The Marc by Marc Jacobs collection was all about the schoolgirl gone grunge. Loose trapeze-like dresses and combat boots melded with pleated skirts and pretty bouclé coats resulting in a mashup of feminine cool tinged with military touches. The main focus were full-skirted dresses made in floral prints, metallic finishes, plaid, velvet, and sheer mesh. Outerwear featured a standout fur collared anorak and plenty of ladylike coats. We were especially smitten with the polished textural coats, nipped in at the waist with leather belts. Vera Wang Fall 2012

Vera Wang explored the relationship between hard and soft, structure and fluidity in her Fall 2012 collection. Like many of the collections this season, Wang's clothes had a distinct architectural feel via artful prints and super-structured outerwear. On the flip side, dresses were sheer and made of flowy chiffon, a softness that she countered with sparkly tops resembling armor (very pretty armor that we might want to wear out at night). Big coats were a win - many of them had oversized hoods and big fur collars that made them look like positively yummy options for Winter. With Vera's innate talent for constructing insanely beautiful dresses, we paid special attention to her eveningwear options, particularly one pale blue dress of layered chiffon and organza that, with a slip underneath, might just appeal to the celebs in the front row, including Viola Davis, Maria Sharapova, and Leighton Meester.

Trends: Architectural prints, sculptural silhouettes, sheerness.
Colors: Gray, black, camel, a gorgeous dutch blue and bright orange for contrast.
Key Piece: The coats with big hoods and oversized collars; a dutch blue organza dress.
Accessories: Big wedge booties and boots looked futuristic but were also a bit heavy.
Who Would Wear It: With Leighton Meester, Maria Sharapova, and Viola Davis in the front row, you can assume a diverse group of women might be attracted to Wang's artful sensibility here, but overall it's geared to women who don't want the classics.

Tory Burch Fall 2012

Tory Burch's Fall collection was inspired by "the idea of a prim girl who's under the spell of the wrong kind of guy." The results? An array of prim and polished looks injected with just the right amount of librarian girl sexiness. Sultry lace dresses showcased embellished collars, peplum tops were adorned with sequins, and pencil skirts were decorated with frilly hemlines. Burch also gave new life to tweed and tartan; a pair of knockout leather tweed-printed pants were the highlight of the show. Meanwhile, a cozy selection of bouclé jackets and angora sweaters provided texture and warmth. For accessories, the designer featured patent spectator shoes and a range of heavily embellished chain bags and floral clutches. More details below.

Colors: Blue, red, forest green, purple, gold, beige.
Key Piece: We loved the modern take on the tweed-print leather separates.

Rachel Roy Fall 2012

True to form, Rachel Roy delivered a delightfully wearable collection of bold-hued knits and dresses, homing in on the perfect balance of easy separates and keen architectural detail for Fall '12. Roy excels in crafting pieces women want to wear - it's that mix of the understated, like slouchy knits in brilliant colors, and the sharpness of a well-executed cut - and the backs of Roy's evening gowns are done with perfect precision. This season, she's particularly adept at translating megawatt hues onto wearable pieces - even furs and sweaters get the pop-of-color treatment to pair against the line's sleek trousers or simple shifts. If it's not rich, saturated color, then Roy steals our interest with her texture story in leather, tweedy knits, and open cable knit. Altogether the looks read in perfect balance - she delivers a hint of downtown edge (minus the intimidation) and marries it effortlessly with the uptown sophisticate.
