Our Favorite Looks From Fashion Week So Far: Day 4

We're just about halfway through Fall 2011 New York Fashion Week, and we've already noticed a few trends emerging. More on that later, but first, let's see some highlights from day four. From elegant vintage-looking hair and makeup as seen at Lela Rose (pictured here), to bold, geometric shapes and color, be sure to tell us which ones top your list of favorites.

It's a Matte Matte Matte Matte World

If you thought the matte nail trend was a blip on the beauty radar, guess again. The no-shine look is popping up at show after show.

At Alexander Wang, an opaque neutral earned an urban edge thanks to Butter London's matte topcoat. Knock Out Cosmetics highlighted gloss-free blues and putties at DKNY, and at Behnaz Sarafpour, CND created a cashmere effect based on warm pinky-beige Desert Suede. Rounding off the list? Malandrino's cool heathered manicure (pictured), which you can recreate by applying CND polish in Dark Ruby, layering it with Copper Shimmer, and finishing with Super Matte top coat. (Subtract the shimmer shade and you've got the same look of Twinkle.)

See? Pure matteness.

Backstage Beauty: Behnaz Sarafpour

Gucci Westman has been one busy woman this week. I've seen her at Miss Sixty, Rag & Bone, and then at Behnaz Sarafpour, where she worked with MAC. Here she is applying makeup to Canadian model Lisa Cant, who is almost always the first model to arrive at a show. Punctual, that one.

Gucci's team colored models' eyes with gray, yellow, or purple shades - all of which popped on their otherwise nude faces. The makeup artists used brushes to apply the color, of course, but they also used airbrushes to spray it directly on eyelashes. And in the case of the purple eyes, they got creative by smudging MAC lipstick in Violetta around eyes. Unfortunately, that particular shade of cream makeup is available only to makeup artists, but if you'd like to know which products were used for this show's yellow eye, this guide from MAC has the details.

Fab Flash: Designers Partner with Gilt.com

A new partnership has just been formed that will allow sample sale fans to get their fix from the comfort of their own home! The Council of Fashion Designers of America has joined with Gilt.com to give CFDA members - think Marc Jacobs, Nanette Lepore - the option of doing their sample sales online.

Already, Marchesa, Rachel Roy, and Bulgari have teamed with Gilt Groupe's Gilt.com for the site's one-day designer-specific online sales, and Behnaz Sarafpour and Sari Gueron have upcoming sales in the works. Gilt Groupe offers 3-4 online sales per week - for sale access, you must be a referred member, but once accepted, there are no fees involved. Everyone loves a sample sale, right?!

Fab Flash: "Stylist, The Interpreters of Fashion" Launch Party

Last night, Style.com hosted the book launch party for its new book Stylist, The Interpreters of Fashion at Skylight in New York. A few of the 16 stylists highlighted in the book made appearances, including W fashion editor Camilla Nickerson, Vogue creative director Grace Coddington, Elle creative director Joe Zee, and Allure creative director Paul Cavaco. Vogue editor Anna Wintour and a gaggle of designers were also there to mingle and show their support, including the L.A.M.B. designer herself, Miss Gwen Stefani, decked out in a fringed checkerboard top and tailored shorts.

New York Fashion Week Trend Alert: Going Tribal

One of the the more print inducing trends on the Spring runways was Going Tribal. An array of batik prints, nature-inspired, exotic and tropical prints will provide fabulous fashion fare. DKNY went tribal with a more subdued palette, youthful shapes, and obi belts; Oscar de la Renta knows how to deliver tribal to purveyors of luxury, and Diane von Furstenberg's "Under the Volcano" theme gave way to vivacious tribal delights. Fab Flash: Behnaz Sarafpour Takes Eco-Style a Step Further

Designer Behnaz Sarafpour is so serious about the green movement, she is planning on using eco-friendly practices at the designer level. In fact, her Spring show this Friday at New York Fashion Week will feature a capsule group made entirely with the environment in mind.

"I love fashion and never thought of it as a banal thing to do," Sarafpour said. "But I think it's important to find something that goes beyond just making beautiful clothes."

So how did she go about it? She researched fabrics and dyes that are safe for the environment. For example, she used an organic waffle-weave cotton from Japan for one coat, then had it dyed with Osage sawdust in New York.

Although her limited edition collection turned out to be more pricey than her regular one, Sarafpour would like to keep developing the concept for future collections. Hopefully she'll inspire her peers to follow suit...

On Our Radar: New York Designers on Display in London!

London's Victoria & Albert Museum is currently displaying New York fashion from greats like Zac Posen (dress pictured), Derek Lam, Behnaz Sarafpour and Proenza Schouler; and though many of us won't be able to see their designs in person, we can still see them through pics! The exhibit focuses on sportswear, menswear, avant-garde, atelier and celebrity, and ends on September 23rd.

I've been a big fan of the Go International line at Target thusfar, particularly the collections by Tara Jarmon and Paul & Joe. For its latest collection, timed to the holiday season, Behnaz Sarafpour is a fitting choice. Known for her signature lace trims and ribbon details, the rising NYC design star is now bringing her ultra-feminine touch down to a more affordable level.

Dominated by sleek black and white palettes, these classic, urban pieces would be just right for holiday parties and winter work ensembles. Though I think this collection is more hit or miss than some of the other Go International lines, there are definitely some real gems at great prices.
