not the lip balm but the body cream) and then lightly apply a little YSL Rouge Pur in Precious Garnet Lipstick to stain the lips a deep-berry color. Blend using the tip of your finger.

London Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Aquascutum

British brand Aquascutum is known for inventing the first waterproof cloth in 1853 and creating the raincoat to protect the English from the unpredictable weather. Given those facts, it's not surprising the Spring collection was chock full of outerwear. The majority were simple with clean lines, functional yet stylish. Interesting were the necklines, which included spread and motorcycle collars. They came in muted colors like navy blue, khaki, black and grey. A few khaki coats were doused with pops of fuchsia and red, which was refreshing among a sea of neutrals.

A couple dresses with paisley and floral patterns and bright hues were spotted, as well as skirt and blouse combos in solid colors like navy blue and orange. The most interesting piece was a cropped fuchsia pant, which was uncharacteristic of Aquscutum. Then again, you can always expect the unexpected in fashion.

This month, traditional British brand Aquascutum is launching a limited edition collection of coats and trenches inspired by designs from the 30s through the 50s.

The Aquascutum Vintage collection will include pieces worn by past Aquascutum fans and icons like Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis, Audrey Hepburn, and Sophia Loren, and will be sold in the U.S. exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman. The luscious coats, which run from approximately $2000-$5600, will be made of fabrics like napa leather, duchesse satin, and double cashmere - serious luxury!

Designer Spotlight: Aquascutum

In a world of countless burgeoning young designers, Aquascutum by comparison is quite ancient. Founded in 1851 by John Emary - who invented the first waterproof cloth and created the raincoat, Aquascutum's name is derived from its beginnings: 'aqua' (Latin for water) and 'scutum' (Latin for shield).

155 years or so later, head designers Michael Herz and Graeme Fidler lead the brand's legacy of impeccable British tailoring into the future. Their Fall collection was full of odes to the military - modern, and yet historic at the same time - as Aquascutum once did outfit officers in trench coats during WWI. Dig the toggles, capes, and tweed. Clearly the designers are also trying to add some sex appeal to the historical brand - they enlisted Gisele to be their new face and she always manages to do the trick.

Fab Ad: Aquascutum Fall/Winter 2007 Featuring Gisele

Gisele may have recently parted ways with Victoria's Secret, but that doesn't mean she has said goodbye to modeling once and for all! The Brazilian babe is back in front of the high fashion lenses for Aquascutum's Fall/Winter '07 ad campaign. And don't forget she will be the upcoming face of YSl's Fall ads too. This is good news to all you Gisele fans!

Shot in Cliveden - a British mansion infamous for housing a political and sex scandal in the sixties - Gisele is cast by photographer Mario Sorrenti as a bombshell involved in trysts and intrigue. The ads will run in magazines starting in August and September.

I love the idea behind the photographs, but I'm not so sure about the clothes and the finished product. What do you all think?
