For Bottega Veneta's Fall 2012 collection, Tomas Maier showed us his take on wearable luxury, highlighting sleek suiting, sharp coats, and an impressive batch of evening wear. “The look is covered up and the materials are virtually impenetrable, yet the effect is powerfully physical,” said Maier. Day wear focused on tailored coats, cropped trousers, and skirt suits featuring brooch-adorned jackets, refined blazers, and knee-length pencil skirts dipped in purple, black, and navy hues. Meanwhile, '40s-inspired shift dresses were injected with a modern touch via sliced leather insets and statement prints. The latter was featured on a striking cap-sleeve dress with a bold corset belt. Evening wear honed in on Maier's love for texture; velvet and feathered cocktail dresses and peplum gowns emoted the perfect sense of opulence, with just the right amount of mystique. For his die-hard bag ladies, Maier provided a range of reptilian-print satchels and leather clutches featuring the brand's iconic woven intrecciato technique. More details from the collection below.

Bottega Veneta's Tomas Maier debuted a Spring 2012 collection that focused heavily on color and texture - and we're not complaining. Goddess gowns of billowy chiffon appeared in jeweled hues of purple, ruby, and rust, and cocktail dresses had geometric embellishment that gave them a slightly tribal feel. There were draping and pleating done in ways to give the clothes volume without sacrificing the most important element of warm-weather dressing: breeziness. Finally, this is Bottega, so we expect a fine showing of accessories. For next season, expect a continuation of exotic skins like lizard, ostrich, and crocodile, but with treatments and embellishments to take them to the next standard of luxury.

Bottega Veneta began with Karolina Kurkova in a shaggy mustard coat and bouffant 'do - a seemingly direct ode to the '60s lady - before morphing into something much more modern and original. Designer Tomas Maier made ingenious use of fabrics and textures to tweak classic silhouettes like prim skirtsuits and make them feel young again. Sheer panels trimmed coats, lace was cut into strips and draped along the front of dresses, and an ombré effect on rough-edged skirts looked as though an artist had spray-painted it black. This was no '60s housewife. The collection was ultra cool, but completely sophisticated.

Trends: Draping, lace, '60s, colorblocking, boucé.
Colors: Mustard, orange, purple, slate green, black, black ombré, white.
Key Looks: The lace-detailed cocktail dresses were incredible.
Accessories: White tights, delicate t-strap shoes, an amazing python bag.
