Trend Alert: Fall's Moody Argyle

We've seen preppy, peppy argyle before, but it's Fall's moody argyle that Claudia Schiffer's sporting that has my full attention at the moment. With a dim color palette, this look is just a little on the darker side - and so Fall-appropriate. Try the classic pattern in deeper shades of purple, blue, forest green, and black for a more serious approach to the prep-school staple.

ELLE Decor Gears Up For the Launch of Style and Substance

It's a big month for ELLE Decor. Not only is it the magazine's 20th anniversary, but Oct. 28 marks the official launch of the new book Style and Substance: The Best of Elle Decor, written by editor-in-chief Margaret Russell (below). So on Tuesday the magazine held a special event for 600 of the design elite on the third floor of Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan. The guest list included amazing designers from interiors to art to fashion, including Bunny Williams, Michael Smith (Obama's decorator), Alexa Hampton, Jeffrey Bilhuber, and Mario Buatta. And Bergdorf's also created a special commemorative window for the event, which you can see below if you're not in the Big Apple to pass by it.

I've been collecting a giant stack of dog-eared ELLE Decor issues for the last 10 years, so I cannot wait to get my hands on this book, which condenses the best of the magazine's timeless interiors into one much more manageable volume! The book (which you can pre-order) is already number one in the interior design category on Amazon, and 240 pages overall, so I suspect it'll be worth the hype! Behind the Seams: Bergdorf Goodman Welcomes Missoni's Fall Line

Last night, when the doors of Bergdorf Goodman in NYC were closed to customers, they were opened for Margherita Missoni and her friends. Actress Joy Bryant, Bergdorf Goodman women’s fashion director, Roopal Patel, and Mickey Boardman all celebrated Missoni's Fall '08 collection together.

Margherita looked more mature than ever in a peach dress and layered tribal necklaces. Missoni's floral and zigzag confections were shown off by two models, who circled the store, allowing upper-echelon customers to touch and observe. So, observe!

Inside the World of Prescriptives Custom Blend

On Monday, I had a real treat. Prescriptives invited me to Bergdorf Goodman to try its Custom Blend service. Now, this is different from Colorprinting. Colorprinting involves finding out which tones your skin has, then choosing existing products within the appropriate family. The Custom Blend service involves working with a makeup artist to create a precise foundation, concealer, lip gloss and/or powder-specifically created to match your skin tone.

My makeup artist was Matthew Garber, who I highly recommend seeing if you're in New York. He's fun, funny and very easy to work with. We decided to do a Custom Blend foundation ($62) and concealer ($32). To find out how it went, and to see pictures of the process,

The first step is to be Colorprinted. This involves putting four different swatches of foundation-all with different undertones-on the cheek, then seeing which color family blends best. I'm a blue-red, which means I have cool rose undertones.

Matthew started making the concealer. First, he asked me whether I wanted an undereye concealer or one that would work on blemishes as well. Because I just wanted to stop looking like Uncle Fester, he recommended the addition of light-reflecting, brightening ingredients. Then he filled a test tube with the concealer base. From there, he added pigment and applied it under my eyes. Now, this is the part that made me happiest. He looked at my eyes, pursed his lips, and squinted at it. "It's not quite perfect," he said, and went back to mixing. A few moments later, he tried again. "Much better," he said. When I looked in the mirror, his attention to detail was apparent. I had no more circles! Better yet, it didn't look like I was wearing concealer.

After perfecting the concealer, Matthew went on to create the foundation. We decided to go for a light-coverage liquid with a bit of moisturizing action. First, he primed my skin with Super Line Preventor Xtreme ($48). Then, after mixing the foundation, he applied it. Again, it was very close but not exact, so he did a little tinkering with the formula. When he applied it this time, I couldn't believe it. You know how foundation often shows up like a coat over your skin? This was the exact opposite. Instead of seeing makeup, I only saw skin. It was absolutely perfect.

I went home with a large bottle of foundation, a smaller travel size, and a concealer-all of which provided equally excellent results when I tried them at home. In fact, TeamSugar saw me with it on the other day, and said, "Did you do something different? Your skin looks great." Yay!

At the risk of sounding maudlin, I can see the Custom Blend service being a life-changing thing for a lot of women. So many cosmetics companies have limited foundation shades, and many people-particularly women of color-have had to settle for foundation and concealer that doesn't match their skin tone very well. If you've had this problem, I think this would be a great solution for you. While it isn't cheap, I think it's worth it considering how personalized it is. Not every Prescriptives counter is a Custom Blend one, so look up the closest one to you. If anyone else has had a Custom Blend revelation, let me know.

Love It or Hate It? Tesoro Coral Teapot

I'm speechless when it comes to this Tesoro Coral Teapot ($600) from Bergdorf Goodman. This teapot, which has hand-applied 14-karat gold accents and white-tipped coral covering it, is part of L'Objet, a collection combining "unexpected elements and textures to create luxurious tableware and elegant home decor."

To begin, I would never buy a teapot; I just use regular ole pots to heat up de l'eau. And if I did buy a teapot, I wouldn't spend six hundred smackers on it. But if, for some reason, this Tesoro coral teapot landed in my kitchen cupboard, I still can't imagine serving my tea party attendees jasmine in it. I'm just plain baffled.

Casa Shops: Bergdorf Goodman to Release First Home Decor Catalog

WWD reports that Bergdorf Goodman will release its first home décor catalog next week to 100,000 customers. The 16-page book is filled with unique vintage finds and rare exclusives from around the world, with products ranging from small dishes priced at $75 to $4,000 sculptural pewter pieces. The book has five themes: curiosity cabinet, classic dining, casual table, boudoir, and Art Deco bar.

The release of the book is a reflection of some major changes that Bergdorf's has made to their home floor in the last three years. After opening a BG restaurant, Nicholas Manville, divisional vice president of decorative home, says they "began to rethink the rest of the space and ways to make it as productive as possible. We made a lot of moves and consolidated certain themes together, and focused on making the hallways more exhibit-driven." Not only were there physical and thematic changes, but the home floor has also had a 30% growth in sales over the last three years, which suggests that consumers are ready for BG Home in their homes.

Until now, BG would only include a single home-related item in its apparel or gift catalogs. I suspect that the 100,000 customers receiving this first issue catalog next week are those already subscribed to other Bergdorf catalogs, which I am not. Regardless, I can't wait to get my hands on one.
